19 Month Old Seems to Have a Virus That Won't Go away...fever Won't Stay Down

My son has had a fever since Wednesday. We went to the Dr yesterday she saw white spots on his tonsils but quick strep came back negative. the Dr says it's not foot hand an mouth and proabably a virus and to watch him for a couple days.

Here's the history...
Wednesday evening - Low grade fever
Thursday - 101 - 102 most of the day...around 4 or 5 started moving to 103 - 104. Middle of the night thursday in the upwards of 104....with ibpureufin....did the bath thing at midnight and gave him another ibpreufin dose.
Friday - 103ish most of the day...at about 9 he woke up fussing and his sheets were wet and his fever was down.....thought it broke...but at 6:30 this morning when he woke up it was back to 101 - 102

Today- Woke with 101 - 102...around noon it went up to 103-104....then it went down to 98 and we thought it broke again...at 5:00 when he woke up again, it wa 103-104.....

I can't figure this thing out....we've been using tylonol and ibpreufin...neither seems to work very well.

Has anyone experienced a virus like this recently? How long has it been lasting....any ideas on what else it could be if not an ear infection...strep? Doc says virus, but I'm starting to wonder.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded. The rapid strep was sent in for the 24-48 hour test and came back as well. Saturday late night his fever broke again and then at about 2:30 went up to 101..which wasn't too bad for how he was. Sunday he woke up with 99 temp and it stayed down all day. Today he's just fine. We're watching him for the Roseola rash, but so far none. Not sure what it was, but whatever the virus this one was nasty. Hope not many others have to deal with this one.

My son was constantly getting ear infections and sinus infections for a year straight, with high fevers. We finally figured out he was allergic to dairy...worth a thought for your lil guy.

My oldest son went through that at about the same age. He had a fever on and off for a week and a half. He was teething. I took him in to the doctor's twice and called the nurse help line three times and they all said it was a virus except the last nurse who suggested that he might be teething. Two days later the fever broke four teeth cut through (his eye teeth). This was all accompined by diherea. Good luck.

Moat doctors worry about an adult with a temp of over 103. Once a body reaches 104 and higher it is dangerous and needs to be brought down or your body will cook itself. I would take him into the doctor or ER and tell them what's going on. DO NOT wait until your child temp is 106 before trying meds (as mentioned below), whatever doctor tells any mom to wait that long needs to go back to school or have his license pulled. Why would an adult be in trouble at 104 but not a child who is mcu smaller? Good luck, hope he feels better soon.

That is much MUCH too long to have a fever, ESPECIALLY over 101!!! You need to take your son to the doctor, have him admitted and tell them you don't want him home until they figure out what's wrong with him!!! The high temperature will start to cause problems with his organs, and brain! Tell them to do the overnight strep culture, since the quick one is not always accurate.

If your doctor isn't "proactive" enough for you to find out what is wrong with your son, find a new one! It sounds to me like he is just perplexed as to what is wrong with your son, and is using the "virus" as a way out of trying to figure it out!

Something I didn't see in any of the other responces is this....

If a child is running a high fever of 102 or higher and has been given both ibpro. and tyln. for up to 5(five) days should be taken into their doctor or hospital. Giving a child that amount of meds for up to five days can start to shut down the liver.

I am not saying you did this but just as a heads up for all moms and dads.

I didn't know this until both my girls were going through it just two months ago. And I knew with them getting all the meds they were gettin couldn't be good for a long time, both girls were one day off of going into the hospital. Lucky, the morning they would have been going in, they both broke their fevers and it was done. But keep in mind if the fever is around 101*, let it run for awhile, they don't take a fever as being high until 102* most kids naturaly run around 99*-100* letting the fever run for awhile will help their bodies in the fight against the virus.

Good luck to all, and hope for the best this Spring!

Our whole neighborhood just went through this. One of my friends brought her 7 month old in with the same fever and white bumps. The fever was always 102+. The doctor did have a name for it and basically said it was a summer virus. The fever can last about 5 days and the flu like feeling can last 7-10. He said just to alternate Tylenol and Motrin to keep the fever down. That kept it around 100. Everybody on our street is way better now.
Hope everybody is better soon!

We just went threw that with are 10 month old it was a week and 1/2 before the fever went away. I kept being him in and they keep checking all they told me was it was a virus and that we will have to wait it out. He white blood count was high and he was fussy and high temp. We would give him tylonol and ibpreufin too but as soon as the meds were out of his system the fever came back. never found out what it was just got better a little ever day.

A doctor should always trust a parents' instinct (and if not, I would look for another Dr.). To go that many days with a fever that gets that high and for the very young age of your son, the Dr. should see him again...soon. I was always told by my children's Family Practice Dr. that under the age of two, a fever over 103, they wanted to see the child right away (not sure if it's to the point of going to the ER, but if your Dr. won't see your child because he assumes it's only a virus, I would go to the ER). And if you are being over protective, it's better to be too concerned than not concerned enough; that's my philisophy. I hope your little one gets better soon. FYI...regarding the rapid/quick strep test: sometimes, it takes over 24 hours before you see positive results. They should have told you that they were sending the culture to the lab and would wait 24-48 hrs. In my experience, little while bumps has always led to strep. Between my three children and myself, strep has almost become a family member being we have had it so often. And the only sign of strep my kids ever showed was a small, persistent cough--no ear pain, no sore throat, no fever, no change in appetite, etc. When our family Dr. has not been available, I have had to demand a rapid strep test from the on-call Dr. Best of luck!

Fevers are very scary. My daughter is 16 months and we've had our share. When she gets them they have been high and linger longer than I'm comfortable with. Her first fever I treated with medication which would lower the temp then spike again. Subsequent fevers I have not medicated and they have not lasted as long. Fevers are the bodies mechanism for fighting infection and unless the temp is extremely high (our doc said 106) we were adviced not give medicine but keep her well hydrated and let her immune system do teh battle. Does your child seem reasonable happy (smile, laugh) or is he lathargic and spaced out. Your child's disposition is a better indication than fever how sick they really are.

My daughter's both had a fever like that, up and down, no other symptoms. It turned out to be walking pneumonia(which stemmed from a virus!). Ask you pediatrician to do a chest xray. I put my little girls through blood work and urine samples before they figured it out! They were then put on a very strong antibiotic, and were all better within a few days.

5 days is a LONG time for anybody to have a fever. I would take him back in.

I have a 27 month old and I would take her in again. She has never had a fever for more than a couple of days. Whatever he has doesn't seem to be going away on it's own.

Fevers can be very serious indicator that something bigger is going on. One of my nieces had a low fever and no other symptoms and it ended up being menigitis. I am not trying to scare you but just saying take it seriously.

Good luck!

My son, who is 20 months old, had the same thing about two weeks ago, along with two other boys his age at daycare. I was to urgent care twice and the regular pediatrician once and they all said it was just a virus. It was a very rough week needless to say. On day number 8 he just woke up fine and was his regular self again. I would be more concerned about his general mood and worry less about his fever. Sometimes I have to remind myself a fever is the body's healthy way of fighting infection. I would say if it hasn't gone away by Thursday take him in again.

My daughter had Roseola which has a high, spikey fever for 3 days followed by a rash on the body. http://www.kidshealth.org/parent/infections/bacterial_vir...

This could be what your son has. You would probably see the rash on day 4 and the fever will start to break with the rash.
