Weird Reaction to Mosquito Bites in Toddler?
My little boy was bitten by a mosquito yesterday afternoon on three spots on his leg. I saw this almost immediately after it happened... I know it was a mosquito because I saw it flying around and tried to swat it but without success! The little welts popped up like normal. However, this morning, 2 of the 3 have turned into nickel-sized welts, are swollen and hot. I can't figure it out. Maybe he has some mild allergy to one type of mosquito? Any thoughts/ideas? He is not in any pain and doesn't touch or itch them. He just doesn't want them touched by me!

My husband and children all react to mosquito bites in this way, sometimes even significantly larger than what you are describing. I think some people just react differently to the bites. I don't think you need to worry, but I understand how you feel. I always feel so bad for my children, because they're so small and these bites are so huge! I just always keep the mosquito repellant nearby if we're going to be out. :-)

My daughter is allergic to mosquito bites as well. The same thing happens to her. I just put some Benedryl cream on it and it gets better. Just make sure to spray him with Off or some type of bug repellent when you know you will be outdoors to try to keep the bites to a minimum.

My 2 yr old gets the same way. I had to finally take him to his peditrician & they prescribed a medicine called Luxiq. It is a mousse type medicine & when I put it on him, the redness & swelling almost immediately go down. He still has the bites for a couple of days but they aren't nearly as bad & he doesn't throw a fit when I touch them. I love this stuff. I also use a insect repellant called Naturapel, not sure on the spelling, but it doesn't have Deet in it & that helps alot also. I got mine from Wal-mart in the section where they keep the bombs & foggers for ant's & roaches. I hope it gets better, cause I know how my little one feels when he gets them.

I got bit by a mosquito a few weeks ago and it got me on about 5-6 spots on the back of my legs and all the bites were about the size of a nickel on my legs too. Both of my toddlers are having the same reaction too and the bites usually look about the size of a nickel and then get smaller as time goes on.
I know the ones I had were so itchy!

JS,
This has been happening to my 3 year old lately too.
The welts are quite big and very red/hot. They also get a small ring around them after a few days making them appear like a bull’s eye.
I think we must have some kind of super mosquito since all of the rain.
I just put an ice cube on the area as soon as I can to help with the swelling and use a cortisone cream for a few days. If they start to bug (no pun intended) him you can give him some Benadryl to give him some relief and it would help with the swelling as well.

Hi! I have an 11 year old step-son and a 3 year old daughter whom both have the exact same reaction to mosquito bites as your little boy. We've seen a doctor several times (especially with the oldest) about this and it's just an allergic reaction. Often times I'll just put a little cortizone cream on them and in a few days it'll go away but there have also been times that my stepson's ankle has swollen to the size of a baseball because of the bites and then the doctor usually recommends that I just give him some benadryll or other type of allergy medication. The only one that I've found works best is giving them children's claritin. Generally as long as they aren't touching the bites they are fine but my children have often told me that when they are touched it is sore. I would definitely keep a close eye on him when he has the bites just to make sure that they don't develope into anything serious however don't fret about it too much. With all of the rain we've had recently I would definitely suggest using some kind of a bug spray on him when he goes out.

My son is desperately allergic to mosquitos. I just give him benadryl when he gets bitten and the swelling goes down almost immediately.
Hope this helps!

My son has had the same problem and some formed HUGE blisters. I feel so bad for him because I can tell he's miserable. Here's what works for us - -
1. Warm Aveeno Baths
2. Cortizone Cream
3. Benadryl on an as needed basis
The first two seem to help keep it under control.
