Bleach works just as well as products advertised for fence cleaning, and it's A LOT cheaper. Put it in a garden sprayer mixed with water (about 50/50) and spray the fence. After you've sprayed the entire fence, go back and rinse with the garden hose. If you use a stain or water sealer afterward, it will not gray as fast.

Years ago I used a fence cleaner that sprayed on and basically bleached the fence. Then I did a spray on stain. Got both products at Lowes and had great results.

You can buy a sprayer, similar to the ones you can buy for pesticides (about $30), at Home Depot or Lowes. Fill it with stain, and spray the fence. Don't forget to check the Oops paint section for the chance that they might have what you need for alot less money!

My husband just rented a power washer and powerwashed our fence - it looks BRAND NEW!! We didn't use anything but water. We were thinking we might have to replace the whole thing (we inherited it with the house), but we thought that power washing was worth a shot. I'm telling you, it looks amazing! We did replace the "cap" that runs along the top of the fence, and you can barely tell that the cap is newer than the rest of the fence. I am absolutely thrilled with my "new" fence!

High pressure washer. It will spray the grey mildew right off.

My husband owns a fence staining and restoration company. You would be surprised how effective a good clean and stain are on aging wood. His website is www.fencepolice.com. There is information on the website about his 2-step process, as well as his contact information. He could provide you with additional details.

Well, this is repeat advice but a pressure washer works wonders. It is amazing the difference you will see. Be sure to apply a stain or sealer after so that the "new" look will last longer.
