Hi there,
My son is going to be 3 next month and we have been going thru the potty training issue where he'll pee in the potty was beginning to old his BM because of fear of going on the potty. Well, his last 2 BMs have been on the potty but after 3 days of holding it, although now I'm thinking it was because he's constipated. Yesterday his day care called me because he was sitting for 15 minutes, pushing and then was bleeding. Any recommendations??

What can I do next?

If he's constipated then probiotics may help as well as getting more magnesium into his diet. More fresh fruits and veggies may help - prune juice is a staple for loosening the stools. Temporarily avoiding dairy might benefit the situation also.

Hi T.,

I am a homeopath and yes, there are a lot of wonderful remedies for fear of BM's. One is Natrum Muriaticum, but is that is real problem or does he need more fiber or oil, less sugar, there are many reasons for being constipated...too much dairy.

I remember my nephew having this problem. The doctor put him on a high fiber diet, took away most sweets, soda, candy, etc... Lots of fresh fruits and veggies. Also he had to be put on the potty four times a day and made to sit there for a bit to help him to learn to control his movements. But honestly, if he is bleeding I would take him to a doctor. Could be something serious going on with him.

I would buy a fiber supplement from the whole food store. As well as concider some probiotics. There are a lot of natural things out there to help. Just ask at the whole food store.

hi T.,my name is T., and i am a mom of a 2 1/2 year old. i know of some natual things like apples, and or prune juice to get him to have a bm; but if hes bleeding, i would give him a (liquid)glyserin suppository, and if that doesnt work, theni would take him to the dr, or maybe even the hospital, cause, sounds like hes held it in soo much, he could be impacted now. when i was a kid, (due to being potty trained to early), i used to hold it in sometimes too, and my mom would have to give me an enema.(i dont know if enemas or ok for three year olds though). might want to talk to the pediatrician on that. i hope i have helped. good luck!

Traci,
Glad to hear you are leaning toward a holistic approach for your family. I am responding as the wife of a holistic chiropractor/acupuncturist/homeopath. I asked my husband what he thought and his advice was to check your son's abdomen for any tenderness. If he has any you should seek professional advice soon. Look for a holistic practioner with experience to access your son. Even without tenderness since it is not going away it could be a virus, bacteria, fungas or parasite and it needs to be taken care of so it doesn't affect his overall health. We are raising 2 wonderful children using only holistic/natural. Our kids are 12 and 15 and thriving. I am 44 and was raised in a holistic/natural environment as well. Your belief that a positive outlook makes all the difference is exactly right. More and more health and longevity is linked to our outlook. All the best.

I have a 3 year old boy with similar problem. I haven't had any trouble after he started taking the fiber gummies by Pedia-Lax. Two a day with his multi vitamin. I think I bought them at CVS and Target. They are for children 2-11 years.

Aww, poor little guy. I feel for your son (and you). That sounds awful. Make sure he is eating LOTS of fresh fruits and veggies, and seriously limit sweets and "junk." Reward him for pooping on the potty.

Sounds like he is having constipation problems. Give him lots of WATER, fruits and vegetables, whole grain foods. Limit or eliminate white bread and things like saltine/ritz crackers, etc. It expands in the stomach and is very sticky in the intestines.

I would just leave the whole potty training thing alone for awhile until you get his constipation under control. Giving him laxatives on a regular basis will just make things worse in the long run because you are actually relaxing the muscles he needs to push so you start messing with his natural abilities to eliminate.

You can explain to him that eating certain foods make it harder for him to do a poop, he is old enough to understand and may help him transitioning to new foods. Keep trying different things. There are so many different kinds of fruits and vegetables and can be made so many different ways.

Also, fruit juice pops made from juiced fruits not anything store bought with lots of sugars/additives, etc. My kids love the fruit pops and its a good way to get more fruit/liquid in him.

Good luck and just learn as much as you can from searching the internet and the library. There is alot of effect the foods we eat have on our body just a matter of how much we are willing to re-learn to avoid those problems.

My son constantly has problems with constipation :-( It is horrible. The doc has had me try everything his is on Miralax and it works, but I still have to give him Glycercin suppositories sometimes. Try giving him grapes, and applejuice. That seems to work for my little guy. Good luck!

Hi,
My daughter had the same issue, only she can go up to 10 days without a bm...I have found, and her DR. suggested small amounts of Mirslax, or a childrens laxative every other day or so.All this really does is help her not be able to hold it in. When he feels like he has to go he can sit on the potty and he wont havee to push quiet as hard. It has worked for my daughter very well.

miralax!!!
and add fiber to his diet!
plenty of FRUITS and VEGGIES and not so much
crackers, cheese, chips, pretzels- all that kind of snack food is a no-no until he gets regular again...

now he might be even MORE scared to use the potty.
get some clear desitin diaper cream, put it on his tushie and tell him it's MAGIC. that if he hurts you have MAGIC CREAM for him. make it fun and silly and CALM so he knows it's SAFE to go on the potty.

I'm sure you don't like the miralax idea since you are holistic, but you really might want to consider it for immediate relief. Being that constipated and hurting is only going to increase the fear of going and make him hold it more. After a day or two on miralax he won't have a choice and it will be easy. After that, you can focus on adding the natural fiber. When my son was that bad, fiber foods just didn't do it, he was too far gone at that point. I have had to use miralax on him for about 3 days his whole life. It got him past the bad part and I worked on giving him the right food ever since and haven't had the problem again. I think him getting bloody is hurting him more physically than anything else could right now! You can also add benefiber to his drink on days where he just won't eat what you need him to. Good luck!
