Toddler Acid Reflux?

For the past 3 nights before bedtime, I've noticed my 3 yr. old son cough, clear his throat, burp and hack up gunk from his throat. He drinks almond milk because we've noticed this happen in the past after drinking cow's milk so we made the switch. I noticed these symptoms during the day today as well. I'm not sure if he ate something that is causing this? He also has asthma and allergies but now I'm wondering if this might be acid reflux and if it is contributing to his asthma. Is there anything we can give him to help with these symptoms, any suggestions/experience with this? Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your help! I took my son into our ped clinic yesterday after he developed a fever. It looks like it was the beginning of a virus. His fever has since improved but he still has the same gagging, chocking cough. He is definitely getting something up from out of his lungs. Interesting note though, we gave him his normal almond milk tonight and he coughed so hard for a 1/2 hour before bedtime, he couldn't sleep, then he coughed so hard he threw up all the milk. Just like his old cow's milk days. Then we gave him only water, no more milk! after that experience. Well guess what, No milk, NO cough. Just water and not one single cough and he finally fell asleep. Now I wonder if he is developing an intolerance to all types of milk? Or maybe milk is just too irritating when he has a cold. I don't know, but the observations were pretty startling.

I took him to see a Naturopathic doctor this week coincidentally and we had him tested for food allergies, so I am anxious to find out the results.

I wanted to reiterate what another person said about nutrition making a world of difference.

I have been doctoring with alternative medicine practictioners since Aug 2008. Since Oct 2009 I've been seeing a Naturopathic Doctor; wish I would have started with him in the first place. I also suffer(ed) from asthma and allergies. Since I've radically changed how I eat and found out what foods I am allergic or sensitive to, I have gone off all pharma meds for my asthma and my allergies are nonexistent (I was on 12 prescription drugs for various ailments; I have one left to get rid of).

You can get rid of symptoms and diseases, and you can do it without having to take pharma drugs for life. The ND I see holds a PhD in molecular biology, which means he gets down and looks at everything from the cell level up. Between my visit to see him in April 2010 and again on June 16, 2010, I became sick with illness after illness...one would end and another would start. Very frustrating and perplexing, since I was doing everything I was supposed to be doing and taking all my supplements.

I went in and had labs taken by my allopathic doctor (I try to have as many tests and lab tests done by my allopathic doctor as possible, because health insurance pays for them. Health insurance doesn't pay for the naturopathic doctor visits or tests). My ND took those and compared them with the labs he'd been taking since Oct 2009 (totally different types of tests that can only be done through a Naturopathic Doctor), and the ones I had taken on June 16.

We finally discovered WHY: it seems my body has a low-grade viral infection that is lurking in the background, and whenever something stressful comes along, or something triggers it, the virus comes out to play and makes me extremely sick. It pushes up my blood pressure and makes me extremely tired (it dehydrate me, changes my glycogen to sugar for energy, and sucks the protein out of my muscle mass, as well as making my white blood cell count go drastically low, among others). Who knew that a virus could do so much damage?

We're not sure when or how or where I contacted the little bugger, but we are pretty sure that I acquired it at some point in my childhood (had asthma, but wasn't medicated for it; had allergies; had warts and athlete's foot all the time; had yeast infections nonstop when I started having my period; always had chronic bronchitis; suffered from sinunitis and rhinitis my entire life).

You might want to think about taking him to a Naturopathic Doctor and having the ND run a few tests. Believe me, if you get a really good one, he or she will be worth their weight in gold. Until I became really, really sick myself, I always believed allopathic medicine, which says alternative medicine is quakery. Hah. Well, if that is so, then I want the quakery medicine, because I feel the best I've ever felt in my entire life, and I'm getting my life and health back, and it doesn't include pharma drugs.

This is more likely gunk that he's coughing up from his lungs. One thing that asthma does is increase secretions. I would talk with his doctor before doing anything.

Both my grandson and I have acid reflux. His started when he was a baby. It is liquid and not gunk that comes up into the throat. Coughing does not usually produce anything. The reflux can cause one to spit up or vomit a small amount. Depends on one's gag reflex.

The gunk could also be something that has drained from his sinuses. When it hits his throat he coughs, burps and is able to spit it out. Allergies often cause post nasal drip which can be thick.

My granddaughter has asthma and allergies and she frequently coughs and brings thick mucous into her mouth. She then swallows it. Not good.

Our first son had reflux as a baby. It seemed to resolve itself around 12 months, but our dr warned that it could rear its ugly head several times throughout the next few years. Apparently it is pretty common to come back.

I can't drink whole milk, it leaves a nasty lump in my throat that I eventually have to hack up. Sorry, that sounds nasty, but just wanted to put it out there that maybe that could be part of it.

Acid reflux can cause and agravate asthma when stomach contents are asperated into the lungs. This can be dangerous, so see your doctor about this issue soon.

I have reflux, and recently asperated acid and ended up in the hospital with asperation pnemonia, and you do not want to mess around with it. One food item that causes me issues is nuts! I would consult your doctor before you make more food changes.

Yes I would definitely check with your son's doctor. However, if you are looking for something other then medications, nutrition could be your answer. We use a nutrition product that has helped others with all these issues. In fact my allergies are no longer an issue, my friends nephew is off his nebulizer, my neighbor's acid reflux went away and there are thousands more stories. I suppose I didn't answer your exact question but I feel it is important to share what I know if it will help someone else :)
Blessings,
L.

I would suggest just going to your pediatrician and getting him checked to see. What you describe sure sounds like it. Rather than just trying some home base cures and diet changes, I would also seek medical advice. Many times some of the diet stuff and natural remidies can help relieve some of the big symtoms that you are describing, but then many times the silent reflux will still be there causing damage.
