1 Year Old Feeding Schedule?

My daughter is coming up on her first birthday, and I have to admit, I'm not sure what to feed her. She'll eat just about anything. She doesn't have teeth yet, but she chews really well. I guess I'm just nervous about taking her off of formula ( I was unable to breatfeed her, due to medical reasons) as her main staple and moving on to other foods. Any suggestions? I have been so excited to not have to buy formula anymore. What do you guys do with your kids? How do I know it will be healthy enough?

What can I do next?

My kids were late geting teeth too, but they eat well. Try:

*Baby food meat spread on bread
*Ravioli or any pasta
*Cresent rolls with mashed veggies and melted cheese
*Tuna sandwiches
*All soft veggies and fruit
*Fig nutins (my kids loved those)

Even though she is off the bottle, you can still give her formula in a cup. I did with my daughter because she was so small--GOOD calories!

You have to get the book Super Baby Food!! I found it at the library (author is Ruth Yaron) and it became my bible. She goes through everything, chapters on nutrition and age appropriate eating behavior & expectations, etc. Plus it has a food introduction schedule and how to calculate the amounts and nutritional balances of everything....and tons of recipes and helpful info. I could go on and on, check it out from the library....it is really easy to read and reference to.

well, young children really like sugar and if you keep her on natural sugars then she will be less addicted to them when she is older. Also if you have her try a new food every day her food range will be large and you can find out if she is allergic earlier and plan meals away from those foods.

Hi G.,

When our baby turned 1yrs. he only had a couple of his front teeth so when I made dinner I used a food grinder. He loved to eat meat. Chicken, ham, steak. Meat is a good source of protien when they are that young. Our baby was very medical needy so we had to be careful as to what to feed him. But we would try one new food every week just to make sure he didnt'get an alergic reaction to it. He was also on formula when he was 17 months. But he could not have regular milk. It was a special order formula. I still have that grinder, I would just have to find it as I packed it away. But if you would like to try it out let me know and I will look for it for you.

I would try giving her some pureed' vegetables. It is a good time to introduce children to vegetables at an early age so they used to them and learn to like them. My children and grandson love them.

G., Does your daughter show interest in table foods? At this age she is able to eat pretty much anything you are, as long as it is mashed up enough. Don't worry, it will look gross...but the taste will still be there! :-) She would probably enjoy eating mashed potatoes, steamed carrots, applesauce...etc. Of course, make sure you introduce only one to two foods at a time to rule out any allergies. My 3 kids all ate what we had for dinner by 8 months, with or without teeth! We saved money not having to buy too much canned baby food. Of course, you can't beat the convenience factor of the packaged foods for when you're out and about. Good luck and happy eating! :-)

Hi G.! This is such a good time to get her hooked on healthy foods! My daughter is 14 months now and she is crazy about avocados, boiled or baked sweet potatoes, cooked carrots, soft meats (meat from homemade soup is great), regular potatoes, lentils, cooked apples, cut up bananas, soft pears. Go wild in the produce dept.! All of this stuff takes minimal preparation and you will have such a healthy girl! We give our little girl goat's milk because the fat globules(sp?) are smaller than that of cow's and easier to digest. Our son drinks organic cow's milk cuz he has it in his head that goats milk is gross. I think all milk is disgusting so I understand his thinking:)
Another lady mentioned the book by Yaron. I think I read that one. Good stuff in there! I just get bored reading recipes so I make up my own. Don't be afraid to flavor the food with cinnamon, basil, a little sea salt, etc... babies like flavor! Have fun!

I buy applesauce in the big jars and mix with cereal. He really likes firm tofu cut in cubes if you're not ready for meat- it has a lot of protein. The cereal puffs that dissolve unlike cheerios are good if your nervous about the no teeth chewing.
We have a mesh thing with a handle that you can put grapes, oranges (not bananas too messy!) so you don't have to worry about choking and she gan gum it.

Hi G.,

I would start with the table foods she already eats, and just slowly introduce new foods. We always had great luck with pasta, macoroni and cheese, chicken nuggets, and of course french fries! :) Keep offering the foods even though your daughter may not take to them the first time. As for the formula, talk to your doctor and see what they say. My 14 month old still has 2 bottles of formula during the day, and 1 at bedtime. Just because the books say you should be done with formula at 14 months doesn't mean absolutely no more after that! We are slowly weaning him from his bottles, but are taking our time due to his milk allergies. If your daughter is doing milk already, I'd say slowly drop 1 bottle a week (or so) and substitute with a tippy of milk. Good luck, it can be so hard finding just the right foods you feel safe with. You'd be amazed at what they can eat without many teeth too!

If your daughter still does not have teeth, you can puree just about anything or chop it up real fine. Suprisingly even without teeth, babies still can gum/chew things really well. I would just offer her whatever you are having for dinner and make sure you puree or chop it up. Soft foods are probally better for the time being. Veggies, yogurt, cottage cheese, chunks of cheese, applesauce, avacoado are some good things to offer.
