To Wax or Not to Wax That Is the Question?

The hair on my arms is pretty dark and abundant. Sometimes it lightens with the sun during the summer. Does anyone here bleach, wax, or shave their arms? I wax my eyebrows and I know that's pretty painful so I am wondering what's the best route with my arms?

What can I do next?

I have waxed and shaved. I haven't done the whole laser thing. When you shave you have to keep up with it. I shave everyother day. Waxing gives you more freedom. The first few times with waxing is a bit painful but you do get used to it. I would find a good salon or spa. Don't be afarid to ask them questions about the pain they know what to do about it also don't be afarid to ask questoin about their procuder for clean up between clients. I guess I prefer waxing. Can get a little spending though

I know my boss either shaved or waxed her arms and wasn't great at keeping it up and it looked horrible when it grew back in.

Hi C.--I feel your pain! I would love to be okay with my own hair situation and have a Tyra Banks "So What" moment, but I am NOT! I wax my arms--I have used both traditional waxes as well as the product NADS. I like the NADS because it is natural, and quickly can remove large quantities of hair from a large area. It doesn't leave the skin completely hairless like traditional wax (if you have stubborn hairs like mine), but it isn't as painful, and you can wipe off any excess with a warm washcloth. Whatever the NADS leaves behind, I use an epilator to pick up any straglers. I have to do this process frequently, and it is the most affordable and most tolerable. It can cause ingrown hairs, which can be really uncomfortable and unsightly, but there is a product called Tend Skin that eliminates ingrowns really well. It smells a little funky, but works well. Good luck--until I can afford laser treatment, this is what I've had to resort to! Also--this removal does not make hair grow in darker--if anything, I've actually developed places where the hair no longer grows.

If you're up to the maintenance, get it waxed. It will come back thinner and possibly after time you may not really need to do it so often. Before doing anything I would talk to someone who does that and ask for their opinion. I have a really awesome women who my sister-in-law referred me to. Her name is Anastasia and she works at the WAVE salon. The number is ###-###-####.

Good luck!

I would wax. I wax my eyebrows as well and believe the eye area is much more sensitive than one's arms. Waxing is quick, the results last for a decent amount of time and you don't get the stubble you would get were you to shave. Have you ever felt a stubbly arm? It's not hot. :) With bleaching, you are adding extra chemicals to your skin. Have you noticed how bleached hair feels much rougher? Plus, what if the dye didn't take correctly and you ended up with orange arms? Good luck to you!
p.s. I just read the one about your hair growing back darker and thicker if you wax. THAT IS NOT TRUE. Go to straightdope.com to check it out.

I have been an Esthetician for 9 years and have many clients that wax their arms. I have waxed and had my arms lasered as well. If your skin is light and hair is dark then laser hair removal is the best option. It is expensive but does permanently reduce or elliminate the hair. It is not that painful, but if you think getting your eyebrows waxed is painful then you probably have a very low tolerance for pain. The more you do it, the less it hurts.
All of my waxing clients are very pleased with the results. They need to come about every 4 weeks and the hair does tend to thin out and lighten up the more you do it. It grows in soft, because it is a new hair growing in, not like shaving where the hair is cut. With laser hair removal you need about 6 treatments every 6 weeks or so. I would only go to a place where there is a doctor on sight, you can also ask what they do to help with the pain.
I work at the Sanctuary in Eden Prairie if you have any further questions. ###-###-####.
DO NOT shave the hair or use a depilatory cream(Nair).

Not to be mean to the woman who said the thing about so what i am beautiful but i do not feel beautiful with hair on my arms. i have dark hair and my arm hair is dark too. i have hated it since i was a little girl. so i do not shave it, bad idea and i don't wax. The best thing that I have tried and I do this every week is Nair it. I have tried bleaching and it does work but my arms are just hairy and blonde then. so anyway i go and buy the nair with aloe for sensitive skin. Make sure you get that one. also shake the bottle before each use. sometimes the contents settle and when i forget to shake it i end up with a bit of redness. but if you do what i just suggested you will end up with hairless, smooth arms.

I have waxed my arms, but I usually epilady. The new epiladies are not as painful as the old ones. When I first did it, I pulled the skin tight on my arm, and it honestly didn't hurt at all. A little less than my legs, even. But still, the more often I do it, the less I feel it.
The only thing, though, is that afterward, for almost a whole day I have large red bumps on my arms. So I just wear long sleeves. They go away and I forget all about them in no time, though.
It's definitely more comfortable than waxing brows, though. I think the skin is less sensitive on your arms, especially if you do it fast.

every time you wax or pull the hairs on like your lips area legs, ect. you are making the hair come out darker and thicker.
maybe the bleach would be better. i am 45 and i bleached my mustach for a long time and i was told by my costmatoligist not to pull those hairs. well i felt lazy and did got tired of bleaching, so i pulled those few hairs and they are more course and thick like a guys. bleaching is the way or leave them alone. black hair on your arms is not as bad as the legs.

I would wax them. I have waxed my bikini area and it is painful but it does come back lighter and less hair. You could also look into laser which does a similiar thing but is more painful. My sister did it and it lasts a lot longer than waxing. It is a little more painful though. Call around to a few places and ask questions; Im not sure how painful it would be on your arms.
