When Is Spit up Too Much

He may have GERD. You may ask his doctor about it. My daughter had it real bad before she started eating solids. She would drink her formula just fine and then spit it all up un-phased. We had to mix rice cereal in her formula so it would weigh it down in her tummy, so it wouldn't come back up. It helped a lot.

give it some time. As long as he is gaining weight and seems content and the spit up doesn't bother him, then it is more of a laundry problem then a health one.(my son's pediatrician calls him a "happy spitter")...hang in there!! My son is 10 months old and STILL spits up most of the time. If you are still concerned, just mention it to your peditrician. GOOD LUCK, and I hope for all of your's sake that he quits spitting up soon. (Whenever I go to someone's house, I have to take a bottle of stain cleaner w/ me b/c of my son, lol....)

the powder should be fine, that's what we always used with our 3. he's so young, probably just needs to get used to it. if he's growing and has plently of wet diapers, I wouldn't worry about him. spitting up is normal. he may just be overeating, too. but hey, when they're hungry, feed em and carry around that burp cloth. good luck!

my daughter was breatfed and spit up alot!! Their digestive systems are just not mature.
He may be too little for this yet, but buy lots of bibs!! They save changing the outfits so much. My daughter wore a bib constantly until about nine months. She had one to go with every outfit!!
This is just a little hint that I reminded my sister of and when it came my turn, someone had to remind me of it!!

Congrats on your little one. I know this time can be scary especially when they are spitting up so much, it seems they are not eating enough. My little boy is 4mos old and he spit up alot and had hiccups all the time, however I breastfeed him. It is very normal. When they are small, their esophagus is not mature enough. The little sphincter that keeps the food down does not close like it does for us, but it gets better after time.
I've also heard that if babies hiccuped a lot in utero than they do outside the womb too.
My little guy would spit up so much, I told the doctor about it and she recommended changing a few things in my diet. I know in your case this doesn't matter. But when I eliminated carbonated beverages and caffeine, he got much better. In fact when I add them back in, he starts to spit up and get the hiccups a lot.
I would just monitor his wet diapers. And if you are concerned, don't hesitate to just bring him into the doctors to get a weight check. Usually, this problem gets better by about 3 months.

My Daughter did the same thing (it was about at 6 weeks though) the Dr said she had Reflux and told me to put a little rice cereal in her formula to help he keep it down.
She pretty much stopped with both the projectile stuff AND the "spit up"...
My 2 cents? If you are concerned call the Ped's office let the nurse know what's going on and see what they advise. I am a First time Mom and still call them about once/month about something (my little girl's almost 3)...
They are very helpful.

You may not be aware but the health dept and the World Health Organization now recommend that powdered formula NOT be given to the youngest of babies. Unlike liquid formula (or breastmilk), powdered formula is not sterile. There have been cases of bacteria showing up in the powdered formula and causing illness. There are even documented deaths among premies fed powdered formula. There are probably other issues going on here, but I thought you might like to be made aware of this.

One of the worst things that we can do when it comes to nutrition and infants is change the formula up too much. I am a RN for 8 years and have worked in the NICU and Well Baby nursery for 3 years. I also have 2 babies of my own. So, I rec. that you give it a little more time. Sometimes, babies can tolerate the formula just fine. However, they often can get air bubbles trapped in their stomach. When these air bubbles move up, they often push the formula out with it. Try burping in more frequent intervals. Maybe, you should burp the baby every 1/3 of the bottle until empty. Now, if the baby begins spitting up to the point of lethargy and weight loss,seek your Pediatic Doc immediately! Also, in my experience, the powder formula has less perservatives than the prepared formula. Therefore, you get less colic and stomach upset with the powdered formula. On the flip side, air bubbles are more prevalent in powdered formula causing more spit ups. So, I would make the formula in advance and allow the bottles to sit for awhile, allowing the air to rise to the top and escape prior to feedings.

If you are not quite ready to switch back to liquid I would recommend you try the Dr Browns formula mixing pitcher. You can make up quite a bit of formula and it has a special rotating blade in it that does not create all the bubbles that shaking a bottle makes. It works great and is good for storing the milk in the fridge. He had GERD and spit up and projectile vomited. His pediatrician recommended using some single grain rice cereal in his bottles as well and that seemed to really help. He also said if the extra cereal constipated him to give a 4 oz bottle of water with caro syrup in it when needed to get him "moving again"! Worked like a charm. I haven't read the other posts, but are you burping him? If he's got too much air in him it will cause him to spit up and get hiccups. Also a friend of mine had problem with her little girl spitting up when she tried to burp her because she didn't need to burp. Her doctor said to wait and see if she starts fussing after she eats and then and only then burp her.

