I was wondering how other Mom's of twins have done their birthday parties. My boys are almost 6 months. So I would like ideas for their 1st birthday party. As well as how you did their parties as they've gotten older. Thanks for your help.

What can I do next?

My identical twin boys are very close, and always have been. They are still happy to share their party with each other (they're 4 1/2 now). For their first we did something a little bigger, but that was so that I could get away with not continuing to invite everyone from both sides of the family as they get older. We did a luau theme. Cooked out, had a big cake for everyone, then small cakes, one for each of the boys to destroy.
Since then, it's mostly been cake and ice cream, maybe a cookout for just the closer family members.
The big thing is that you do what you want, because you're the one that'll do all the work.

Elizabeth H is on Mamasource and has boy twins who will be 4 in May. I think she is great in this area and she could help you.
I, personally, believe in having only as many friends over as they can handle. This is my rule of thumb: When my kids were 1, they had 1 friend, when 2, they had 2, when 3, 3, up to their 8th birthdays. Then for the 9th birthday, 8 friends, then, 7, 6, and so on until the 16th birthday, when they have 1 again - and that is when they go on their first date. And I believe that each child should feel special - not "the twins" but birthday boy "S" and birthday boy "T". This does not include family, who always support them at everything they do. And other times of year there can be other parties, of course.

For my twin daughters' first birthday I made three cakes, one for each of them and one for us. Each year I've had two smaller cakes for them and a large one for everyone else.

Their 1st b-day was simple with family only. We put them in diapers only, let them go to town on their individual cakes and then put them in the bathtub after they finished. The last two years we've had parties at our house - I like keeping things informal and social. For their 4th b-day (where does the time go?)they're old enough to help me plan it so I'll do what they want. I agree with the woman who said, do what you want to do because you're the one who has to plan and clean-up, especially for their 1st and 2nd b-days!

Most of all - have fun!

Well, I don't have twins but my two oldest children (one girl, one boy) have only one day between their birthdays. We have done a joint party every year and it has been great. When they were younger we had only one theme so it was easier to plan. Now, though, they each have their own theme and invite their own guests and of course they have always each had their own cake. The bonus is that I only have to throw one big party each year! I'm sure the day will come when they will want their own individual party and I'm open to that idea when the time comes. Hope this has helped.

A little about me: I am a SAHM. I have three beautiful children - Amber (8), Austin (6), and Aero (6 months). I've been married to my husband for ten years (well, almost!). We are a military family so we move around quite a bit. We've been in ABQ since July 2007.

I don't exactly have twins-but my son and my nephew are 2 days apart and we live in the same town! When it comes to throwing them a birthday party, they might as well be twins because everyone has to be at both parties!
For their birthdays (they are 2 now) we always do ONE party (makes it easier on the family) but we have 2 cakes. We have found that by buying 2 smaller cakes, the boys still have something that is JUST FOR THEM! So far the two we've had were successful!
Good luck! :)

I have pictures of my twin's 1st birthday party on my MySpace, but you have to be my friend to see them, so if you would like to check out what I did (for only $25 and it was AWESOME!) then send me a message letting me know.

I am a mother of twin 5 year old boys. The first birthday was just a small gathering of family and friends (Dora theme). But after that, they got to choose their theme. Up until their 4th birthday, they wanted the same theme (2nd birthday was Sesame Street, Third birthday was Thomas the Train at Freestone park). We always gave them their own birthday cake and their own presents. On their 4th birthday, one wanted a "Cars" party and the other wanted "Dinosaurs." So I made an invitation, on one side was a Cars invitation, and opening from the other side it was a Dinosaur invitation. I tried to have equal amount of games for each theme and all of the table decorations were a mix of both. It was twice as hard but they had a great time! Thank goodness for their 5th birthday party, they BOTH wanted Dinosaurs!

I have twin boys who just turned 1. I had a hard time with the b-day party ideas too. My boys are very into balls so we did a huge party with tons of balloons, and gift bags with all kinds of different balls that you can get at Party City (soccer, baseball, basketball, bouncy balls, etc.) We did cup cakes for the kiddos at the party and we got them at Costco (again they decorated them with plastic rings with different types of balls. My twins are very different - but because of their age I figure the more colorful the better. I think for the future - maybe when they are older of a lego theme, or a army/camo theme. Let me know what ideas you might have so that I can keep them in mind for my little guys. Good luck!

A little about me: Mommy of identicle twin boys, married to the only man to make me laugh so hard I pee my pants (my best friend).

In my husband's family, first birthdays are a BIG deal. You throw a big party, and invite adult friends (and their kids, if they have any).

We did this for our first, and will do the same for our 2nd. It worked out great, because a friend's kids unwrapped all our boy's gifts for him, (a 1 yo has no clue about opening presents yet, maybe tearing paper, but that can get slow and boring), and kept the adults entertained. We had food, and did individual cakes so our son could stick his fingers in his own cake without grossing everyone out.

Whatever you do: make it fun for you too.
Congratulations!

I'm a believer in keeping 1st birthdays very simple...family and a few friends. All we did for our first birthdays was have a bbq, hamburgers, hotdogs, etc. For the kids we make cupcakes. That way the birthday kid(s) get their own perfect "kid size" cake and don't mess up cake for everyone else. For our "twins" we have a boy and a girl so half the cupcakes had blue frosting and half had pink. We did something similar for their 2nd birthday because they are really too young to remember much...maybe a few more friends and themed plates. But their 3rd birthday we rented out Rollie Pollies. They had a blast! But it is only worthwhile if your kids have a lot of friends (they are allowed to invite up to 18 kids(your kids count as 2) with the rental fee and then you pay like $10/person after that). I liked that because no cleaning for me, someone else watched the kids while they played and they had a blast! What's nice about "twin" birthday parties is you get 2 parties for the price of one. Of course mine are only 3 and I'm sure when they get older they might want separate parties...but hopefully not! :-D

Hi A.,

We get a lot of twin birthday parties at Imagination Avenue (even had triplets). A common 1 year old party idea we see a lot is having 2 small cakes (often called "smash cakes") for the birthday kiddos and then a larger cake for the guests. We put them in high chairs and let them go to town (then the mess is not at your house). It is a great photo opportunity. :) We also see a lot of using "special" 1st birthday bibs. As they get older and start having their own likes/dislikes, we have seen parents do cupcakes with each favorite flavor &/or color(s). Some have done theme parties with 2 different themes so both kiddos have what they want.

If you are looking for a place to have the party, we can help (our website is www.imaginationavenue.us and you can see what we offer). We also count multiples as one kiddo (so you get one kid free) for birthday parties. If you are interested, mention mamasource and you will get $10.00 off party package A or $20.00 off party package B.

No matter what you decide, good luck and have fun!! :)
