Hi moms..
A friend of mine asked me to watch her 2 month old a few days a week. I'm not sure yet how many hours exactly. We don't have the details ironed out yet.
What would be a reasonable rate for me to charge her? I would be driving to her home which is about 20-25 minutes from my home. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. I have an early childhood teaching background with current CPR certification. I also have nanny experience.
Thanks Moms!!!

So What Happened?

Thanks moms!
Thanks so much for your time in responding!! I truly appreciated it.

There seems to be somewhat of a variety in opinions on this topic.

I feel $10 per hour is a reasonable rate to charge considering I'm doing in-home care. I guess what is very surprising to me is that I pay our dog walker $15 per visit.. (a 30 minute visit) and have gone on numerous sites for dog walking businesses and no one charged below $10 per half hour visit. Why are people willing to pay more for care for their pets than their own children? With my degree, teaching and childcare experience and CPR certification, I won't work below min wage per hour. Caring for another person's child is a huge responsibility which I take very seriously. Thanks again for all of your insightful comments!

In Chicago, I drop off my child with a WONDERFUL person - paying $75 per day (under the table) - $45 per 1/2 day when he is in school 1/2 day and she picks him up. Every now and then I bring a supply of snack items - or pay to sign him up for a class or something that she will take him to.

I pay my home care provider $50 per day per child, which I find reasonable. If you are going to the person's house, then I would factor in the gas/mileage.

Wow, I want to quit my job and get paid by some of the Mom's out there, especially when it is cash! ha!!! I used to pay $40.00 for one kid and $50.00 for two kids (for the summer). Now that she is only watching one, I just left it at $50.00 because she comes to my house and is wonderful. She is there for about 8-1/2 - 9 hours. So basically almost $6.00 an hour. I always say that 2 month old is going to be sleeping alot, and although I know some people say to charge more, I think it should be less! Or basically the same. Bring your paperwork over there when she naps so you can be productive too. I think $6.00 is reasonable. (Now, if she is a lawyer or something and makes tons and tons of money, then maybe you could ask for $7.00 or $8.00 an hour). Good luck, let us know how things turn out. Take care,

Hello PJP, I just recently started babysitting for my neighbor-friend, I watch her 2 and ahalf year old son for 10 hours on Thursday's and for 6 hours on Saturday's, I also pick up her 6 year old from school around 3 o'clock on Thursdays, I also have 3 kids of my own, my childrens ages are 11, 7 and 2 and ahalf. I don't mind doing it but it is alot of work. I feed them and do alot of activities with them as well. She pays me every two weeks and it's $200.00, she has YET to pay me. I have aton of experienc with children, I come from a huge family and have 26 neices and nephews, i did my fair share in babysitting for them as well :) I did'nt give my neighbor a "set" price on being paid, she set the price and im fine with it. But since the baby that you are going to be watching it practically a newborn you would have to consider that you are going to have to work out a schedule, I would do $10 an hour and see what she say's? I hope I was some help to your question! Good Luck!

$40-50 a day, probably 50 since you're going there. Or you can figure a daily rate and then charge extra for mileage.

depends where you live . in the California bay area , we paid 400 ever two weeks UNDER the table.. picked up and often drove the person home.. In addition, if we had a holiday off like say Christmas, we paid her for that and gave a money bonus.. There were days here and there where she needed to leave early or couldn't work. we were pretty flexible and as kids go, our son was a very easy baby/toddler... even in his 2s... he's always been even keel when it comes to his temper. or lack thereof...

When I was a nanny, I was paid 700 a week, I miss that job! LOL then when I just baby sat I charged 8 dollars an hour, and 4 for close friends. If you are going there, I would charge 10 to 15 dollars for gas a week and 8 dollars an hour, would be a good little starter to go from. I also charged more for infants, just because of the fact to make myself feel better I was train in infant CPR, just like you. =)

We pay $14/hour for experienced sitters (ie. moms or daycare workers who are picking up some extra cash on nights and weekends) and $10/hour for highschool-aged sitters. That includes tip. We always drive the highschool sitter home after the job.

I would charge per the hour. I watch my neighbor's baby once a week, and I charge $50/day. It started from 7am-3:30, and now some days it is 7am - 5:30pm. So, essentially, some days I am getting screwed with pay. And this child is very fussy, so not even worth the $50/day. I should have asked for $100.

We pay our nanny $10 per hour, cash, every 2 weeks. We have one child. After interviewing many nannies I have learned that the rate tends to go up by $1/hr with every additional child.
