Would You Rather Be Too Hot or Too Cold?

I grew up in a Northwestern state, where snow would usually start sticking in October, and melted in March or April. I have always HATED being cold!

When I moved, I went to TX for a little over a year, and now I am living in TN (for almost 2 years now...) The heat has taken some getting used to, but I love the climate SOOO much better!

My friends back home and I are constantly teasing each other about the temperature... During the winter, they will post something about how cold it is... So I have to reply with a picture of the sunshine where I am at, captioned with "thinking of you!" They do the same thing with me, when I mention how hot it is... (all in good fun!)

Personally, I would MUCH rather have a couple of months of extreme heat and enjoy the rest of the year (even a week of snow, as happened here the first year I moved!) than to deal with the snow for 6-8 months.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

P.S. I think a bit of my prejudice may be from moving from the valley waaay up into the mountains... After we moved, we had snow from October through May... Even a blizzard on the 4th of July one year... I DID have some fun with it... I enjoyed digging snow tunnels (in our 4-6 feet of snow...) and riding in the snow plane... but for the most part I was always stuck inside... It was too much work to put on enough layers to actually stay warm, and then I was really uncomfortable from them! (We couldn't afford decent cold-weather gear, so we would pile on layers and layers of crappy stuff. lol)

I am actually a very outdoorsy person... I just happen to greatly prefer the summer activities. I love being able to drive to the mountains and go hiking any time of the year! (Even if I do need to do it later in the day...) I love being able to go jump in the river year round, and not having to cycle through my wardrobe every couple of months. I do like that I come from a cold climate though... I get to laugh at the locals when they are all bundled up in coats, hats, and scarfs during the 'winter', while I am running around in a t-shirt. :P

Cold.
It's just easier to grab up blankets, run in place, or hopefully have a hotflash to warm me up. Being too hot doesnt have easy remedies except for getting in a cold shower which can be a pain in the rear and not convenient.
Being too hot makes me feel sick, being too cold makes me get creative to warm up :)

I am in TX and I love it here. Yes, we do have some extremes when it comes to the summer but the weather changes so fast.

I HATE being cold and could never live where I didn't see the sunshine often or all I saw was snow on the ground for months.

Years ago my hubby was offered to move back to the PA area and he told the HQ there was no way his wife would move unless she was closer to the equator! He is from PA and he loves it here.

Hmm..the older I get the more I dislike the cold. But I also don't mind keeping my house cold and keeping a fan at my desk at work if it gets too hot.

Can we just pray for spring and fall year round and we'll all be happy?? :)

I HATE being cold BUT don't consider snow 'cold'.

In the snow I'm in snow clothes... So I'm toasty, and dry, and love it.

I was raised in deserts and jungles. LOVE the heat - If And Only If - I can swim. Oceans, pools... Swimming every day is part of my definition of heaven.

So I LOVE snow (30 to -20 is what ive lived in and loved it) and. 100+ degree heat (120 is AWESOME... Your sweat evaporates before it hits your skin, so you're never sticky/sweaty)

What I HATE is our local weather. Chilly and damp. 5/6ths of the year it's 50 degrees and raining. Perpetually cold and damp.

I'm also extremely prejudiced against humidity. Ugh. I like to breathe my air, not drink it.

So for ME... The bottom line is 'dry'.

I'm with you. I HATE being cold. Being hot can be uncomfortable. Being cold HURTS.

When you're cold, you either wear more layers or turn on the heat. I hate wearing layers. I hate breathing in heated air. When you're hot, you can drink an icy margarita and go swimming or to the beach. I'll take that any day!

We moved to Florida because we (my hubby and I) cannot stand the cold. I think it is easier to cool off then to keep warm and I can’t stand wearing heavy clothes and coats. . Plus we don’t have to shovel snow or scrape ice to go anywhere.

I would rather be cold. I can always add more layers...

I don't mind the heat. I just don't like the humidity. I've been on the east coast since Nov 1996 - and the humidity SUCKS!!!!

Heat? Yeah!! It means I can go to the beach...humidity? means I take a shower and walk outside and wonder why I even bothered to take a shower...

So cold. I would LOVE to live in Alaska.

I would rather be cold. I grew up in the South where humidity was high high. I live in Kansas now where it's not so muggy but the temps have been over 100 every single day for over a month now. I would soooo rather be cold. You can snuggle under a blanket or where sweaters and coats outside.

I'm with you. I was up North until I was 30 and am no fan of the cold. Even the people I've met here who moved from up North and liked the cold seem to find that their blood turns thin very quickly here. I HATE being cold way more than being too warm. So, it's a good thing that I am where I am.

Without a doubt...cold! Which is why I moved out of arizona. However, these 100 degree temps and no rain I am not liking. I hate being hot.

I agree the winters are nice there, but when the kids are in school until 3 and the sun goes down a few hours after there is no time to enjoy it. I would much rather be able to be outside in the summer when the kids are it of school.

