I actually lived in Puerto Rico for two years, but that was a long time ago. My husband and I went back for a vacation and loved it.

My biggest advice to you: get out of San Juan. Okay, spend a day or two there and go to the tourist sights- El Morro, Old San Juan, the Barcardi Rum Factory, etc., but then LEAVE.

Fajardo has a beautiful resort called the El Conquistador. Look at the website, it's amazing. That is where the hubs and I stayed when we went.

If you are taking the kids, arrange for a tour of the Rain Forrest. You will love it.

If you are familiar with VRBO, you may want to look at condos in Luquillo, (pronounced low-key-yo). The beach there is beautiful.

Finally, look into days trips to Culebra and Vieques.

Enjoy the food, sights and sounds (listen for the coqui frog- you will only hear it in Puerto Rico!) of this beautiful island. Have fun planning!

I went years ago. I remember that there was an island of monkeys, and that there is a pretty cool phenomenon where plankton in the water near the mangroves phosphorese (sp?), you can do a kayak excursion to get near to the phosphorescent waters.

Also, you might want to try RINCON, where you can get good surfing and whale watching.

I remember liking their mofongo, and tostones. Two dishes made from plantain.

Have a great trip, and happy planning.

When my husband would travel there for work, they had an armed guard escort them on a bus.
Be careful.

We went on a cruise in January and one of our ports was San Juan. We did our only excursion through the cruise ship there and visited El Yunque (the rainforest) and the old fort. It was AMAZING! We got a driving tour of Old San Juan as well. It was a gorgeous island, but I can see where we wouldn't want to explore on our own.

My sister and her husband spent a week there last September as well, well I guess September 2011. They LOVED it.

I'm not sure what to do if you are going to STAY there versus stop on a cruise ship...but we loved it and woulc go back.
