My son's "go to" book in first grade was "Captain Underpants". Then, as he developed his reading skills, he LOVED Diary of a Wimpy Kid - he continued to read those on into 4th grade. He's in 5th grade now and still loves the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies.

Just FYI, I'm a huge advocate of cartoon reading - anything to get them motivated to read. My son complained that he didn't like to read until I got him the Captain Underpants books. Then, he was SOLD. My son also enjoys the Chronicle of Narnia series.

Oh...and the Spiderwick books. My son LOVED those.

Good luck!

I just asked Kiddo, which books are your favorites?

Magic Treehouse
Lego Ninjago series
Fly Guy (Ted Arnold, picture books)
Captain Underpants
Tintin (graphic novel, great stuff-- some parents may want to review content as many stories deal with drug smuggling-- I use it as a great way to actually discuss the subject )

He's just started first grade.

My kids both liked Stories from Wayside School, but I can't remember exactly what ages they were. My daughter is 3 years younger than my son, so our bedtime stories (that I read to them) were a wide variety of age groups. I think my son was in 4th or 5th grade and daughter was in 1st or 2nd when we found the Wayside stories.

They are short stories in one book, but multiple books of them. And they are funny in a clever way.

Well my boy kiddo is now 14 but he read and loved ALL of the Magic Tree House books!! I know you said they are favorites as well but I really feel Magic Tree House series gave him the fuel and passion to start reading. He also liked the Goose Bumps series, Football Genius, by Tim Green. Tim Green has a few more books out but I can't remember the names, and they are all sports books. My son also liked the Spiderwick Chronicles, but I think he might have been a bit older for that.

Enjoy!!

When my son was 8 his favorite books were the Aldo Zelnick Series (Artsy Fartsy is the first one), the Big Nate series, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. He really enjoyed reading Wonder and Hatchet. He loved reading funny books (joke books. He had one one sports jokes) and history books (He loved one on the Titanic and one on WWII...these are kids books he got from Scholastic). He is 9 now and he is LOVING the Eragon series. He's on the last book. He just finished reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series and loved those. He also loved Harry Potter.

Erica T. has some awesome answers for you. We read a lot on her list for our 1st and 3rd grade boys. Can't remember if I saw Diary of a Wimpy Kid on her list. They like those too.

It's been awhile...in addition to the other recommendations, I recall Geronimo Stilton was a fun series to read.
