2 1/2 Year Old Pooping in Pants

My DD has been daytime potty trained for a couple of months now. Last Thursday however she pooped in her pants, not a lot, just a little "nugget". I took straight to the bathroom for her to finish, but she just sat there and told me she would do it later. She has been told that is she wanted to go to school or the Dojang (martial arts) she has to be potty trained. That was a great motivation for her because that is what she wants. What is getting me is that she has done it every day since, and always just a little bit and will not go any more. She has however has had a full BM twice in that time also. So i don't think that she is constipated, but maybe. I'm wonder how others have resolved this issue.
Thanks

So What Happened?

Well she has stopped messing in her pants for now. She has been going poop in the toilet again but not the amount that is normal for her, so we have an appointment Friday to make sure there isn't a medical reason for what has happened. I just want to make sure if there is we catch it early before it could get really bad. Thanks for all your support, it is greatly appreciated.

Hi A.,
She is still very young and this too shall pass.
I would suggest continue taking her or reminding her to go to the bathroom at regular times - am, noon, after nap, pm ect.
Do not say anything! she really doesn't have the capacity to look ahead long term or needs to have the 'pressure' of attending some class or school in 3 years.
Give it time. If you wait 6 months and she's still having
difficulties talk to your pediatrition. In my experience it only takes a short amount of time (3 -4 weeks tops)
It just seems like a long time while your cleaning messing underware:)
Good luck

When a child becomes potty trained it does not change the type of bm they will have. If she was always having "nuggets" then that would continue. If she had "regular bm's and not the nuggets then something is up. When my nephew was potty trained he would hold it so he could go and play instead of taking the time to go have his bm. He got so backed up that his colon stretched out and he got even more backed up. When this happens they will sometimes have a looser stool around the big blockage once in a while as well. It ends up being a bad cycle as when they do try to go it hurts so bad that it makes them not want to go even more. Because everything was now stretched out that he started losing control and would have "nuggets" in his pants and on the floor etc and not even know it. My sister brought him to the clinic and they xrayed his stomach and he was packed full. He had to be on powerful stool softners for a whole year so things would shrink back down and it was impossible to hold the very soft stool. Not to be gross, but you will notice it smells alot more too than a bm that was not held as long. Good luck!

If there is not a medical reason for this change in potty training, I would recommend a little motivation. My son would potty in the potty chair for about six months before he pooped in it. At the time, he was very much into Thomas the Train. Therefore, we reached for a little motivation. We bought several trains for him and left them in the package. We showed him the trains and explained that for each time he pooped in the potty he would get to open and keep a new train. However, if he pooped in his pants, the trains went up on the shelf above the toilet until the next time he pooped in the potty. They were kept there as a reminder of what he would get back if he pooped in the potty. Within two weeks, he was completely potty trained and we made a Thomas the train cake in celebration of his accomplishment. It worked for us!! Good luck!

You are doing great! 2 1/2 is on the early end for potty training to be completely done. Don't stress about it. I know it is not fun to clean up poopy pants, but she will seem totally trained, and regress, and then out of nowhere will just start doing it in the potty all the time again. Be patient and try not to make a big deal out of the poop. Good luck!

My daughter did this too! My mom told me this, "Have you ever seen anyone walking down the aisle to get married who is still pooping their pants?" In essence, she was telling me she will learn to go poo in the toilet. She did learn and I wish I had not been so h*** o* her. Don't punish your daughter for having an accident--then she will hold it and you will have an entirely new set of problems. Reward her for going in the potty and throw in a little praise, too. Say, big girl, good girl, etc. She will respond to that and the mess in the pants will stop. It might take a while, but it will stop. Good luck!
