lunges are one of the best exercises for the hip and but area, do sqwats on a bosu ball 1 leg at a time or 2 legs at a time.

A little about me: first time mom to a little girl that is just about 11 months. married for 2+ yrs and have been with my husband for 9+ yrs.

running is a great overall exercise for butt and thighs. Also, weight training with a lot of lunges and squats is excellent. Good luck!

The eliptical is great for that area. Also, I have found that kickboxing helps as well. I know it sounds simple, but even leg lifts and floor exercises that contract the butt muscles should help.
Good luck!!

Hi S.,

I am 68 years old and had the same problem. I stumbled on a video tape by Kathy Smith called Pilates for the Lower Body. I have been doing it at home religiously for a couple of months and it works. It hurt when I started because all I was doing before that was lifting weights and walking which I continued since Pilates doesn't make you that much stronger, but this tape is only 1/2 hour long and it makes a ton of difference. Good luck!!!!!!!

Hi S.,
I know like most women we all have an area or two that just does not want to corporate with our weight loss and/or body shape goals. However, it is really important to remember that our bodies are not like laundry where we can spot treat them. (LOL) Instead continue to focus on your whole body since when we gain we tend to put on all over it just may seem we are putting on weight in one or two areas.

In the past it has been suggested to workout and/or get the heart rate up at least 3 days a week, and now that has recently changed to most days of the week since they are finding 3 days is great for maintaining where you are at, but not at helping you reach your personal goals.

Some of the exercises my members do include working on the inner/outer thigh machine or in the absence of that machine doing lunges, using a Ball, and also using the cardio step. Another inexpensive item is the weighted hula hoop, they come in 3lb & 5lb and work not only great with getting the heart rate up but they are ridged on the inside to help break up the fat so that it can be flushed from the body easier, I actually let the hula hoop ride down on my hips and butt.

If you are not doing so keep a journal of what you are eating a great free site is http://www.sparkspeople.com They actually have a Phoenix chapter where you can talk with others in your same circumstance.

You might also consider increasing your fiber intake since fat binds to fiber and since there are really only 3 ways to get rid of the fat i.e. liposuction, cut it off, or natural elimination, fiber is definitely worth trying. A good source that I have found is hemp hearts, they have a longer shelf life than flax seed, are extremely high in fiber, protein and Omega 3,6 & 9’s and they taste great.

Most important, don’t give up with what you are doing, instead try to add to it and remember our bodies are on their on time table and not ours. Should you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call ###-###-####.
Here’s to your health! D. http://www.pwfspa.com

Keep up the bike and eliptical. Walking is a great way to burn calories if you have kids. You can do step ups for your butt. Find a sturdy chair or bench. Step up one foot first, then bring the other foot up. Do this 10 times with each leg first. Do 2-3 reps of this and you will FEEL the tighter butt the next day. Squats and wall squats are also good for tightening the butt. Leg lifts, while laying on your side, will help firm the hip areas.

Hi S.,
As a Pilates instructor and health educator I have found ,in my own weight loss journey, that even though exercise is important... what you put in your mouth on a daily basis is even more important to obtain the body you desire. After reaching my own weight loss plateau I knew it was time for me to look at my diet.
After only two weeks of reducing my animal protein (dairy products, cheese, yogurts, meat, chicken, turkey) and oils I felt my trouble areas 'melt' away. I have learned that these type foods are full of FAT... and that fat does not metabolize in our body. So the way it goes in is the way it stays in your body! there are actually tests that can be performed around the waist, hip and thigh area that will reveal exactly what type of FAT you are eating.
Adding more 'whole foods', fruits, veggies, berries grains nuts, seeds and good ole' water to rid your body of unwanted toxins and FAT will help you achieve good health and body.
I recommend a simple solution to all of my clients called Juice Plus+. You can find out more info about JP+ on my website: www.juiceplus.com/+la03919
I am 42 years old and the mom of a 6yr. old boy. Because of simple dietary changes, adding JP+, and exercise I am in the best health and body I have EVER been in my life!
Good luck on your journey and feel free to contact me! L.

Pilates works like a champ! They have specific exercises that make your butt and legs look great while working on your abs at the same time. I did this in combination with elliptical and it got me in shape quickly after gaining a little weight. My favorite video is Winsor Pilates Advanced Body Sculpting. You could only do the leg and butt exercise part if that's all you need. Here's the website: www.winsorpilates.com. But you can probably it cheapest on ebay.

