So What Happened?

First day of weaning and it was awful! She cried and cried during her nap and after 32minutes finally fell asleep. I feel so bad and hate to hear her cry. Second nap, she never let up so I got her out of her crib (no nap). Bedtime she only cried for a couple of minutes and was out like a light (maybe b/c she only had one nap but it worked).

It just depends on when you want to. I think today's society puts to much emphasis on taking children's comfort items away to soon. And really how much different is a sippy cup vs. a bottle?
My son was off bottles by 10 months and at 3 still treats his sippy's like a bottle and is attached to them. I don't understand why you take them off the bottle only to have them latch onto something else!

Most pedi's say 12 months, but I let my first child keep the night bottle much longer. He was probably closer to two when we did away with that one. However, I never let him have a bottle in bed. I'll probably do the same with my second. As far as weaning him away from his bottles, I don't have much advice because mine didn't seem to mind and it was pretty simple, so maybe your transition will be too. I just remember taking away one bottle at a time and taking my time doing it. Good luck!

i think 1 year is a good time. i tried earlier and felt like the worst mom; my daughter was so sad. i gave it back to her and the second try was easy. i COMPLETELY agree with the mom who said what's the difference btwn the bottle or a sippy cup and that we take comfort things away too soon. the water in the bottle/juice in the sippy is interesting, but since water is the ONLY THING my daughter will drink, it wouldn't have worked for us! don't obsess; it will come.

My pediatrician really wanted my kids off the bottle at age 1. It seemed like it would be a stressful transition, but actually, both of my kids weaned themselves quickly. Whether this is a necessity, I don't know. However, it made me feel more powerful over situation that we could accomplish this together. It was a small step toward controlling the situation when it comes to potty training --- much harder.

12 months is the perfect time! I had a dentist tell me years ago the best way to wean them and it really works. You give her water only in her bottle and offer juice and milk in her cup. She would rather have the good stuff. It really worked well with my kids. I have 14yr,11yr and a bonus 18month old. I also saw your other question. Baby R Us has some really cute birthday girl clothes and accessories.

Good Luck,
A.

My pediatrician recommended weaning off all bottles by age one. Otherwise, it becomes more of a habit than a necessity and habits can be hard to break.

Try using the sippy cup for one feeding per day, then two, then three, etc. until the bottle becomes a thing of the past.

Good luck!

I had my oldest off at 9 months and the second one around 12-13 months. My oldest never liked the bottle, so when I asked our pedi for advice, he said to go ahead and drop it before he changed his mind. As for the other one, once I started introducing milk, I used the sippy for milk and the bottle for the formula. He preferred the milk to the formula, so, the bottle was an easy phase out. It really wasn't that big of an issue with either of my boys. I never put anything other than formula in the bottles. Juice, water, milk, were all in sippy's. The sippy cups were a bit harder for my children at first. I took the stopper out until they figured out what was in it and how to get it out. I wish I had more advice for you! :)
