Training Pants or Straight to Undies?

I am looking to hear people's opinions on training pants vs. straight to undies. My almost 17 month old has starting asking to go on the potty --with some success. I'm unsure about if I want to just get her underwear and deal with accidents or if I should buy some cloth training pants. We use cloth diapers 95% of the time, so if I did buy her training pants, I would get her a cloth option. They make a variety of types, some for new beginners that have covers, and then other ones that are just like undies with extra material in the middle.

If she was 21 months, I'd go straight to undies, but since she is so young, I'm thinking she might need the transition with training pants, but really, I have no clue!

Go straight to underwear.

I worked in daycare for many years and the kids that did training pants took 2-3 times longer to potty train. I'm not kidding!

The kids that went straight to underwear trained a lot faster.

I agree, go straight to underwear. Training pants are just another way for their manufacturer to make money....

My children all went straight to undies and were trained in a week, so that's my vote.

I would opt for purchasing underwear, mainly because I think the cloth training pants might just confuse her since you mainly use cloth diapers, she may not be able to tell any difference. I'm purchasing "Dora" underwear for my 22 mos. old & we will be starting training. Either way, there will still be accidents, long term I think it will be less confusing going the underwear route. Good luck!

Someone once told me a year in pull ups or a few messes in underwear - your choice.

We went straigth to underwear and it took very little time (and admittedly a few messes) to get the hang of it. Good luck!

My vote is straight to undies. My son took so much longer to train and had accidents far longer than my daughter who went straight to undies. Congrats! You're on the road to no more diapers!!
