I would like to try to use some ginger to try to alleviate "morning sickness" that I have with my pregnancy, which is not just in the morning, it is kind of all day. Any suggestions on what form of ginger to use and how?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the responses to my request. I have tried drinking ginger ale, which really helps to calm my stomach down. I am also sucking on candies, lemon candies, suckers. I keep some crackers by my bed to eat a few before I get up in the morning. I have some ginger snaps, but have not yet tried to eat them. Thank you so much!

I have the same problem and I drank giner ale and ate ginger snaps. Also keep something in my mouth like lifesavers to suck on which helped as well.

I drank decaf ginger tea. It did help a lot when I was sick, but now I can't drink it at all because it makes me think of nausea when I drink it. Good luck!

K.,

Thank you for posting this one!!! I just took a home test that came back positive and am waiting to see my doc the beginning of Dec for a due date. But the reson I took the test is because of how bad I've been feeling. Your post and answers you got will be very helpful in trying to get back to feeling "normal". It can be very hard taking care of 3 kids when you just don't feel good & I don't want to tell them why mommy isn't feeling good yet.

Congratz on all your little ones & good luck in feeling better soon!

I usually drank ginger ale, and I think Schweppes still sells theirs in glass bottles.

I am not able to help you with the ginger question but I do have a suggestion for the nausea. There is a pressure point on the inside of your wrist/arm that has REALLY helped me out. Place 3 fingers of your right hand on your left wrist (bend your wrist and place your ring finger as close to your hand as you can on your arm). Mentally mark where your pointer finger ends on your wrist then place pressure in the middle of the inside of your arm right at that spot. On my arm I can just feel end end of my tendons and I can see the veins on my arm end there.
A HUGE congratulations on baby 4 and GL w/ your pregnancy. I hope this helps some.

Also try candied ginger. You can get it at health food stores or Trader Joe's.

I feel your pain with morning sickness. With my first pregnancy (girl) I was sick the whole pregnancy. With my second (boy) I was sick about 2-3 months and then it got better.
I looked everywhere for ginger in the amount my doctor said I could use but couldn't find it.
Then, someone gave me this information for a compounding pharmacy who makes Anti-Nausea Capsules.

Here is the information if you want to try it:
We compound an "Anti-Nausea Capsule" that contains the following: Vitamin B-6, Vitamin B-12, Folic Acid, Calcium Carbonate, and Ginger root. We have many morning sickness patients who have used it with success. You use one capsule 2-3 times daily as needed. It costs $30.00 for 30 capsules; $55.00 for 60 capsules; and $80.00 for 90 Capsules. (i'm not sure if the price is the same since I used them 5 and 3 years ago) WE appreciate the opporunity to be your compounding pharmacy. We ship all across the country, and accept most insurance plans for reimbursement.
Sincerely,

The Anti-Nausea Capsules contain:
B-6 - 25 mg.
B-12 - 12 micro grams
Folic Acid - 0.5 mg.
Calcium Carbonate - 200 mg
Ginger Root - 250 mg

You will need a perscription from your doctor to get them. My doctor said everything in the pills are safe while pregnant. I tried them with my second child and didn't have the morning sickness as bad. :D

Hope this helps you!

Congratulations!

Lots of great suggestions here for ginger. I would also like to offer lemon as one. With my 4th pregnancy, lemon was the only thing that calmed my stomach. I would drink lemonade, homemade frozen lemon slushies, lemon hard candies, lemon gun... anything lemon seemed to help! I didn't try it with my first three and I wasn't as sick with my 5th, but if I ever started to feel bad with the 5th, I immediately got something lemon. When lemonade was too sweet, I would just put several lemon slices in water. That seemed to help too. Good luck with your pregnancy and with baby #4!

When I was pregnant with both of my kids, I lived in Africa. I learned from the women there that a tea made with a couple slices of fresh ginger and sweetened with honey would work wonders. Another one from them... Make a tea using fresh lemongrass and honey. (Or you could look for an herbal tea with lemongrass.) Also, when I was pregnant in the US, I found that nibbling on crystallized ginger helped a lot. You can probably find most of this in a bigger grocery - especially now that we're close to the holidays. Otherwise a natural foods store would be sure to have them. Good luck!

Hi K.,
I see you already received many great suggestions. I had terrible morning sickness as well, and found these tablets
http://tinyurl.com/ybzumsu
helped me a lot. they're called "peppermint ginger". I used 2 or 3 to make a hot tea. I also liked plain old saltine crackers.

They have popsicles and such designed to help. I never tried them. I used to drink ginger beer. Stewerts ginger beer and that really helped me. Or you can brew up some ginger tea (or lemonade). Make a simple syrup with 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup of water and a slices of shredded fresh ginger. Just heat the sugar, ginger and water in a small sauce pan until the sugar is completely dissolved. When cool use as a sweetener for lemonade or tea. For some reason I really craved lemonade during my pregnancies. If its not strong enough make the next batch stronger.

You can mince it with a fine grater or a garlic press and then make tea. Ginger snaps are good. You can make your own ginger ale.

Also, peppermint tea is supposed to help a lot.

I was going to use that same remedy with my last pregnancy and was advised by doctor to not use the ginger capsules, as they are classified as "herbal" and there are no regulations, or studies on the effects of a fetus. She told me I could buy ginger, and shave it and add it to food, or try the old fashion idea of gingerale, or maybe even ginger candy. But always ask your Dr. first. They know best!

When I was pregnant I use to keep a box of ginger snap cookies by my bed. It was right there when I woke up and I didn't have wait for the water to get warm for the ginger tea. I would eat about 2 or 3 before getting out of bed and then after a few I would be fine. I would keep those and some saltine crackers with me at all time because my sickness was all day long. Hope that helps.

There are a ton of ways ginger can be used. I have nausea but for other reasons. Ginger comes in: Salad dressings, soy/teriyaki sauces, teas, candies, ginger snaps (make your own so you can use fresh ginger and add a little more.) Use fresh ginger in stir fry's or as a marinade on chicken/fish. If you learn to cook with ginger you will be able to add it to all of your meals. Salad dressing: olive oil, besalmic vinegar, OJ, garlic, ginger. You can also buy ginger supplements at the health food store, all natural safe to take... just like garlic pills or similar.
Also, try peppermints to suck on throughout the day.

TEA. You can BUY ginger tea or make your own w/ a little ground ginger and hot water. Put a little lemon in it if you want.

ALSO......peppermint calms the stomach and aids in digestion, so might want to keep some peppermints in your purse. The peppermint TEA is EXCELLENT too. Shouldn't have any problem finding peppermint this time of year!
