What's Your Favorite Prenatal Vitamins? and What About Other Supplements?

Hi. Does anyone have a prenatal vitamin that they love/doesn't make them feel sick? And has anyone done any research on taking a flax seed oil supplement(for the omega-3 fatty acids)during pregnancy? Thanks so much!

I really like Primacare one. It made me more nauseous for a short amount of time, so my doc wrote me a prescription for another one (I can't remember the name of it though) that she said she usually recommended to those that got really sick. It made all the difference in the world and then when I started feeling better I switched back.

With my first pregnancy the doc had me on flinstone vitamins cause I was so sick :) This time I have tried a few but really like the precare premier vitamins that came in my welcome bag from the doctor. I have still been sick with this one just not as bad, and they have B6 in them that has helped with my morning sickness, a stoll softener, and extra calcium and my doc just gives me more of the samples each time I go see her. They are also not as huge which I like as well. I take them along with the expecta DHA vitamins which are real inexpensive at walmart. I also take mine 30 - 45 minutes after dinner and then 30 - 45 minutes later I eat 2 pieces of peanut butter toast. Eating that protien and having the B6 before bed has actually helped me not feel AS sick in the AM since thats when my sugar is the lowest.
I have also used the flax seed before. I just sprinkled it in my oatmeal or bleaned up a little in my smoothies. Didnt really taste any different at all to me. Good luck! :)

This has different ingredients for each stage of your pregnancy. It doesn't have a weird smell. It doesn't have a taste since they are capsules. I am also taking their Omega supplement now that I am in my 3rd trimester.

Good luck!

when i was pregnant i went to a midwife instead of an ob/gyn. i took alfalfa to prevent the swelling, and red raspberry which is suuposed to strengthen the birth canal. also, i found that the liquid prenatal were easier for me to keep down than the ones in pill form. oh, and once i got to about 36-38 weeks, i started taking a supplement called dr. christophers. hope this helps.

When I was prego I tried the vitamins the Dr. gave as free samples, but they all made me feel sick. I just got store brand prenatal vitamins from Wal-Mart, Target, or Walgrees. They are great, they don't have the nasty vitaminy taste either.

Good Luck and Congrats.

i don't know the brand, but there is one that is an AM pill and a PM pill and it is supposed to devide up the vitamins to make morning sickness less of a problem.

I am 23 weeks pregnant with my third child and I am also a pharmacist. I take the regular prenatal vitamins from Costco along with the Fish Oil capsules. I also take an additional Calcium tablet and docusate (stool softener). I know this sounds like alot but the cost is very reasonable and you get the same benefit as all the prescription brands. The main difference between over-the-counter prenatals and prescription brands is the amount of folic acid. Most OTC brands have 0.8 mg and Rx brands have 1 mg. Not a real big difference! You can also buy a folic acid tablet OTC that has 0.4 mg to make up the difference.

FYI--Folic acid is mainly important in the first trimester when the babies neural system is developing, after the first trimester it really doesn't make a big difference.

When I was in the first trimester I usually took my vitamins in the evenings when the nausea was the least.

Yes. This Standard Process Tuna Omega-3 Oil is wonderful during pregancy. I haven't taken it with my first, for I only researched it after I had my son, but I will definately take it when I get pregnant again.

As for prenatal vitimins, I can't remember what I took, it was a pink and blue capsule (prescription) and they didn't make me too sick (the Dr. should know which one this is). Taking the right amount of folic acid is VERY important.

Red rasberry leaf is great too, and marshmallow root is supposed to really boost your milk supply.

Just be careful b/c a lot of supplements can be very harmful/fatal to the baby, esp. rosemary, black licorish...

As for regular multivitamins, my Dr. told me that the Woman's One A Day, and Flinestones are two of the best!
