Transition into Solid Table Foods.

My nephew is turning one in three weeks and is having a hard time going from very thin baby food to anything with substance. He will be fed something thicker (such as mashed banana) or actual food (like a small piece of bread), gag and then throw up everything he's eaten. My son loves food, so we had no trouble with the transition. Has anyone had any experience with this? Any suggestions?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of the advice! Sorry about the delay in the response. Between raising my toddler and vacations, things can get crazy around here. The good news is that my nephew is starting to adjust to eating the solid foods. He went to the doctor and they found out that he has low muscle tone, so that's probably what is delaying the transition. But things are slowly getting better. Thank you again for the advice!

Hi

Yes, we had a very tough time transitioning from baby food to solids. My son is 3 now and is still struggling. We recently found out that he has a medical reason why he does not eat (eosinophilic esophagitis)...but pediatrician kept telling us he'll eat don't worry about it. After poor weight gain and adverse behavior when presented with food we pushed to get answers. Do not mean to scare your family, but do not let this go....first thing they did for us was a video fluoroscopic barium study at CHOP to make sure he was not aspirating the food. Making an appointment with a GI doctor is a good start. We switched from Dupont to CHOP and are much happier with the care.

Good luck!

Hi Becky - My son had Acid Reflux and when the time came to transition to solids he gagged and vomited. We ended up having x rays and they found no medical reason other than he had a very strong gag reflex. We lived in DE at the time and they offered free Eating Therapy with a speech therapist at Christiana Hospital - paid for by the state. After a few sessions he did very well and was able to stop going to therapy.

Now my 2nd child is starting to gag and vomit as well. He also has AR. I am going to be mentioning it to my pediatrician at our next visit.

I would have your nephews parents talk to their pediatrician about this. They probably just need to check to make sure there is no medical reason for the gagging and then follow up with some simple therapies.

Good Luck.

Hi Becky. I had trouble with my daughter transitioning to regular food with my daughter. My husband and I would try to feed her regular foods in very small pieces. It took her a little time, but I had to keep trying and waiting until she was ready.

My advice is to give it a couple of weeks. For now, stick to the baby cereal (oatmeal) and jars of food/fruit. Give it a week, and then try to feed him regular foods...of course mushy things like mashed potatoes and mashed banana. I was told to introduce one thing at a time to make sure they didn't have an allergy to it. I'm sure your nephew will surprise his parents one day when they feed him again and he actually swallows the food.
Good Luck

i'm not sure how you are feeding him but maybe try to mix the "food" he's eating, such as mashed banana or other mashed stuff with baby cereal. it's easier for them to swallow i think. and the texture isn't so slimey then. oatmeal is a big hit with my infant.

if he has teeth, maybe give him a small piece of banana that isn't mashed and see how he likes that.

instead of a piece of bread, maybe try the toddler finger foods they have in the baby section, or cheerios or something like that.
