Toddler Can't Eat B/c of Sore Throat

My 20 month old has had a sore throat all weekend and yesterday he couldn't even eat because it was hurting so bad. We went to the doctor and he tested negative for strep and the flu but they said his throat was red (and whitish in areas) and when I looked in his mouth, there are sores on the roof of his mouth back where his throat starts. My son would get so excited when he saw food yesterday and then take a huge bite and start crying b/c it hurt so bad. He ended up spitting everything out and towards the end of the day wouldn't even try to eat b/c he knew it'd hurt. It broke my heart! Please any remedies as to how to make him feel better?? Any foods easy on the throat to eat? Thanks :(

What can I do next?

Has it gotten worse since you left the dr? It may be time to go back.
When my kids had sore throuat last week, we did a lot of popsicles, juice pops, sherbet, and pedialyte pops. I also used chloraseptic spray. They were resistant to it at 1st, but when they realized it helped they would come over with mouths open when they needed it. Don't foget VICKS on the feet!

My daugher had this same issue just recently, although she is 11. Chloraspetic spray works wonders. I got the Walgreens generic version. I would also try hot or warm cocoa. My daugher liked ice too, though it didn't give her any calories. We used ibupfrophen to ease pain and swelling, but it just had to run it's course for a few days.

Did they do a culture to test for strep? My daughter has tested negative for the rapid strep test in the doctor's office before but when the culture came back a couple days later it was positive.

I would just give him cold, soft food. Popsicles, jello, pudding, yogurt. Will he eat any soup?

I'm not sure you can successfully do this with a toddler but alternating hot and cold might help his throat feel better. That seemed to help me this past winter when I had a really bad sore throat. When they are that little it's more like warm and cold. So the warm things could be soup, broth, decaf tea, hot cocoa. If that won't work, just the cold things Denise P mentioned should help soothe his throat.

What did his Doctor say to do? Why are there sores in his mouth? I and my kids have had sore throats, but we did not have white patches in our mouths/throats.
I would wonder... IF he has just a normal sore throat or not?
Did you tell the Pediatrician about the white Patches? If not, tell him/her.

Sometimes, white patches in the mouth, can be Thrush or other things.

Soft foods and liquids will be your best bet. Jello, yogurt, mash potatoes, oatmeal, soup, broth, etc. Stay away from acidic things (like orange juice) as they might burn the sore areas.

My five year old has the coxsackie (hand foot and mouth) virus for 2nd time. Fevers and sores in throat. Cant eat anything. Room temperature thin oatmeal and pudding only. Its heartbreaking but only lasts a few days. Mainly focusing on room temp water. Cold things hurt.

When my kids are sick and will not eat, my dotor tells us not to worry. He says that it is very important to drink, but you can go a long time without eating. Make sure he drinks enough so he does not get dehydrated.

my daughter had a sore throat the other week (with a blister on the back, ouch!). We gave her anything soft, mostly yogurt.
