What Cereal Do Your Kids Eat?

Updated on March 22, 2012

My son used to be happy with cheerios and kix but now he wants lucky charms and golden grahams. Each have about 10g of sugar per serving. I allow these 2 cereals b/c they dont have partially hydrogenated oils like a lot of other kids cereals but i'm still wary about the sugar content. What cereal do your kids like that's relatively healthy?

What can I do next?

My son was raised on plain cheerios, regular corn flakes, rice chex. He did not know sugary cereals existed until a friend introduced him to the brightly colored sugary cereals. Yeah, he thought they were great. So we there began the great cereal wars. LOL

While I let him get sugary cereals sometimes, I am a lifelong Cheerios girl. You know what - he likes them also and never complains when that is what we have.

Eh, all things in moderation.

We used to only let them have certain ones but those I would not eat without putting mounds of sugar on them so I would not ask them to eat them with out it too so why not let them eat the good stuff. We usaully get offbrand what ever they want.

Great Grains with the raisins, dates, nuts.....or Quaker cereal with granola, honey, raisins. Great Grains, we always add a fruit (banana, strawberries, or peaches). The Quaker we usually do bananas but is good enough to eat alone.

My son eats Cocoa Pops dunked in his yougurt every morning. Sometimes I switch it up with Honey Cheerios or Chocolate Special K (which are my fave too). If a child eats all the right foods, how bad can these cereals be?

I get store-brand Frosted Mini Wheats and Honey Nut Cheerios as well as Mother's Graham Bumpers, which is a natural cereal. They only eat cereal a couple of times a week so I'm OK with the nutritional value of these and I like that they are all whole grain. There's better stuff out there for sure, but there's a lot worse too.

I would stay away from Lucky Charms - who needs marshmallows and artificial colors for breakfast?

We have two categories for cereal at our house - healthy and junk
Healthy can be eaten for breakfast - although I usually cook, so cereal is for breakfast only about twice per week.
Examples are: Raisin Bran, Mini Wheats, Fiber One etc. Must have at least 3 g of fiber (which I don't think that either cheerios or kix has)
Junk cereal can be anything BUT is only eaten for a dessert type snack!!!!

My step daughter only eats oatmeal when shes with us. My daughter doesn't eat cereal at all and my son right now is eating Fruit Loops, which I've never bought before. He's not a big cereal eater either so I make him eat a banana too so I don't *feel* like he's eating all sugar for breakfast! LOL!!!

Oatmeal is good because its a hot cereal and I think it keeps them full longer. Also, cream of wheat is good.

Hi sally-

My kiddos always were (and still are) fond of corn flakes...crispy rice...cheerios...and 'puffs' (wheat and rice).

I also 'set up' a big batch of oatmeal the nite before with raisins...nuts...some brown sugar and cinnamon...and add the milk (and maybe some bits of apple) before I nuke it in the morning. It was YEARS before they became aware of 'other' cereals...but by then, they were able to understand my concerns.

Even now, my eldest daughter refuses to eat some of the coffee cakes etc that I buy when some of the 'olders' are home. SHE has become the 'health food police'!!! lol

I also now sometimes get 'honey bunches of oats'...getting lax in my old age...

Best Luck!

Hot cereals served with their choice of sugar or salt with butter and milk include:
oatmeal
barley
brown rice
Often they will also have it with a fried or poached egg on top.

Cold cereals include versions of:
Cheerios
Frosted Mini Wheats
Rice Crispies
Corn Flakes
Grape Nuts (a new favorite)

SOMETIMES I will pick up a cold cereal like Honeynut Cheerios or instant oatmeal flavor packets if I find them on sale really cheap, but I do NOT buy cereal with artificial colors (like Fruity Pebbles, etc...) They can gorge on those when I did, in college. They are akin to eating a candy bar for breakfast and I will not serve them to my children. I don't care if they eat them elsewhere, though. Their grandparents love to spoil them with sugary cereal, more power to them, I say.

My kids are 3 and like to eat whatever cereal we happen to be eating. That typically is Fiber One Caramel Delight, Quaker Oatmeal Squares (brown sugar variant), or Frosted Mini Wheats bite size (brown sugar variant). They will also sometimes eat Kix, Cheerios, and Rice Krispies, although they tend to eat the Kix and Cheerios as a snack food instead.

Occasionally, I buy a fun sugar cereal from my childhood, like Crunch Berries, but when I do, I eat it in secret so they don't ever get any. :-)

We used to do hot oatmeal, but they aren't into it anymore. When we did oatmeal, we typically did the Maple and Brown Sugar, Lower sugar variant.

oatmeal and granola. I don't like the ingredients list on most cold cereals, so for the most part we just skip 'em. My husband however loves frosted mini wheats, so I give into those now and again. It has plenty of sugar, but also has good protein and fiber.

If I left it up to my son, he would pick Lucky Charms every time! I do give in every now and then and let him have them, but I mostly buy chocolate Cheerios which he likes as well. He only eats his cereal dry with milk on the side. :)

Quaker Oat Squares, Cinnamon Puffins, Cheerios, and my 2yo likes to eat Grape Nuts, if I give her spoonfuls from my bowl.

Most days, though, it's oatmeal.

I'm trying to avoid buying the sugary cereals for as long as possible. My 5yo keeps wanting to get Fruit Loops because she wants to make necklaces out of it.

My son loves Quaker Oat Squares! Tons of fiber & whole grains, but yet very yummy. Bonus-it doesn't get instantly soggy when the milk is poured on. It's not cheap though.

He will also eat Honey Nut Cheerios, Life, and sometimes granola. Sometimes he likes the Vanilla Island Kashi (but we only get that when it's on sale).

Have you tried any of the "chex" type cereals? Some have corn, some have rice, some have both. Rice crispies are liked better here than puffed rice. We don't have fans of flakes so much, unless it's crunchy nut, or daddy's Special K and Red Berries.

If they like cheerios, try other flavors. Does he like honey nut, multigrain, fruity?

I also do what I call "mixed up" cereal. I take a bit of this and that, put it in a bowl or bag and mix it up. DD might get a few cocoa pebble things but mostly kix or cheerios. Maybe some raisins, too. A treat without it all being treat. So maybe a few golden grahams with mostly something else?

Besides cheerios and kix, they like a few others. Raisin bran, krispix, special k, mini wheats.... they like peanut butter toast too, that is an easy portable breakfast :)

I dont really buy the sugar cereal. Maybe a box every couple of months. The last time they had that, i made a fruit salad with it.... and it was a rare dinner treat. (mom was not feeling well that night...lol!)
