HI,
My 16-month old had an innie bellybutton until this week. She had a bad stomach bug and is teething and crying more than usual. Today I noticed her bellybutton is sticking out. I am afraid she has developed a hernia from straining with the virus and all the crying. Has anyone experienced this? Will her bellybutton every go back to an innie?
Please help! Has anyone experienced this? I am so nervous about it.
Thanks!
F.

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice/stories. I took her in today. It looks like she has a very small abdominal hernia right above the bellybutton. The walls of her abdomen ruptured a little probably with all the straining. She said it should heal on its own. If not, she may need surgery after 4-5. Hoping it will heal!!!!

My youngest had the same thing happen. It isn't that uncommon. We watched it for a change in color or warmth. Sometimes they go back in and sometimes they don't. Our doctor explained that if the muscles don't close up in that area at around five years old then they will go in a stitch the muscle together in that area.

Best to ask her doctor. My sister was the same at 10 months, had surgery, no scar, it faded away. They told us not to let her cry until surgery because that was what made it pop out, so try to have her see her doctor soon.

Welcome to mamapedia!!!

I'm sorry your daughter was sick and is going through this now!! It's soo hard when our babies are "right as rain" and happy!!

I would contact my pediatrician to see what course of action they want to take....does it push out further when she has a bowel movement? My girlfriend's son had something like this - it was a QUICK surgery and a small scar.

Good luck!

I always had an outie until one day I put my finger into a hole in my tummy and then found out I had a hernia. When my son was born with an outie his doctor said it should heal on its own, and it has. But, he was born with it and your daughter wasn't so I would call the nurse and talk to her or the pediatrician's office. If she is crying it can make it worse and every once in a while they do hurt. But, what you really don't want is for it to burst or rupture. Please call and make sure they don't need to see her right away! It should be fine, but its very bad if its not. Good luck and we'll be thinking of you.

It may go back in-back in the olden times, a quarter was taped over the navel-and you did not let the baby cry at all.
