Hi -- try Holly's Place in south Lake Tahoe -- it is a group of small, well-appointed cabins with kitchens on 2.5 acres that are COMPLETELY GATED -- so your little one can run to his heart's content and be safe! My aunt and uncle own a motel called the Rustic Cottages in south shore (Tahoe Vista)www.rusticcottages.com . Most of the cabins have a small kitchen. They're very cute and a short drive to Northstar if you want to go skiing or skating.

The cottages are lovely with litte kitchens. In the main lodge there's complimentary breakfast (make your own waffles), and they have a movie library and free popcorn for cozy nights in. It's near Northstar if you wanted to ski, but there are also sled parks nearby. We're hoping to go back this winter.

There is a sort of hotel on the southshore that rents timeshares. Each room is a suite with 2 bedrooms and a kitchen with all the basics (dishes, pans, etc). I think it is called Lakeland Village (in Cali, not Lakeside in nv). It is very reasonable and comfortable. It is on route 50, right on the beach, but all the rooms are set back from the road. I always send family there (we live on the Nevada side of town). I also recommend Blue Angel restaurant on Ski Run - they have a toy box in the corner and are very family friendly. Good for lunch or dinner. Also be sure to go to the tahoe totspot on emerald bay road. They have a ball pit, trampoline, lots of toys (0-4 years old kids). And a consignment shop with kids stuff. Have a great trip!

I like VRBO. There are tons of great choices for reasonable prices. One thing you MUST ensure and drill the owner about is that the place must be child proofed. One owner was less than upfront with me (although I told her I had a toddler) and the place we got was a toddler deathtrap - a rickety spiral staircase with huge slats that we had to barricade off with every piece of furniture in the house, a flesh sizzling, gas burning stove/heater in the middle of the living room. We ended up leaving a day early because we were so frazzled from trying to keep our toddler from killing himself.

We rented a home in March...cozy, kid friendly, 3 bedroom in Christmas Valley, perfect! It sits on a wilderness preserve about 15 minutes drive to South Shore. You will never even need to leave, though. It was perfect for my 4 and 2 year old. Great for sledding in the backyard, perfect terrain, just what you want. We went with another family and just had the best time.

We rent out a cabin in Incline Village that is owned by our family. Since we have two kids, there is a pack n play, highchair, etc. there to use. That is peak season so we would charge $160/night. It is a 2-bedroom plus loft-style bedroom. I can send you pics if you want. It is newly remodeled inside and is really nice. It is also on vrbo although I do not know the # (my husband does that).

We always rent from the Accommodation Station.

My husband and I took a honeymoon trip to Tahoe/Yosemite last winter and stayed a few places but the one I want to recommend is called Rustic Cottages in Tahoe Vista 1-888-7RUSTIC. They have cabins with kitchenettes and it was pretty affordable I think (my husband made all the arrangements though, so I can't be sure). They have a main lodge with breakfast (make your own waffles) and have dvds/videos to borrow if you want. I think there were board games in the lodge and they may have other family-oriented stuff too. It's close to the lake and there's a sledding hill not too far away. I would definitely go back there again! (The owners/staff were great too.)

I don't have a specific rental agency/condo name handy but I highly recommend the north shore over the south shore. The drive is much easier (very important with a toddler!) and it's just a more family friendly area. Truckee is a fun town to explore on the way in or out, historic buildings, cute shops and great, inexpensive restaurants. We've taken our three kids up there every year since they were born, both summer and winter. We've stayed in various condos and cabins mostly in and around the Tahoe City area. There are TONS of rentals. Oh, and AVOID NORTHSTAR. They are so overdeveloped that the traffic on their little two lane road is a NIGHTMARE! (It's too bad because that's one of the places we used to enjoy.) Good luck & have fun!

Noah's Cabin. Very well priced, 1 bedroom cabin but with room in the living room. Kitchen. The guy that rents it out is really nice.
You'll have to google it. It is also just a block from the lake and from town but still in the woods.

My mother in law has a vacation house in Nevada City she rents out (http://www.vrbo.com/159480). We have been going there for a couple of years and my kids are now 5 and almost 4. It is nice not having to drive all the way up to Truckee/Tahoe and it is only a short drive to snow play areas.

I have a timeshare in Tahoe, but I would need the exact dates in order to see if anything is available. You could use a 1 bedroom with one bath, full kitchen, fireplace. Depending on what Phase is available you can get a washer & dryer in the Unit, or a Washer & Dryer not in the unit and to wash and dry would be free. the elevation is about 7,000 feet

We stay at Brockway Springs every summer for a week. During the winter we usually stay for 3 or 4 days as well and love it. My in-laws have a place they rent out which is a 3 bedroom 2 1/2 bath place otherwise other owners rent there condos out as well and they range from 1 bedroom 1 bath up to 4 beds 3 baths. These are all private condos for Rent or privately owned. They have a grass area right outside the condos that face the water and you can sled there. Brockway Springs is located on the boarder of California and Neveda next to Kings Beach. You can see there website at www.brockwaysprings.com

I've had great luck with the website www.vrbo.com (which stands for vacation rental by owner). Individual owners of homes/apts/condos/etc list their vacation rentals on this site. You deal with the owner directly. Though we have not rented in Tahoe, we did use the site and found a great place to stay in Hawaii. When you have a family and want a kitchen it's a great resource. Listings vary from ultra luxury homes to modest studios and everything in between. Good luck finding something and have a great time in Tahoe!

if u were planning on going up toward north lake tahoe (hwy 80), consider something closer, about an hour closer! soda springs/serene lakes is closer than tahoe and truckee w/ a cute neighborhood, sled hill (or u could sled anywhere around the neighborhood, even on the road, very vacant!)...it's next to sugarbowl ski resort, soda springs ski resort, donor ski resort, and royal gorge xctry ski resort...all w/in 1-5mins. we LOVE the area...it has more snow there than anywhere in CA! more than tahoe! have fun!
