My 11 month old daughter is really chewing up her crib. She started teething at a young age (4 months). She currently has 5 teeth and is cutting 3 more. She just started chewing on the railings of her crib. It's really bad. Any suggestions on how to protect the crib? It's one of those lifetime cribs that turns into a bed. We're afraid we won't be able to use it if it's ruined with teeth marks. She seems to be okay, so we're not concerned about her, although if anyone knows something different about the effects of crib chewing, please share.

We had the same issue with my daughter around 9 months or so. Our front crib rail is too wide for any of the plastic rails and the sides are curved. We ended up securing towels on the side rails. She's 13.5 months now and doesn't seem too interested anymore.
I have the same type of "lifetime" crib. I bought the hard plastic teething rails from Babys R Us, and due to the rounded shape of the rails, they don't stay put. My DD is 17 1/2 mos. old & just takes them off. Babys R Us also has plastic, bendable adhesive rails which have worked better for us. They have a strip that adheres directly to the wood & won't ruin it. They do stay put. If your child should get them off, the adhesive is safe if she puts the rails in her mouth.
I used Gummi Rail for my crib. It is available at Babies R US. You can safely remove it with no problem after the child is done teething.
Get the clear teething guards they make for the tops. She is chewing on the side rails? That I don't know about. I hope my son doesn't figure that out! We have an early teether too- currently 8 teeth at 8 months (started at 3 1/2!)
Please give your daughter some frozen waffles, or something that is able to sooth her gums. It is never okay for a child or anyone to chew on something that isn't edible. I would be concerned about possible chips from the crib becoming lodged in her throat or any types of germs being ingested.
Our sons sounds about like your daughter. He is almost 15 months now, but when he started chewing on the rails of the crib, we took a full sized towel and wrapped it over and around the top rails and wrapped masking tape in between each rung to secure it(hope that makes sense). He chews on the towel now, but the crib is saved. See if that will help.
I'm not sure I have any great solutions for you but, I wanted to let you know that my oldest son did this too. He really chewed off the finish on both ends of the crib, he did it for a long time but, he suffered no ill effects. Unfortunatly I can't say the same for the crib. However, the marks were not that deep and a little sandpaper and some stain and varnish restored it to good as new. If you are really worried about it you could tie recieving blankets accross the ends, will look crappy for a while but he might get out of the habit sooner. good luck!

We had the same problem with my daughter and it started around 10 months when she started standing up! I started to notice white paint in her month and that got me really worried! So I went online and ordered the crib Gummi from Amazon, it cost about $13 only, easy to install,and works great! Since we put it on we haven't had that problem since! If you need to cover all 4 sides of the crib you will need to buy 3 or 4, because one only covers one side only! Hope this helps!
You can buy teething rails for the sides of the crib-unless the crib has the wider edges. Teething rails are usually plastic covers you place on the rails. I know you can get them online at Babies R US, not sure if they sell them in the store.
The plastic covers did not fit our rails so we went with the gummi ones and it works fine. My ds is now 21 months and he is starting to check on the part of the crib those are thicker so the gummie things wont work.
We have wrapped a blanket on one side and a sheet on the other. Looks ugly but who cares as long as he is not eating paint. He chews on the blankets now but my son has always had a very hard/painful teething issues.
Don't worry about the paint or how it looks, ours looks really bad too but you can always do a retouch later on. GL
My son did the same thing. I just purchased the plastic crib rails (they do not contain bpa now) . He did just end up pulling the rails off so I had to tie the rails onto the crib with small strips of faric. then he left it alone. it is still on there now and he is 20 months! good luck!
My son did this too. We got the Gummi Rails, attached them to the crib rails and they worked great. We got them at Babies R Us. We have not bothered to fix the marks on the crib (from prior to putting the gummi rails on). His is a convertible as well. He thinks it's funny to look at it now when I tell him, those marks are there because when you were a baby, you tried to eat your crib. =) Maybe one day we will sand it and re-stain, but for now it's just fine.
My son was chewing the crib also. I went and got the crib protectors (Babies-r-us) and he learned how to pull them off. My husband had to screw them to the crib. I would rather have a few small holes than tons of teeth marks! Good luck. No problems since then!
