Hi Moms,

I'm writing about myself, not my kids this time. I've had a fever for 4 nights in a row. I start to feel better during the day, but it comes back at night. I went to the doctor; he did blood work and said my white blood cell count indicates that my body is fighting off a virus. We are supposed to leave for a 12 hour car trip tomorrow to see family-our first vacation in a LONG time! Waaaa! I feel like a grouchy toddler!

Do any of you have info. regarding fever reducing meds.- tylenol, advil, etc-which is better? Any natural remedies? My throat and nose feel fine, thank goodness!

Thanks for your suggestions!
D.

One word: Occilococcinum! It is easy to find at HEB, People's RX, and will kick a flu in the teeth! Works great with kids too!. Totally safe. Happy Vacationing!

My mom always gives us an old English remedy and its very simple! Boiling water, squeeze 1-2 wedges of lemon and then sweeten with honey. The citrus and vitam c really vamps up the immune system and the subtle fumes attack any unknown congestion you might have. I'm not a big fan of lemon, but it really does work.

Moms other motto is "C's and Z's" Natural whole oranges and lots of sleep. Good luck!

I know that it sounds like an old remedy but it works, I would always at the first sign give my family chicken soup, take some in a thermos and if you start to feel the signs of a cold drink it, have chicken soup or chicken and dumpling. Like it sounds funny to do but it did work for my family did not have to many days missed from school or work at our house.Good luck.

Did your doctor do a test for the Flu? Honestly, I wouldn't go... If you have a fever, then you are contagious. (Can you imagine if everyone catches the cold from you... You're all sick out there together?!)

D.-Have you been tested for the flu? Based on your symptoms, that's what it sounds like. Don't want to scare you, but I'd definitely be tested for that, especially with the cases of Swine flu increasing here in Central TX. You can't be too careful. Also, you may want to reconsider your trip. I'm sure you wouldn't want to pass your virus on to the rest of your family, plus if you're not feeling well, you won't have the best of times. Your trip can always be rescheduled when you're feeling better.

Hope you feel better soon!

I agree with what some of the others have said, and would make sure you don't have the flu. Did the doctor prescribe Tamiflu? Anybody that is having flu like symptoms is supposed to be given Tamiflu. In late May both my children came down with a virus (but both tested negative for the flu), and the doctor still treated them with tamiflu just to be on the safe side. I would hold off on a trip also until you are feeling better and until you make sure your husband and kids don't get sick also. It's better to be safe than sorry. Plus, you want to enjoy your trip seeing family, not miserable with fever and chills the whole time! Good luck and I hope you feel better!!

As the other poster said, you are probably pretty contagious if you're still having fever (even during the day when you feel fine). I would recommend Motrin for fever. It tends to last longer than Tylenol, but I guess you should use whatever works best for you and makes you feel the best. If you're fighting off a virus, all you can do is treat the symptoms until it's out of your system. If you decide to go on your trip, I would recommend having someone else drive for sure and try to stay away from everyone (although cooped up in the car won't help with that) as much as possible until your fever has been gone for 12-24 hours. If your only symptom is the fever, then treat that and try to get LOTS of liquids (no caffeine) and LOTS of rest. Good luck to you! We have been fighting illness in my house all summer and we're supposed to fly to Florida next week and my daughter came down with a virus the other day. Trying to be sure my son doesn't catch it, so I can feel your pain! Feel better.

You should be alternating tylenol/ibuprofen (doesn't matter what brand) to control the fever/achiness every 4 hours. That way you stay covered but don't overdose on either medication. If you're only taking it every 8 hrs you can take 600-800mg ibuprofen at a time. Also drink plenty of fluids and get as much rest as possible.

I always take aspirin for fever. Drink lots of fluids--water, juice, gatorade, etc. Vitamin C and echinacea are two things I add when I feel like I'm coming down with something...Tylenol doesn't work for me. Last week there was a story in the news about acetaminophen and its harmful effects on the liver--recommended dosage was lowered. Take care!
