I am 30 years old, my boyfriend and I have been trying to get pregnant for about 1 1/2 years now. I have an irregular period, which makes it harder for me to determine when I am ovulating. I basically don't get my period. My gyno told me I have PCOS (polycystic ovarian sydrome). He has been trying to help me get pregnant. First, he gave me clomid. I even had a laparascopy done because my ovaries were full of cysts, since I bearly get my period. As a result I had my period the first month after the surgery only. I have yet to get my period again. My gyno told me that women usually get pregnant within 3 months, but it has yet to happen to me. I am hoping that I would not have to result in doing the IVF, I cannot afford that. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

What can I do next?

HI M.,
I too have polycystice ovaries and was told that I would have too really try and get pregnent, well, what ended up happening is that when i got settled with my live in boyfriend, was no longer stressed about many things, lost some weight(weight can aggrivate the issue) not much, just about 10-20 lbs i got pregnent by accident. We were also active in the bedroom a lot when we moved in together. If you let go of the stress, that might help a liitle. you can get a monitering device that will give you a general idea if when you could be ovulating as well, but i've found that the more you stress over a problem, the less likely it wi;; be solved. hope this helps

I went through the same thing, the pny difference is that my husbands insurance covered fertility treatments..as a result I have 2 1/2 year old triplets~~~
My only suggestion to you is that tell the doc to give you the medicine to bring on your period, after you get your period, have sex every other day.....that is what one of my friends did ( it was alot of sex) but it worked!!!
Also check with your insurance plan....maybe they do cover something???

PCOS has so many treatable options, I have it among other issues. I tried to conceive for three years and now I am in fertility treatment. I am on my third round of IUI with injectable FSH and currently in my 2 week wait! One week to go! If you want to email me I wouldn't mind ____@____.com I have become quite the expert, not happy about it. Ignorance is bliss! I wish you the best. I really would like you to email me.

Hi M.,

I'm in the same situation as you, due to a bad case of Endometriosis. I'm 35 years old. Don't give up. Do you have insurance? Check with your insurance, they might pay for it or some type of treatment. Also check your with NJ laws. If i'm not mistaking NJ has a law that covers 2 or 3 cycles for IVF. My girlfriend lives there, i will e-mail her to see for sure. In my case, i live in CT and that law was just passed. As long as they accept your insurance something will be covered. Also, I do realize that you are having complication but IVF might not be necessary. You can probably do insemination. They are lots of different types of treatment/therapy that you can take. I found a great place in CT ( www.ctfertility.com ) they are wonderful. Good Luck!! And e-mail me privately if you like. ____@____.com J.

This topcic is so near and dear to me b/c I know of three people who were in your shoes. As soon as they started to eat right and exercise BAM they got preggo unexpectedly. I even know a woman who stopped treatment completely and got preggo the very next cycle. Whatever your choice is good luck and take good care of yourself.

I would see a fertility specialist anyway. You don't automatically go to IVF. I did clomid and an IUI to get pregnant. It's a lot less expensive and invasive than IVF. A lot of insurances cover IUI's too. Good Luck!

How long were you on Clomid for? Did your doc up your dosage at all?

Ask your doctor if you could try a balancing cream. I've had irregular periods all my life, but since I started using one it, it's helped alot. I am now regular to the day. If he says it's ok, let me know and I could send you some info.

I have the same thing, PCOS. Basically it's much harder to get pregnant, because you don't ovulate every month. I had an IVF and now have a 20 month old son as a result. If you have health insurance, most of them cover the costs. I would start by visiting a reproductive endocrinologist instead. Not sure where you live, but I had a great experience with RMA of NJ. The good news is, because of your pcos, you have most of your eggs still and if you go with IVF your chances of producing good eggs are much higher. Good luck, call your insurance to see how much they cover, and please go to a specialist...

Hi M.,
I know that trying to conceive can be very difficult and emotionally draining. I have a reproductive anomoly called uterus didelphus...I have 2 uteri! I am a freak of nature! LOL!

