Hello,
I just gave birth 4 weeks ago to our third child. She is beautiful and amazing. Her two older brothers (2 & 3) had colds and I believe passed this on to our new born. She has a runny nose and a croupy cough (it sounds like a seal). I'm worried because she is so young that she won't be able to fight this off. Does anyone have experience with a newborn having this kind of cough? I tried to place her in a steamy room last night and the humidifier by her last night, but it sounds worse. We're going to see our Dr. later this afternoon but wanted to hear from other moms. Thanks so much!
Sam

I would get some eucalyptus essential oil and put a few drops in some light oil (I use almond oil) and rub it on her chest. It is soothing, safe, and works wonders. Also, if you use homeopathy, I highly recommend homeopathic spongia tosta. I would dissovle 2 tablets in a tiny, tiny bit of water and rub it on her tongue. Actually, *I* would probably rub it directly on her tongue, letting her saliva dissolve it. It dissolves like sugar very quickly when wet. I hope she's okay! Don't give her cough syrup, please, please. Coughing is her body's way of clearing her throat so she can breathe. My friend lost her baby after giving him cough syrup when he had croup. He died in the night. And, he was over a year old. Her ped recommended the syrup.

If she gets bad don't hesitate to take her to the emergency room! I'm not a medical alarmist (hardly ever take my kids to the doctor even), but croup can be very serious in young babies. They have very small airways, and when those constrict, there isn't much room left (if any) for them to breathe. My daughter had it at around 7 or 8 months I think and we had to take her to the ER for a breathing treatment that turned it right around.

Both my kids got croup twice a year at least. My five year old just outgrew it but my two year old just had it after Xmas. We have tried everything. What worked best for us was sitting in the steamy bathroom for 5-8 minutes with her just in a diaper and then right away bundling her up and going outside for 5 minutes. For whatever reason that always opened their lungs up and the barky cough stopped. Keep the cool mist humidifier going and also throw a pillow under her mattress to keep her head elevated a bit. The barky cough usually lasts a couple days. Good luck leb us know what your dr says

Didn't have time to read all the responses so hope I'm not repeating.

My son had croup when he was almost 7 weeks old. He got it from someone who just had a common cold but to a baby it was much worse.

He ended up having to be hospitalized for 24 hours and have a steroid administered through IV cause croup is a swelling in the throat.

Watch her closely cause she is quite young to catch this. If her stomach starts retracting and you think she's struggling for air, don't hesitate to go to the er.

Glad to hear you're taking her to the doc today cause it's one of those things that need to be watch closely.

I'll say prayers for her:)

Cold night air works best on croup. My daughter had this often, even though technically they say that babies this young don't get croup! It's good you are going to the doctor. Her breathing could be compromised by pneumonia or RSV, both very serious in newborns! Nothing with a baby this young should be taken lightly! Will say a prayer for you that it is nothing more serious than a little cold! Good luck! Let us know what happened!

Nurse, nurse, nurse! You're immunities will pass to her. That's the best thing you can do. Poor thing.

Glad you are getting into the Dr. I agree humidifier too. The "good" think is the cough w/ croup is not that bad - watch for stridor... Also, even though it's a wives tale... I would try some vicks (baby vicks) on the bottoms of the feet under her PJs at night. Good lucK!
