Yeast/Fungal Infection in 20 Mo Old

My daughter has been on Nystatin (applying 3x daily) for a yeast infection (caused by an antibiotic she was on) for almost two weeks now. Unfortunately, she still has some redness and bumps. I have tried letting her go without a diaper, but we have had more accidents on my hard wood floors than I care to count! I'm thinking I'm going to need a different medicine and will probably end up back at the doctor, but in the meantime any ideas what I can do for it??

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great advice, mamas! I have been doing no juice (just water) and plain yogurt with just cinnamon with her breakfast and the rash looks soo much better...almost gone! Thanks!

Hi J.:

My best idea/suggestion is to consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner to find out the true origin of the yeast infection and receive wellness options that can address it completely and safely with no negative side effects. This route is the best because you receive long-term solutions, not temporary ones.

All the best,

I feel your pain! My daughter just got over one about a month ago - she was 22 months. The doctor gave us three refills and we used ALL of the Nystatin. It took just over 2 weeks to completely go away. Unfortunately, I think what helped her the most was that I had her naked about 75% of the day.

As soon as she woke up, we wiped her down and had her naked through lunch. Diaper on for nap, diaper off after. We gave her a bath every night (some nights no soap) and let her be naked for about half an hour after her bath to get completely dry before putting a diaper on for bed.

Also, avoid sugar as much as possible and give her yogurt EVERY DAY! I gave my daughter plain yogurt with probiotics. It's a little tangy, but I mixed in banana and a bit of cinnamon and she was all about it! Avoid juice completely for awhile and cut down on fruit. The sugar breeds the yeast.

Good luck!

Try feeding her yogurt! It works for most yeast infections. And it's good for her!

We have had those kinds of yeast infections before and what worked for us was this: we used the medicine as perscribed and we fed yorgurt with the active cultures (it helps restore the body's system). We also went a little differently with the diaper changes. We have too much carpet in our home to go without a diaper, but we were still able to dry out the area. Make sure that you are changing the diaper often as the yeast likes the moist, darkness of that area. When we did change a diaper we dried out the area completely before putting anything else on it. Our doctor actually suggested taking a blow dryer and using it on the diaper area to make sure it was completely dry, (we used the cool setting). And within a couple of days we noticed a huge difference. Good luck.

Put her in a shallow warm bath (just enough to cover her bottom area) and add some raw, unpasturized Apple Cider Vinegar with the "mother." I recommend Bragg brand. This will not only soothe the area but it will help get rid of the yeast.

Don't use regular vinegar or regular store-bought apple cider vinegar. It will just make it irritated.

Will she sleep on a protective liner like a pee pee pad? Of course change her more often and even use a cool blow dryer on her area between changes and after baths. I use Monistat 7 on my daughter just on the outside. it does give relief, but burns for about 2 seconds. More water to drink or very dilute juice, yougarts or pro-biotics sprinkled into her food

there is a medicine that is in powder form that you put in the bathtub - Domioboro is how you pronounce it but I'm not sure of the true spelling. Its prescription and it works wonders. You can also try feeding your daughter probiotic yogurt to get her intestinal track back in order.

If it is just on her skin in the diaper area (not on her privates) try lotrimin...its an anti-fungal.. Thats wha tmy dr recommended for my daughter and it worked. It did take a long time to clear up though. Its just b/c of where it is. ASk the dr about the lotrimin but its what worked for us. Good luck

take her off juice and give her a vinegar bath. leave her off juice. something about the sugar in juice fuels them. mine had one for 1 1/2 yrs nystasin didnt work and he had 3 round of it oral and topical. I took him off juice and he hasnt had one since. He was so bad his (pardon my french) nuts were bleeding on a regular basis. and also arbonne diaper rash ointment helps about 70% of it but wont clear it completely. I have also tried every diaper rash med on the market. if the nystasin isnt working monistat also will not help. or it will help for a week or 2 then it will come back. This was my experience.

I also used sensative wipes. checked him regualary and kept him in diapers. I also tried yougurt it helped to a point but until I got rid of juice i had no luck.

My daughter had this problem and she would scream if she had a pamper on and would pee. In the end it turns out she can't use any Johnson n Johnson products. Only dove for sensitive skin and aveeno lotion for babies. She's eight now and I still buy her the same products because her skin tends to get dry and itchy if she uses anything else.

My daughter was having the same problems from just having diarrhea so often. We tried nystatin, several diaper rash treatments and letting her go without a diaper. None of it helped. I have recently switched all of my house over to melaleuca products and used their melagel on my daughter for two days. Her infection is almost completely gone! Her's was so bad at times that it would bleed.

My daughter had the same issue after some antibiotics.the doctor gave her nysatin. But it didn't work so he switched her Vusion 2xs a day & it was gone in 2 days!! It's a little more expensive than the nystatin but SO worth it!