But on a lighter note, I can help make your conceiving experience with your husband be more fun again...because I know it can be very stressful. You should try to have fun with sex again and let nature take it's course. I sell sensual oils, lotions, creams, lingerie, and adult toys. You can even have a passion party in the privacy of your own home...give me a buzz! Good luck and I will pray to the fertility Goddess for you! :)

I agree with Lannie...schedule an appointment with a specialist (I can recommend an excellent one in Englewood Cliffs) and get some answers. You and your partner will both be tested and given the options the doctor feels will best increase your chances of a pregnancy. In all likelihood it will be IVF, and a good, caring doctor will work out a payment schedule if finances are an issue. Loans are also an option, but shop around carefully for a good rate. This is an emotionally loaded issue and in your eagerness to get things going you'll be tempted to go for the first loan you're offered even though it may not be in your best interests.

I walked in your shoes for nearly four years as my husband and I attempted to have a second child. In my case it wasn't to be due to age-related infertility. You have the advantage of youth on your side. Good luck to you and let us know how things turn out.

I'm so sorry, I know it's so frustrating! I went through 22 IUI's cause we couldn't afford IVF either and insurance would only cover the IUI's. I did get pregnant once via that procedure but it was ectopic. Finally, we risked it all on the IVF and it did work on the first try (we'll be paying the IVF off for the next 5 years, but it was worth every cent!) My suggestion would be for you to at least see a specialist if you haven't yet. Sometimes, even if you have a fantastic regular doc, there may be something they've missed or just don't know enough about. What else did they find on the laparascopy? Anything like endometriosis?

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Hello Sister,
Being that you're 30 years old, your fertility is probably beginning to decline. You're not too old to have children, of course, however nature does have it's way of taking its toll on us. Before going through all these medical procedures to have a baby, try some natural fertility boosters first. Here's a website with just a few, although some of them are pretty uncommon. http://www.babyhopes.com/articles/natural-fertility-boost...
Ask friends what works, it's a good chance they'll know or have heard of something. I've heard that eating salmon really increases your chances of getting pregnant. I don't remember which mineral/chemical in the fish helps exactly, but I do believe it works. I'm only 20, so i'm still fertile mertile i guess, haha..but my husband and I had eaten a lot of salmon before I got pregnant, and the first time we tried it happened. So if you like salmon, try it out. I know this method would be difficult because of having an irregular period, but if you can, try to concieve directly after your finished your period. Like the day after your last day of it. That works too, most of the time. The last piece of advice I could give you, when you try to concieve, make it as romantic and happy and enjoyable as you possibly can. I've heard that there's a better chance of concieving if both the woman and the man are in a great mood. Good Luck!

Hello, M... I am sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time. I had the same exact problem. For a year & 1/2 my OB kept telling me there was nothing wrong w/ me and that if I took the Clomid I would get pregnant. After the third time I asked about seeing a fertility specialist and he said I didn't need one. He finally sent me for tests and I was told I had PCOS but he would take care of it. I called a specialist anyway just to see and they would say and they told me to come in right away. They gave me some medications and tried to inseminate me. You can do that which is much cheaper than IVF. Unfortunately, it did not work for me. I had to have the IVF. Please check w/ your insurance company. Some companies may not cover everything but they might cover something, at least then it will be a little cheaper for you. If you do decide, I am not sure where you are located, but I had THE BEST fertility doctors that are located in Hasbrouck Heights. They were able to get me pregnant on the first try. And what they say about your system getting cleaned out afterwards is true.... I was pregnant, again, naturally 10 months later and I wasn't even trying!!!! Well, good luck to you with whatever you decide.. I know it's not an easy decision.

hi M.,
i am almost 34 and never get my period as well. so my gyno put me on provera to bleed. then clomid to ovulate...no luck. i made an appointment with a fertility specialist(reproductive endocrinologist). i went in and wind up i have pcos and now on metformin (drug used to treat pcos). i am also on clomid still but at least its being monitored with vaginal ultra sound and blood wor. I would recommend you see a specialist and not waste time with a gyno...they check your blood level to make sure you have the right blood levels for your medications. there is no reason at your age and especially sice you dont bleed ...you should be monitord by a specialist not a gyno. good luck

Is your gyno a reproductive endocrinologist? If not, you should find yourself an RE. When you do, ask them about Metformin with Clomid. I also have PCOS and I'm hypothyroid and finally got pregnant through IVF, but Metformin with Clomid at your age should help you get pregnant. Where do you live? I have seen several RE's and finally settled on St. Barnabas in NJ, but Cornell and NYU also have excellent reproductive services.
