I do not have twins, but I two children and they are born 2 years and 11 days apart, so since they are young, I do their parities together still to save time and money. They are the opposite sex, so eventually this will no longer work. For my son's first birthday, it was close friends and family at my mom's house. I had a pinata for the older kids and the babies just liked baby toys and playing with each other. Even with a small party at my mom's house, my son was overwhelmed and cried most of the party. On the opposite end of the spectrum, my friend threw her one year old a princess pool/bouncy castle party with lots of people. It was way more expensive then mine and way more crowded and the childs reaction was the same......crying most of the party. The truth is the first birthday is always more for the parents then the child. They wont remember it and the majority of the time from what I have seen react badly the majority of the time anyway. With a four year old and a two year old, I can already say that each year, birthdays seem to get more expensive. Do yourself a favor and save some money this year. The memories will still be the same.

How fun! At this age, the party is really for you- to show them off and have lots of photo ops. If there is too much activity, mostly from hyper little ones, they may become a bit overwhelmed/overstimulated and be fussier than you'd like. So I say do more family friends to your comfort level, and any special little friends they have.

As a side note, I have to tell you that my sisters are twins, and growing up I could not believe how people treated their birthday. Many people would give them one gift to share, or some would take apart a gift to split- like someone gave them a stationery set and wrapped the cards for one sister and the envelopes for the other. I kid you not. I really hope times have changed (this was 20 some years ago!) but it was frustrating to watch people treat them like one person, or just be cheap!!

I am not the mom to twin boys but our neighbors' twin boys turned one last year. They had the party at their house and invited their family friends. There were some kiddos but they just all played together. They did have a piñata for the kiddos to break. They had food catered by a friend and a cake from walmart. They also had smash cakes for the boys. The first birthday is really a celebration for you so do what you want. They will remember it from the pictures, videos, and stories you share with them.

I think it just depends on your personality...are you a party planner type or are you more low-key? Go with what you want. Like Kade said, it's about showing them off and having fun and congratulating yourself on a successful year! Personally, I like to go big! I have BIG parties will all our friends and family, little kids, big kids, grandmas and great grandmas! It's super fun and we love it, but it's not for everyone!

If you do decide to go big or invite other kids their age, there is really no need to do games or activities, just have lots of toys and food. I generally like to go off of a theme and icorporate it into the toys, goody bags, food, and cake.

Even though they won't remember, you'll have lots of pictures and you will remember. So do something that will make YOU happy and you can't go wrong!