My daughter is 7 months old now. But when she was a younger baby she spit up alot to. the doctors told us as long as its not projectile and the baby is still gaining wait then its probable okay. But I know that its not okay for your clothes and furniture. I dont know how you feel about rice ceral so early but it works. the spitting up is proabale caused by the forumla not being heavy enough to stick to his stomach.

No, don't switch back and forth. Try after you feed your little one putting him/her in her swing to where she is sitting up. Do not put the swing on. Let that be his/her quiet time to allow the milk to settle. Put a t.v. show etc. on and let her just keep still for just a little bit. My pediatrician suggested I do this with my little one allowing the milk to settle for about a half an hour.

Have you talked to your pediatrician? I am NOT a professional by any means, but my son has reflux and tends to just randomly spit up if he doesn't eat in a mostly upright position and stay mostly upright for a while after he eats.

Are you burping him frequently? Maybe the hiccups are from and air bubble and when the air comes out it brings unsettled formula with it.

As always (especially with a child so young) I recommend getting in contact with your pediatrician. Some won't even charge you if it's just a quick question especially so soon after he was born.

awww, congrats on the new baby!!! I have a 4mth old and he was the king of spit-up! I breastfed and he still did it. Alot of the times it will take a little while for the baby to get used to the "new" food he is eating. I ended up having to use formula also and found that the only one that didn't make him spit-up was the Nestle Good Start w/ DHA & ARA. Hope this helps, also you might want to try to stop and burp him after every ounce for a while until he gets used to the formula. Good Luck and enjoy every minute!

Don't be afraid to call your pediatrician and ask. But I also agree with the one of the other moms, keep your baby propped up after the bottle. With my daughter, I never used the swing, I just kept her up on my shoulder. You could even enlist the help of your husband during those late night feedings, if he's willing. I would feed my daughter, then go get my husband and he would sit up with her for 30 minutes (or until he woke back up after dozing off). This helped greatly. Also, evenutually we did change to the soy formula.

Congrats!! I have a 6 week old grandson with similar problem...have you tried burping him after every ounce? And what type bottles are you using? They are using the Dr. Brown's and having good luck with those. They also have had to change formula, but are using powdered also...good luck...

IF the other formula was working better I would go back. If it was not working I would try a soy bean base formula. My son Jeff could not take milk base formula and he would projectile. Also if the sugar amount is difference in the two that would be causing a problem. No that does not mean he has diabetes if that turn out to be the problem. Jeff did fine one soybe until six months and then he started to projectile again the doctor at that time change him to another soybean base formula tell me that sugar amount was difference in the two , he did fine on it.

Hi J.! I think he probably just needs to be burped more frequently. He's probably not spitting up as much milk as you think, because its mixed with his saliva and stuff so it just looks like a lot. I'd try burping him more often, maybe switch to a different formula thats made for gas, like someone else suggested. My son is 6 months old and still gets the hiccups almost everyday, so don't worry. It's hard not to worry when you're a first time mom (I am too) but he's probably just got little air bubbles in his tummy. If the spitting up gets worse, call your pediatrician. My now 14mo was the same way. I worried so much that she was not getting enough calories, fat, etc., because of the spitting up. My pediatrician assured me that she was fine because her weight gain was normal and all other options were ruled out, ie. reflux, stomach problems, etc. So talk to your Dr.

We did change to the Enfamil Gentlease LIPIL (purple can) and started using the Dr. Brown's bottles, both helped reduce the spit up a lot. Other than that, we bought many burp cloths and kept washing them :-) Good luck and congrats on the new baby.

My son suffered from the same problem and he is on the powdered formula. He has had cereal in his bottle since before we came home from the hospital. He has bad reflux and is now on medication for it. He's 5 months old now and its definitly gotten better. His used to be projectile and it was after every feeding. I didn't think he was actually getting anything to eat because he spit up so much. But...he's a happy, healthy baby. I would check with your doctor and let him know the situation. And just know...it does get better!!! Good luck with everything and enjoy being a mother!
