Weight Gain - Denver,CO

My happy 16 month (13 months age-adjusted) baby girl is getting the RSV shots this winter season because she was so small at birth. So, each month we have a "weigh in" which is kind of fun because when she was in the NICU, we got to weigh her every night. Well, in December she was 16 pounds 4 ounces, in January she was 16 pounds 5 ounces and just today she is (still) 16 pounds 9 ounces. Should I be concerned that she hasn't gained very much weight in three months? Or do all babies hit a plateau? I was sure she was bigger than that. I know she's crawling everywhere and probably burning a ton of calories. I am thankful that she is gaining some weight - every ounce counts right? - but 5 ounces in three months!?

What can I do next?

Hi K.,

We have a lot in common, my sweet daughter was born 12 weeks pre-mature 4 1/2 years ago, I had severe hypertension and than got the HELLP Syndrome too. We also had synergis shots to prevent RSV. Our doctor's told us with a preemie like ours you have to look at ounces like pounds, the average weight for a full term baby to gain is about 1 pound per month, for tiny preemies it is 1 oz per month. It sounds like she is hitting her milestones and as long as she is happy and eating good I don't think you have anything to worry about. We were told by various people that it takes at least 3 years (sometimes 5) for preemies to catch up. Congratulations on your baby, I know the road for a preemie can sometimes be long. Like I said our daughter is now 4 and she is doing great, still on the light side for weight, however she eats all the time. Your little one will be fine!!!

Is she eating well?
Is she hitting her developmental milestones?
Does she look emaciated?

If the answer to these are yes, then don't worry.

She is burning a ton of calories with the crawling. As long as she is not losing weight, she is fine. It does not matter what her percentile is. My 15mo. is in the 25th percentile for height, but in the 3rd for weight. for a long time we were not even on the chart. Not every baby can be in the 90th percentile (and for a lot of babies it's not even healthy for them to be there). As long as they follow their own growth curve and don't remain stagnant for too long don't worry.

You didn't mention how old your daughter is, so I'm going off the fact that she's crawling. That is a very hard age to put on weight. Gaining is good. I get frustrated with the doctors sometimes when the tell me to make sure my son gains weight and when we do everything we can and he doesn't, they tell me he's fine. We, too, fight for every ounce and are grateful to be any where on the growth chart. We've battled failure to thrive and all with him. I wouldn't worry if the doctor's aren't worried. It's great that she's crawling and getting into things. She is probably just burning off everything she eats. After a while, you'll probably see that she has grown up, just not out. Our son would get super skinny at those times. He now, at almost 3 has reached between 10 and 25 percentile, depending on the visit. His height is around 50%, so still way skinny. I would just offer a lot of snacks and such. We did very high fat - at least as much as he tolerated, which wasn't much - and about the only thing he drank or drinks is whole milk. Carnation Instant Breakfast, 1 serving to 10 oz. whole milk, is a common formula substitute and we did that until he was almost 2. It has 10 calories more per ounce than dose formula. You're at a really hard stage for weight gain, and walking (running) is only going to make it harder. As if it hasn't been already, be prepared for an uphill battle. There were times until age 2 that our son would grow significantly taller, yet loose weight because of his constant activity. I think 5 ounces in 3 months sounds great for a struggling baby. We went 6 months (age 4-10 months) with nothing! Hang in there. I know it's hard not to worry. If the doctor isn't concerned, relax. If you have concerns about the doctor, by all means, see someone else for a second opinion. Our doctor puts stock into the fact that our son is bigger as far as how the clothes fit, even if it can't be measured medically, so the fact that you perceive growth is reassuring. Enjoy keeping up with her and don't worry! :)

Some kids are just smaller! Alot of it is genetic! Is she happy and eating normally? Also, since she is geting weighed more often you are so aware of the number. What did the Dr,say?

Hang in there! I know it is tough. If your doctor isn't concerned, then I wouldn't worry too much. My daughter struggled with growth issues as well, and didn't hit that 20 pound mark until she was almost two! It is tough, but if she is eating and developing appropriately, meeting her milestones and the Doctor is OK with how things are progressing, then I think she is probably OK. If you are concerned, it is worth a phone call to the doc to chat for a couple minutes and get reassurance. Doctors expect those kind of calls and are usually willing to answer your questions.

Hang in there!
