What Age Do You Give Children a Pillow?

Hi moms! My daughter (almost 9 months old) had been sick for a couple of weeks and I was propping her up on pillows when she slept so she could actually breath better. It helped a little (and I was sleeping next to her so I knew she would be safe). It seems as though my baby likes the idea of sleeping on a pillow now. My baby is also cutting 4 top teeth right now and I think that the elevation of being on the pillow helps ease her discomfort a tad. After this bout of teething is over with, perhaps she won't want the pillow anymore. At what age did your children start using a pillow? Seems to me that 9 months is still to young. Thanks moms!

So What Happened?

Thanks moms! A couple of weeks after my baby was feeling better the novelty of the pillow wore off. It's back to her head on the mattress!

I think my boys were closer to 2 yrs when they started using pillows. I agree, 9 months does seem a bit young....how well does she roll over & hold her head up? That's kinda the key to your answer. My youngest was congested & had frequent colds (thanks to his older brohter being in preschool!) the 1st year so I bought a wedge at Baby's R Us that I put on top of his mattress & under the fitted sheet. It helped tremendously so maybe you could try that. You might want to ask you ped. about the pillow usage before you continue. Best of luck!

I gave my daughters pillows when they transitioned into a toddler bed, which for us happened around 18 months. If sleeping with her head elevated seems to help, you could put the pillows under the end of the crib mattress so it is a bit tilted. Then you don't have to worry about her suffocating on the pillow but her head is still elevated. I used to do that when my babies were sick.

When my son was sick at that age, we propped him up by putting the pillow UNDER the head of the mattress. Same effect but no puffy stuff.

I didn't give him a pillow to sleep with until he moved to a toddler bed at 2.

Hope this helps.

My son has had allergies and asthma since he was 6 weeks old and what I always did was to raise the head of his mattress in the crib about 2 inches and I always used Vics Vaporub on his chest (you can get it in a cream that isn't greasy) or in a vaporizer.

My son also got used to a pillow because he slept (or rather sleeps) with us a lot. We use memory foam pillows, so they don't move around. He is 20 months old now, and he has had a pillow in his crib since he was about 15 months.

All my kids started using a pillow around 2. 9 months does seem too young to me, but I know how hard it is when it seems to make her feel better, but I wouldn't think it would be safe, especially when she is sleeping by herself. I would try elevating her crib mattress...this is what the dr. told us to do when our kids were congested. We just put books under the mattress until when had the desired angle. Also, you could try putting a thin pillow or foam wedge under the crib sheet...but make sure it isn't too fluffy.

I guess it varies. I never gave my son a pillow until he was around 9 or so... when I bought him a waterbed. Before that, he never asked and never missed it.