I would rather have the cold. If you dress for it it isn't a problem. I love being outdoors, so hanging around indoors with air conditioning would suck. I do love the heat, and spending the day at the beach, but after a couple of months I am ready for the change of season. I love hiking and biking in the fall, and winter activities like tobogganing and snowshoeing. Spring is too messy, but I do like gardening in the spring. I definitely need four seasons!

GENERALLY speaking, I'd rather have cold than hot, because you CAN always add a layer of clothes or grab a sweater/blanket.

BUT, you have to take my comment in context. I have only ever lived in the deep south. I'd take hot and dry over what we normally have, just about any day. We have heat AND high humidity. It is miserable. I suppose to some degree you do get used to it, and it doesn't add any "work" to deal with it (like lots of snow means shoveling snow, driving in icy conditions, etc), but it can be absolute misery if your a/c suddenly conks out. Knowing that you have to keep a cooler in the car just to keep groceries from melting before you get home sometimes is an annoyance I could do without. Being able to walk outside and not have my glasses fog up from the humidity/heat is another.
But.. .again.. it's all relative. Would I prefer to live in northern Canada and deal with shoveling snow and being iced in a few MONTHS out of the year? No way. But actually HAVING some colder temperatures wouldn't be so bad, ya know?

Where you have moved to (Cleveland, TN) is actually a wonderful combination of both. You get a taste of winter AND enjoyable summer...but not TOO much of either. We vacation up that way in the summers (and fall sometimes), and it is beautiful. And while it can get hot, it isn't quite the same as the oppressive heat/humidity combinations we get farther south (barrier islands of GA). Some days you can't do anything outside, except float in the pool. Just walking outside makes you begin to seep water. It's annoying to be sweaty right after a shower just because you ventured to get the newspaper out of the driveway. :(

I love cold compared to heat. Lived in MN all my life. The hottest I like it to be is mid-70's. Hotter than that and I am too sweaty which I hate. I love winter days with crisp cold and sunshine glittering off the snow. I don't think I would like weather that was cold AND wet a lot. My DH loves heat, the hotter the better. If we weren't together I would move to Grand Marais, MN and he would move to Costa Rica :)

Oh man I would much rather be too hot! In the summer, I loves me some colorado! But in the winter, I tell my husband we are buying a vacation home in Florida or Hawaii! I guess we are lucky that we have all 4 seasons here and each is pretty mild compared to other states, but I would prefer spring and summer year round!

I'm a Scandinavian Minnesotan and I would rather live in the cold. I don't like *being* cold, but that just means dressing right. I can and do run outside in -30 wind chills, but not in 100 degree heat. Hot weather makes me crabby, irritable, and totally unproductive. I love the change of seasons we have here.

I definitely prefer heat. I keep my a/c set between 80 and 85 during the summer - in south Louisiana. If it weren't for the need to control the humidity, I wouldn't run it at all. Between 80 and 85 is the highest I can keep the thermostat during the summer and not have mold and mildew grow in the house.

Cold is physically painful for me.

Oh, I'd rather be cold. I don't get cold until it starts getting into the 40s. High 70s is about the top range of where I feel comfortable outside. Anything over that and I start sweating and would rather be indoors. At least in Oklahoma we have the wind to help, albeit slightly. A breeze at 95 doesn't really do too much for you.

Windchill of -25 vs heat index of 110.
Neither is fun.
The heat involves less shoveling.
Both will cost you plenty in heating and air conditioning.
Heat doesn't freeze your pipes and ice dams can damage your house.
I grew up in Western NY (near Buffalo) and dealing with cold and snow for the better part of 6 months (Oct through March - snow can happen, sometimes in April, too) is exhausting.
Summers near Virginia Beach can be very warm, but it's usually only 2 or 3 months of very warm weather and there are breaks in the weather.
I can't live in the cold anymore, but I can't take long periods of too hot either.
I like all 4 seasons but I don't need any of them to be too extreme.

I'd rather be too cold--must be my Scandanavian side.

If you're cold, you can always put on more clothes and be fine. But, I can't really walk around naked if I am too hot, and even if I could: a) no one would want to see it, and b) I'd STILL be a sweaty beast!

I would rather be cold. It is miserable to be too hot. It is unhealthy and many people die from just being at home and they can't get cool enough.

It is running between 85 and 90 degrees inside my house with the AC running without cycling off from about 8am to midnight or later. It seldom gets below 75 even during the night time hours. The unit is on it's second summer. It is 1/2 ton larger than what our square footage needs so it should be very comfortable in this house.

I would rather take some mens tube socks and fill them with white rice, tie the end shut, and microwave them for 1 minute and sit surrounded with them to get warm in the dead of winter than be hot.

I can ALWAYS get warmer either by taking a warm bath/shower or the rice bags. I cannot always get cooler.
