Urinary Reflux, Does Anyone Know About This Condition?

My 5yroldson was diagnosed with urinary reflux, sometimes theres a surgery and sometimes if its just stage 1 or 2 theyll give your child prevenitive meds and let the probelm correct itself. My husband had this problem when he was 6 and had major surgery.It is most likely hereditary.My son was Diagnosed at age 3.We did a new procedure called cysto-deflux.This is where the go threw the urethera and put in this gel looking stuff around the ureturs and close the deformity.Unfortantly
my son had the worst so this procedure didn't work for him.They had to reroute his ureturs and he had a 3 day stay at the hospital.It is amazing how quick littles ones get over major surgery.We used Dr. Mark Baraza.He was an exellent Dr.
I can't tell you how much a good Dr.makes the difference.My son was on the move and I couldn't slow him down about two weeks after surgery. hope this helps.

Hi A.. My 8 yr old just went through this a few months ago. She was having alot of problems with her kidneys. The procedure was done as an outpatient. Took maybe 30 minutes. With Lilli there was no iv or anything. They went up from her uretha and basically opened everything up to make sure there was no blockages causing the problems. Lilli had a little burning at first but within a day or so she was fine. After the procedure she hasn't had any other problems. I hope your little girl does ok and this helps her too.

You can have the voiding cystogram done. It is done in the Radiologic Department by the Radiologist. They stick a catheter in with iondiated contrast that will let them see if there is any reflux. Some children do really well and others cry cause it seems scary. I am a Radiology Tech and have to help preform these procedures so I've seen several done from 12 months to 5 year olds but mainly in girls if it's mild enough they say they will usually out grow it and if staged higher meds are given to help with it. If you think your child will not do well they can do the sedation, like they give you when you get your wisdom teeth pulled. But I'd discuss it with your doctor and see what he suggest. Good luck...

My daughter is 18 months old and was diagnosed with this when she was 3-4 weeks old. The only reason it was diagnosed so early is because she was becoming septic (infection in blood) from her not being able to have all her urine come out. She has been seeing a pediatric urologist at Children's Hospital in Birmingham, AL. She has to have a renal ultrasound every 6 months and once a year have the ct scan (it's called a voiding cystogram. They haven't put my daughter to sleep with it, but have given her medicine to relax, which really doesn't work. with the ct scan, they have to put a catheter in her bladder, fill her bladder with dye, then take it out and wait for her to pee it all out to see how bad the reflux is. My daughter's is grade 4-5. It only goes to five. She has been on antibiotics since she was a month old every night to prevent a urinary tract infection. Her doctor says that she may be on the antibiotics until she is six and she may grow out of it, but that if she has a urinary tract infection or a kidney infection, she may have to have surgery. My son was diagnosed when he was 5 they did a voiding cystogram on him at Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta.They did not sedate him or anything and it was very traumatic for him, I guess it is worse on boys. But his was a stage 2 and they wanted to "watch" him because he was not having infections, just alot of urgency and not emptying his bladder. This got better until this year he is 11 and started wetting the bed, and having accidents on himself before he could get to the restroom. We went back to urologist in Montgomery, he ran a renal scan just to make sure the kidney's were working fine. Turns out his kidney's are fine he does have the reflux, but he said the accidents were caused by a hormone deficiency. He said his body does not produce enough of it to trigger his brain to let him know he has to go. He put him on some medication and said this is something he will grow out of. (hopefully)! Good Luck!
