What's Your Comfort Food?

In light of just having been told I'm a terrible parent for having a fat kid (no offense)...

I'm thinking about comfort food.

Mine are:

Sushi & Hashbrowns!!!

Um.

Not together.

But my Hashbrowns aren't lonely little potatoes. Peppers, onions, mushrooms, bacon, sausage, poached eggs, Swiss chard, the kitchen sink... Seriously, I pile high, and then bliss out.

Brownies are reserved for breakfast when loved ones die.

& Sushi Happy Happy Whenevers.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

* My son has a severe breathing condition that requires the use of steroids. Not anabolic steroids that make you muscular with a tiny penis, but the kind that pack on weight & redistribute fat. No matter how healthy one eats or how much exercise one does. These meds saved his life. Fat or dead? Fat. Hands down.

BBQ Potato chips. I can eat a family sized bag in one sitting. All by myself. With 3 lime sodas. I haven't had them in my house for months because I'm on those steroids, too. I've managed to keep my weight gain to 10 pounds, but it looks like most of it is in my face. The funny thing is that, at 56 years old, the weight gain filled in my facial wrinkles and people keep telling me how much younger I look. One old friend who I hadn't seen in a few years emailed me later to ask me what my "secret" was.

I'm cooking for comfort tonight! (nothing personal, just a icky rainy day)

Chicken and Dumplings (an old family recipe that I've mastered, still not as good as my me maw's!!)
Turnip Greens
Homemade Mac 'N Cheese (I've discovered the BEST recipe ever, really!)
Rolls
Apple Pie with Blue Bell vanilla ice cream

The only thing missing is sliced east Texas summer tomato, but wrong time of the year.

Hmmm? It's hard to choose!

But I would go with either a BLTEAO (Bacon, lettuce, tomato, fried egg, avocado & onion) sandwich OR Eggs Benedict w/strawberry french toast on the side, YUM! OR Corn Beef and cabbage?

Stuffed grape leaves, Indian food and sushi are serious contenders though!

I find more often than not I reach for something quick and simple tho...like goat cheese drizzled with honey and a sliced baguette.

~My SS (who is now 21y/o) was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis when he was 18y/o and has been on 4 rounds of steroids so far...it is AMAZING how much weight they add, he must of put on 40lbs, no joke and most of it seems to be in his face, it is sad...but I am with you, sick or fat? There really is no choice!

I am surprised that everyone is saying sushi!! I had it once and almost puked. Sorry, I just guess I didn't grow up eating it. Anyway, yes to the red wine, mac and cheese, and really mexican food and margaritas!! Can't get enough of those!! I agree with Amanda C on the sweet stuff too- don't really go to that for comfort, but I have been mastering Monster Cookies for my husband, because that is his go to food.

A bowl of peanut butter (literally, about 1/3 a jar) covered in chocolate syrup. TAKE THAT, FAT!!! No, seriously, I have to quit eating this...for about a year I ate this every night before bed...because it was comforting...and I can't believe I don't weigh 300 pounds. It did all settle on my hips and thighs, though...so I'm trying not to indulge anymore.

Oikos makes a cafe late Greek yogurt that's to die for.

Haribo Raspberries. Who wouldn't want a raspberry flavored gumdrop covered in nonpareils?

Just discovered "Goodbye Gluten" bread...(gf because still nursing my CD child) and contrary to most gf bread, which is dry and disgusting, this stuff tastes like HEAVEN. It's like ooey gooey homemade spongy bread, and I am in love. I want to go eat a piece right now. Except that it costs six bucks a loaf...a SMALL loaf.

Speaking of comfort food, I miss so many foods right now because of above mentioned reason...when I am absolutely done nursing, I am going to indulge myself with the following...a pizza with real crust (NOT Godfather's), Godfather's breadsticks, a package of real Oreos, a PopTart, some Little Debbies, a box of Kraft mac and cheese, a box of wine, and a beer or two. These are things I haven't had in 2-3 years, depending, and I am so desperate for all of these things...and they aren't even things I really like! I'm going to make myself sick.

And as far as whoever it was goes...maybe make a little them sized pincushion?

I don't even need to be comforted to eat that stuff. :) Good days, bad days, any day.....

oh dear. so many.
i wish mine were more like yours.
but if i'm really indulgent, i want salty (bbq chips), sweet (candy orange slices or skittles) and chocolate (really really good chocolate, like green and black or ghirardellis.)
and cookies. i'm a sucker for a good cookie.
fortunately most of the time i've learned to redirect my cravings to better stuff like kale chips, a couple of pieces of good dark chocolate, or a cup of herbal tea.
but sometimes i just wallow.

i have quite a few.. roast beef &mashed potatoes is probably my all time favorite.. potato&egg sandwiches.. anything italian my mom cooks- ravioli&meatballs, lazagna, manicotti chicken parm., and over the past few years ive become very fond of my future MILs chili and the haddock that she makes in some kind of lemoney/dejon mustard coating with rice

as far as the steroids go.. i totally get it- whoever is saying things like that to you is a horrible person... this may seem uncomparable to your situation with your son but this is my experience with a similar situation.. my neighbors dog has a condition for which he needs steroids and they constantly hear comments about how fat he is.. they sent him to a doggydaycare type place when they went away for a weekend and when they went to pick him up they were scolded by the owner for "letting their dog be obese, and not doing anything about it".. my neighbor just told the woman, better obese than dead right??

Waffles/pancakes/french toast and sausages. Maple syrup, the real stuff.
Quesadillas. Burritos (traditional and otherwise).
Cereal.
Oatmeal.
Turkey melts. Grilled cheese.
Tea with honey and milk (not herbs...just tea - unless peppermint, that does the trick too)/French press with honey and milk.
Fruit. Any kind, as long as ripe.
Miso soup.

I lose my appetite when I'm sad or anxious. But almost always, I like those foods.

Oh, I also like brownies and chocolate chip cookies almost all of the time.

Salt and vinegar potato chips or pho. Fortunately, my mil is Vietnamese so I can have the latter homemade whenever I ask. It does take all day though but it is so worth the wait.

I don't really like sweets so I don't have a go to for that. I do like the tart frozen yogurt at the new shop by my house so maybe that will creep in.

Thanks for adding something fun!
