Noah Jean (Jean is the french way to spell John and was my grandfathers middle name)

Thanks for pointing out the Noah-Norah thing. I can see that now as well. As far as spelling Jean in a feminine form, how often are middle names used? I would assume that peers would think it was spelled Gene and we would still be honoring my Grandfather and French decent.
I like Noah Jean. The Leo Alan doesn't roll off my tongue as well with the ending vowel on Leo and the beginning vowel on Alan.
I like Noah Jean. If you are concerned about Jean being pronounced incorrectly you could always hyphenate his middle name. Noah Jean-Luc, Jean-Philippe, etc. I like to think most people would know it was the French pronunciation that way, but I could be wrong.
Noah Jean (though I did read this as Norah Jean, too.) I assume Jean is pronounced the French way.

Unhappily, if you give your son the name of Jean, he will be teased because you're not in France (or Quebec) and Jean is considered a girl's name. Could you substitute John for it? (We named our older son after his great-grandpa, altering Matthias to Matthew.)

Love "Noah Jean", but second the idea of using "Noah John". My little one is named after his great-grandfather "Jan", which is "John" in Polish. Same sentiment- less torture for him!

One thought is we tested all name options...how does it sound, what are the initials, what are the mispronunciations likely to be, etc. John is so plain compared to Jean, when pronounced correctly. Is there a phonetic spelling that would get the point across but still add some cultural flair?
My niece was tortured most of her growing up years with her name. It is a beautiful one when pronounced correctly and an annoyance when not. At the end of her high school years, it dawned on her parents that if they simply added an "h" to the end of her name, people were more likely to pronounce it properly. The solution was a little late, but she uses it all the time now and loves her name with that minor adjustment.
It's just a thought. : )
I like Noah Jean, too, but when I first read it, my eyes DID see "Norah Jean". Probably because Jean is a girls' name in English, so my brain saw the closest "girls' name" to Noah, which would be Norah. I actually read your "What Happened" then realized it was "Noah"!
Leo Alan. but i am sure either name you choose will be perfect. try them both on and see how they feel/fit the child. then you will know for sure which one to go with. that is what i did with both my boys. except with first one i was 100% sure on the boy name from the start. second son not so much. :-) but they started with the same Patrick Cole or Paul Cole. we choose the first one.
I like Noah Jean. My youngest daughter has my grandfather's middle name. Her name is Lacey James. I love it. Evertbody loves her name. She is 17 now, and she loves her name. I lost a grandson, and his name was Noah Wayne.
Noah is too popular! I know at least one in each of my daughter's classes and more even younger. I like Leo! I do like Jean when combined with another name (Jean Marc, Jean Pierre, etc). I agree with yarrmatey! When combined I would always know to pronounce it correctly!
I like Noah. And middle names, IMO, are meant to use to honor family. So Noah Jean is my pick.
My father is Jean Marc. People are always mistaking his name and callling him Gene. When my brother was born, my parents wanted to name him after my father but they didn't want the confusion with the pronounciation so they named him John Marc.
I think it is awesome that you want to honor your grandfather and whatever you choose it will work out, when I saw your post, I thought of my own family.:)

I agree with you that middle names are not often used, people are not THAT annoying usually and they will figure it out, et je suis Canandienne aussi. BUT, I would wait until he pops out and see what he looks like. Best of luck, N.
