Vitamin B-6 for Morning Sickness

I am coming to the end of my first trimester so hopefully my nausea will begin to go away, but I was getting very run down from it and decided to start taking a vitamin B-6 supplement since I have read numerous places, and was told by my doctor, that this can sometimes help with the queasy feeling. I just started taking it 3 days ago and have been feeling much better.

However, I was reading some additional information this morning and "they" only recommend 1.9mg/day of B-6 for women, including those who are pregnant/nursing. My supplement has 50 mg/pill (I take 1 each day). Does anyone know if this is too much to be taking? I would bet my life that my doctor said I could take anywhere from 50-100 mg/day. Has anyone else taken B-6 as a supplement and was it that much? I'm just nervous that I'm overloading my system with something that might be harmful. Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

I took 100 mg of B6 and everything was fine. It is water soluble, so it's hard to overdo it. My doctor okayed it, and he was extremely knowledgeable and dealt with high risk pregnancies primarily.
Another good book is "Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition" by Marilyn Shannon, MD. It deals with all kinds of research about how nutrition affects women (getting pregnant, miscarriages, side effects during pregnancy, etc.) and lists safe ranges of vitamins. She says 100 mg of B6 is a safe dose, and it's the amount you need to make a difference in the nausea.
On another note, I don't agree with the person that basically said to just deal with the nausea. Some people don't have the extreme nausea and don't understand how it is! I did, and I was so miserable, and it's not healthy if you get dehydrated. There were times I had a "normal" nausea that I could see why others were able to tolerate it, but most of the time it was way worse and I almost felt I wanted to die. So, whatever you need to do to keep your strength and attitude up, you should do.
Hang in there!!!

I am a vegetarian and so this might make a difference - but my midwife had me taking 3000 mcg of B-12 (and still) - but in the first trimester to help with the nausea. It helped a lot. Maybe you could try a supplement with both?

Katheryn,
Hi! Vitamin B has no toxicity unless you take more than ###-###-#### mg/day for many months-years even. Really, the B vitamin complex is water soluble so whatever your body does not use will just be excreted in your urine. Double check with your doc if you are really concerned but I think (whatever its worth) that you should be okay. Plenty of women take CRAZY meds to control their morning sickness (some by absolute necessity) and their kids are fine. Good luck to you!

My Best Advice is to just take your prenatal vitamins. I know it can be very hard to deal with the morning sickness, but remember if your sick that is an indicator you WILL NOT miscarry, it is the bodies defense! Now if your feeling ill sip some Peppermint Tea the type with no caffeine. Raspberry tea is Great for acid reflux or heartburn.

***NEVER EVER DRINK PENNYROYAL TEA--IT INDUCES ABORTION!!!

From Earl Mindell's Vitamin Bible--copyright 1991--Check with a newer version as well as print out and check with YOUR DOCTOR to see if accurate!
Earl is a PHD as well as pharmasist and herbalist. I believe there is more to his credentials but that is all I can remember at this time of the morning!

Earl's advice on vitamin B is if pregnant check with YOUR Doctor-- BEFORE taking sustained doses of over 50 mg of vitamin B6.

B1 Pregnant--suggested in book--1.5 to 1.6 mg daily
B2 Pregnant--suggested in book--1.6 mg
B6 Pregnant--suggested in book--2.1 mg
B12 Pregnant--suggested in book--2.6 mcg***

B13 Pregnant--suggested in book--Not enough research done to give recommendation---this printing is 1991--time for me to
up-date!!!

B15 Pregnant--suggested in book--No information.
B17 Pregnant--suggested in book--No information.

A GREAT book to buy and live by is the Earl Mindell "Vitamin Bible" as above information is from, as well as his "Herb Bible".
The Vitamin Bible has a whole section on Pregnancy and warnings and what you can take and should do as well as what to avoid. The book is like $7-8.oo and tells you a wealth of knowledge. I use mine so much that it falls apart. I must up-date from time to time as new information is always becoming available. This one I bought when pregnant with my second son Mason who is now 9 years old and in November turns 10!

This book will tell you Foods to eat instead of taking medicines or vitamins then the choice is yours to make--Medicine, Vitamins or Food! We choose Food first then work towards the meds but that is just me. If I can cure myself and family with Food we do!
I hope this helps you some. Check out his web-site as well, Earl Mindell--you can ask questions and get specific answers from medical experts.
And ALWAYS Double Check with your own Doctor!

Best of Luck to you both!

In my first pregnancy I had mild morning sickness but during my second one, nausea attacked me severely. I was at my wits end unable to eat and drink anything unless I started drinking No to morning sickness tea.