It's nice because you can do them at home. After I got the hang of the exercise from the video, I wrote down a list of the exercises and how many times you do them and watched a TV show or movie I liked. I did the pilates exercises and then got on the elliptical for 20 minutes 4 times per week.

Good luck! I am about to have a baby and am looking forward to getting my body back too!

Hey S.! If you are looking for a great butt and thigh work out try 8 minute butt and tighs! It is killer, it could have your butt in shape in no time. If your just looking for some exercises to do while laying on the floor watching T.V try this. Lay on your back with your feet up on a chair hip width apart. Lift your butt off up the floor and pinch your knees together. It really works your inner thighs and even your butt and lower abs. Good luck getting in shape!

I live for my butt master and thigh master. I think I paid about $60 for the pair of them online about 7 years ago. The bike will really help your thighs but you may bulk up more than you want muscle-wise with the bike. Running is, from what I have read, the best way to have slim thighs. Good luck!

Hi S. this is the one area we women have the most issues with, hips, thighs and butt.
1. Jump squats
2. Step back lunges
3. Side steps using a small band around your ankles (make sure your in a squatted position, (be careful about not placing knees too far over toes) you should have your butt extended far enough as if you were going to sit butt first, take small baby steps to the side
4. Find yourself a flight of stairs and step up one leg at a time skipping a one whole stair, once you get used this try skipping two stairs at a time. Also check what you’re eating...
Our facility does not believe in fad diets, but proper nutrition, as women over 40, we tend to collect fat in our hips, thighs and butt... GREAT right, but with the right foods and exercise you can lose it. I work with a trainer to help me personally target those areas for myself. I will be honest and tell you if you can manage it, you should find yourself a good trainer. And I don’t mean someone who is just affordable but a trainer who will let you speak to his or her clients as a referral. I hope this helps...please feel free to contact me further. Let me know how you’re doing.

If you are only interested in butt and thight - Tony Little has a butt and thigh workout that I have used (you can get it at Target or Online) and within two months of regular use (3 to 5 days a week) made a huge difference for me and I am naturally heavy there so it takes a lot of effort for me to loose there... Good Luck

Squats and Lunges!!! Add weight to yourself when you do them too. I usually use a 40lb bag of salt (for the pool) but you can always add more weight. When you squat be sure to keep you heels on the ground. You will feel your muscles on the back of your legs really working.

These should give you some almost instant results in tightening up that butt!

Good luck!

S.- That's great that you have the equipment in your home. With kids, getting and staying in shape is a balancing act. I don't know what you do for a workout now, but I would recommend doing interval training on either the treadmill or elliptical. Do it 3 days per week, every other day and on opposite days use your bowflex for resistance training(weights). I would say to use lighter weights and more reps. For your legs, try doing 3 sets of regular squats. Each set should consist of 15 reps, so don't use a weight that you start struggling with at 8 reps. Takes a little time to find out what works best for you. I would also do 3 sets of 15 reps of lunges(can be backward lunges, forward or walking). Then I would do some step ups, with no weight. You could probably use the bench from the bowflex. Developing muscle and cardio help with fat burning while lifting weights in general helps with tightening and firming.

S., I am 36 years of age with a 3 year old. Pilates is by far the best. I did it when I was preagnant and it works. I am 5'9 and 105 and have flat tummy, tone arms and great legs and but. i ow it all to the pilates. The best one is The Method Pilates - Target Specifics Plus. 4 15 minute work outs one for legs, one for butt, arms and legs. Its great for moms when you have 15 minutes. Your boys can even join in. It tones and elongates muscle, has some yoga, stars rave about pilates. You will notice in a week an improvement. And youll feel stronger and more energetic. Drink lots of water, no diet pills. Eat salads with chicken. Green tea iced or hot. I helped a friend lose 25 pounds and now is a 2 because she chnaged her habits. Also take you sons outside and race at a full run as fast as you can sprints and that works to. Good luck god bless.

S. I am so passionate about this BABY #3 was a surprise for us.. so I have been on it after what happened the first two times. I am happy to report baby is 7 months and I will be competing in a Ms. Fitness physique show first week of April. (no I am not or have ever been a body builder lol ) However I have been training with a training, and nutrition etc..

so here are a few keys Nutrition is the biggest key.. (as much as I would like it not to be it is) Make sure you have a healthy plan.. not a diet.. lifetime changes.

and for those excercises.. ok here are a few.. and wow..

