Toddler Only Wants Milk

Hello everyone!
My toddler had strep throat 3 weeks ago and ever since then is not eating well or not eating at all. All he wants is milk. Even at night. Every hour he calls for his milk. Whatever food I prepare he doesn't eat. I don't know wether I should cut off the milk or not. I am worried that he won't get any nutrients if I cut it off. He lost 5 pounds when he was sick, so I am not sure if he is just making up it by drinking milk. Any advice will be appreciated.

What can I do next?

Hi, A.:

Take the child to the Ped and see if he has overgrowth of yeast in his throat and needs some Nystatin.

Plus give him some friendly bacteria. The Antibiotic may have killed off his normal intestinal flora.

Hope this helps. Good luck. D.

Do you think he is afraid that it will still hurt his throat when he eats? Hmmmm...I would try puddings, jello, smoothies with yogurt and fruit, things like that to see if itgets him back in the groove of eating. Sorry, I'm not much help here...Good luck!

It's always hard when a child gets sick and and has lost their appetite. I wouldn't cut off their milk. I would go back to their normal eating schedule, and offer milk after each meal. It sounds like he just got into a new habit and you need to slowly get him back to his old one.

I don't know how old he is exactly but if he's at least 2 years old he can take half a vitamin complete to help supplement anything he's missing.

Breakfast - hand full of dry cereal, even a few peices, then offer a cup of milk. (or eggs & toast, etc)
Morning snack - hand full of gold fish crackers, then juice after.
Lunch - half PB&J, cup of applesauce, milk at the end.
Afternoon snack - fruit peices, followed by juice
Dinner - chicken nuggets with ketchup, few green beans, followed by milk at the end.

Don't offer milk whenever he asks as it's filling. The boy will be hungry and will eat. Try one day of withholding a drink until he eats a few bites and that alone will get him on track. Slowly up his amount of food with each meal and always offer his drink last until he eats something. Will he throw a fit? Yup, but he needs to learn a new habit, and since you're in charge, he has no choice but to do it your way.

Hi A.!
I am sure you have thought of this, but how about being a sneaky-pete and start putting vanilla Pediasure in his milk? Keep putting in more and more and lessen the amount of milk so it's not obvious with taste. Then at least you'll know he is getting more nutrients.
I also like Karen's advice (as always!) :)

You can also try Boost Kids Essentials its like milk but has nutrients to offset the irregular eating patterns it comes in vanilla and chocolate. I would also try to give soup broth and jello liquid (before you refrigerate it) in cherry for the soothing properties. If he wont take it willingingly take a syringe and squirt it into his mouth. Yes I would call the Pedicatrician and just update them on whats happening and see if they want to see him and give you suggestions as well.

Hi A. - This sounds like something you need to discuss with your Pediatrician and perhaps a registered dietician- nutritionist. I'm confident they can help. Perhaps you should also try some new approaches to enticing your toddler to eat something yummy and new ... Yogurt and fruit for example or pancakes with fruit (in small bites) or something new he hasn't had and allows him to play with the food - be creative. Stimulate his appetite?

Most important, don't hesitate to seek professional help.. there may be another health issue involved.

Best of Luck,

P.

I think 3 weeks is a long time. I'd call the pediatrician.

If he does not seem congested from the milk and is not getting sick to his stomach from it,give it to him. may be see if you can make him a smoothie shake with milk, yogurt and some fruit. my son has been sick and lost 1.5 pounds due to the stomach flu and nasal congestion this past week. He may be afraid to eat stuff because it hurt when his throat was sore. call the pediatricians office if you are at your wits end.you could do some pediasure since you are worried about nutrients lost.
