Why Is My Milk Supply Down? Am I Pregnant?

Hey, mamas! I went on a weekend trip with the hubby recently sans baby and was pumping and dumping the whole time. When I came back, my milk supply had gone down drastically. I've been drinking the Mother's Milk tea twice a day and still no increase. Mother's Milk tea has never failed me before, but now??? I fear that I may be pregnant, not that it would be a bad thing, but my 13-month-old is not ready to go cold turkey from nursing. I've cut his feedings down to just his night feedings, but he is still trying to hang on! What's going on? If I am pregnant, will the herbal tea that I'm drinking harm the new baby?

It's probably a result of the pumping. In spite of our best intentions baby is much better at getting the milk out than the pump. You should find that if you get back to your normal routine your milk supply will improve. Consider adding fenugreek and blessed thistle supplements along with outmeal to help it along.

Also, if you by chance are pregnant you can certainly continue to nurse. Most women will notice changes in milk supply, most notably in the second trimester. Aside from that if your son still desires to nurse it is perfectly safe for you, your son, and your pregnancy to nurse in pregnancy. The only exception would be if you were having pre-term labor (and even that is questionable) or if you were severaly malnourished.

Get a test to see if you're pregnant, but like all the other ladies mentioned, your body was used to nursing, not pumping. It won't take long to get your supply back to his needs, and the tea shouldn't harm him or a new baby.

Whenever my supply went down, I drank more water, ate more protein, and while nursing, I "milked" my breast back to front to stimulate the glands more.

YOU GO GIRL FOR STILL NURSING!!! It's an awesome feeling to get past the year mark and let them ween themselves -- did it twice while working full-time and still proud:)

What reason do you think that your supply has decreased? Is your boy just trying to nurse more often? It may just be that he was nursing more often to make up for the time you were gone. Or he could be going through a growth spurt. The best way to get your supply to come back is to stop cutting out feedings, and let him nurse when he wants to. Supply and demand... it went down while you were gone, because the pump doesn't provide the stimulation that his nursing does. So when you came back, he stopped being satisfied, and wanted to nurse more. Just go with it! If you are pregnant, your supply usually doesn't go down until later in the pregnancy, not within the first few days. Also, if you are pregnant, be careful adding fenugreek. It is my understanding that it is not ok to use during pregnancy.

I agree with Courtney. Pumping always made my supply go down. The baby nursing kept it going. Even if you where pregnant, you can still nurse and still take Mother's Milk tea.
