Vasectomies and Pregnancy -

My boyfriend had a vasectomy about 10 years ago and has 2 children 14 yr old boy and 12 yr old girl. I am 33 and I already have one son he is 14. I am not on any birth control and I am now late. I always have my period around the end of the month every month and not ever late. I have not had one since December and it is now the third week into February. Can you get pregnant even if your partner has had a vasectomy? Yes, he has had one and not just saying he did. Or could I just be late? Do you know anyone this has happened to or experienced this? Do you know any statistics on this? I read that it can happen and it happens to about 1 in 2,000 women. Can that be true?

Thanks ladies…

My dad has a vasectomy after I was born in 1980. Thirteen years later, my mom got pregnant with my sister. Not common, but it happens. I think it depends when he got it because the way they used to have it in the past was different than the way they do it now. But yes, it's possible. I'd take a test!

My ex son in law had 3 before it finally worked. And yes he had them, his mom took him to all three. He has numerous children and had several of them after the vasectomies. Sometimes something just happens and those little buggers find an alternative route through some duct that got missed or something.

I had an ovarian cyst, and didn't get my period for 3 mos. It's not uncommon for women to miss a period, but if you miss more than one, you should see your doctor to rule out anything else.

Get to the Dr. for sure. I missed a period one month and it turned out I had a large cyst.

I don’t know if it’s common but a co-worker of mine who was in her late 40’s got pregnant. Like your husband he’d had a vasectomy years before.

Other than abstinence no form of birth control is 100% effective.
Best of luck!

Since it is not considered 100% effective birth control, you definitely can get pregnant. An older procedure can also come "undone."

See your doc, have some testing done but it certainly can be possible. The first time it was done with my husband, he gave them the "sample" for them to check all was well but it wasn't. So he had to have some extra work done. While it's rare, things certainly can grow back on their own, etc.

Buy a pregnancy test and have your guy go give a sample to be tested - they can grow back together in some rare cases...

Yes it can happen. You should also ask him if he ever went back for the follow up appt where they check to see if there are any swimmers left.

There are other causes of missed periods, as others here have said. I also had a friend that started perimenopause in her early 30s. I would take a test, then see your doctor.

Every once in a while a guy will get a vasectomy and, instead of cutting the vas deferens a vein will be cut. Very rare, since all samples are sent for pathology confirmation. But if it isn't followed up and the pt isn't notified then it can be trouble. You've basically got a guy walking around who thinks they're shooting blanks but actually has live ammo. My advice is to get an OTC pregnancy test and, if positive, have your husband get a copy of his medical record to review.

I had a friend in high school whose parents were getting older had a vasectomy baby. That was many years ago and I'm hoping the techniques are a little more reliable these days. But, I suppose it can happen.

There are lots of things that can throw your periods off. Stress, some type of other medical thing you might not be aware of. I had endometriosis and almost never had periods.
It could be anything. Have you taken a test?

It happens. I read a question on here about 6 months ago of a woman who was asking how to be happy after getting pregnant. Her husband had a vasectomy 7 years prior. Her youngest was seven, oldest 11, I think.

I would go get a test, to confirm whether you are or aren't.

Although rare, yes, it can happen. Please take a home pregancy test and ease your mind--one way or the other it is best to know where you stand.
