Be REALLY careful using a snake on old pipes - you can bust right through an old pipe and then you will HAVE to call a plumber!!

Good luck!!

Get a plumbing snake, from home depot. It will go into your pipes, and potentially clear clogs. Do you have a home warranty, and insurance? If it's just a clog, it will cover it. We had to get a plumber to come out and clear the pipes (it was too bad for the snake), and it only cost us $65, with the home warranty.

Is it the toilet or is it your washer? Depending on the age of the washer, I would call the washer company for advice. If it's still under warranty they should be able to send someone for repairs if needed.

If you're having pipe problems, and your husband and his friends are handy around the house with repairs, then they could get some advice from Lowe's employees that know their stuff and replace pipes themselves. My BFF's husband helps my husband all the time with things like this.

it sounds like your sewer drain needs attention - if it's an old house it could be from roots and buildup of sewage, mud and who knows what else. It sounds like you are going to need to have a plumber or Roto Rooter come out to do an inspection. Oftentimes, they will insert a camera on a wire to look at the sewer drain to try to diagnose the problem.

btw - most people have different kinds of pipes. Drain pipes are PVC and dont hold pressure. Water pipes with pressure are made from copper.

We had similar thing occur and had to snake the outside pipe (from main line clean out) roots had grown into the pipe and were blocking the flow. I think my husband rented one from Home Depot for about $30.
He got the really long one with super sharp blades.
Good luck!

You could have roots in your drain.
Or another blockage that 'might' be cleared with a snake or eel.
Do you own this home? If so, you might want to go ahead and call several plumbers and get estimates so you know what you are dealing with down the road. Most plumbers will give an estimate--ask when you call.

one of two things you need to snake your flow pipe in the roof. or you have a collapsed sewer line. Hopefully it is the first one.

How old is old? I had a house that was built in 1966 and they used "Orangeburg" pipe---which was nothing more than tar-coated cardboard. We started having back ups like you described. I had plumbers out and they would snake it and get the obstruction out, but they told me I'd have to have the line replaced because that cheap pipe was collapsing from the weight of the earth and deterioration. Paper was accumulating at the narrow places. It was the line from the house to the city sewer--and about 100 feet. We had 3 babies at the time and were broke. Bless my daddy's heart, he paid to have it done for us!!! Years later I learned that house is ready for a tear-down because the plumbing under the slab is done for!

We were having problems too. 4 slab leaks later...this heat is h*** o* house foundations which stresses the plumbing. So in short it could be a foundation issue. We had to get our foundation and plumbing fixed! Almost $12,000!!! Hope yours is something much simpler!

Are you renting? You can ask your landlord to get the plumber. also, I have had issues with my washer. I pulled diagrams online and did trouble shooting that way. Once, when it leaked all over the place it turned out to be a $3 part and the diagram told me exactly how to replace it. I've also called the used appliance repair and sales shop and had them talk me through troubleshooting my washer. Try that too.