1. Step ups - you can use a bench or low sitting chair when you put your foot up it should be at a 90 degree angle then with the one foot on the bench/chair lift up and tap your other foot up to the top to that on one side for at least 20 build up to 50 and if you have baby you can hold baby for added weight as you get stronger.

2. Walking lunges.. nothing gets the butt like lunges.. when you lunge take long strides.. and then to mix it up do jumping lunges.. where you start in lunge position.. and jump up landing in a lunge position on the others leg do this 20 work up to 50

3. Butt Blasters.. ohhhh if you do them right you will understand.. Get in the doggy posisiton.. I put baby under my face so he is happy.
lift your one leg straight out up and down... all the way toe touches the ground but doesn't rest when you come up squeeze that toosh.. and do 50 each side each night.

4. and Cardio, cardio cardio...
also have fun.. we do stairs in our house.. it is part of my plan.. that can get it nice and tight too.

Walking will be sooo beneficial. You will notice your problem areas slim down as well as improve your general health. If you don't want to create large bulky muscles in the thighs (sometimes a result of biking and target excersises like those in buns of steel), I recommend walk, walk, walk.

Hi, S.! I swear by pilates. the eliptical machine is of course wonderful, i just think nothing beats windor pilates for re-sculpting and minimising the derriere and hips. she has a set of cds and one of them is speficially for targeting legs/buttocks/hips and abs.
when i first started doing it (4 years ago) my husband commented after the first 3 weeks-month about results. (without asking!LOL those are the best kind of compliments)

of course, as with anything, you need to do it faithfully. if you want really fast results do it 5 times a week. (only 20 minutes though, so it's not bad at all)

You probably don't have the freedom to take Pilates or Yoga right now... but there are good books that can give you some good instruction (with pictures) on how to do some excercises at home. I prefer Pilates becuase it has a more "elongating" effect on the body (like ballet has on those slim ballerinas), more so than Yoga can do. Yoga is good also for tightening things up, but it's more for flexability and feeling good--although it would improve your situation too. If you want to "sculpt" and "lengthen" yourself, try Ballet or Pilates... Go for contemporary dance influenced books rather than aerobic and strength geared books--aerobics target the "white meat" of our bodies--You want to work on the "dark meat" next to your bones that give you lenghth, not bulk. I can get you more info on classes and such. I can try to help you a bit further, but I won't boast more info unless you want it! I have a part time profession as a contemporary dancer, so I can let you know about community classes offered if you are anywhere near the Phoenix AZ area. There is a lot out there--even for beginners and for all ages!!!!

S.,

You can not pick and choose where you are going to lose weight from. You can lose body fat and although you may have it in your thigh/butt region you might lose your breast mass. The point is, if you exercise regularly you will lose body fat and gain muscle tone all over. The most important thing is your diet... you could exercise regularly and not see any results if you're not eating right.

1) Eat right - the best is smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. This speeds up your metabolism. Fruits, veggies, and protein!!!

2) Workout! Do not always do cardio - running, walking, etc. Cardio can help you lose weight but what it primarily does is trim muscle. Do exercises that help tone and tighten the muscle. If you are looking to tone the leg area do walking lunges, squats, leg kicks... I am sure you get the idea.

If you have any other questions, please ask.

The best way to lose those extra few lbs. is to stick with high reps (25-30) and a low enough weight that you can do about 4-5 sets. Also try some lunges around your house or yard, those are fabulous for those stubborn areas.

Good Luck!!

Hi S.,

Have you tried doing a full body cleanse? I did it and I dropped major inches in the butt, thigh and waist, including my arms. Toxins are stored throughout our bodies including the butt, thighs, and belly area. By cleansing your releasing the impurities as well as the fat in our bodies. Fat cells are formed to cover/wrap around the toxins to protect our body from developing diseases. If your interested, I am a wholesale distributor. I mainly purchase for myself and any friends and family who've seen my results. My website is irlenebarreda.isagenix.com. I offer free coaching, if you want it, so you can get your best results. By the way, the best side affect is that I got increased mental clarity and energy. I no longer live in a fog and have to take naps when my little ones are napping.

Have a super fantastic day!

I am a PT and unfortunately you can not "spot reduce" certain areas of the body. However, I would recommend squats and lunges. You can do them without weights until you get the form right. Then add dumbbells, cans of soup or milk jugs as needed. To help with squats, you can put an exercise ball behind your lower back and the wall.
