TMI, But I Need a Little Help

Hi moms - I know this is going to be TMI but since you are the best resource, I have to ask. Ever since having my baby I've periodically gotten bouts of hemorroids, but to this point I've been able to relieve them with the Tucks pads and they've gotten better and gone away. This last bout I've had comes and goes, I think that it is getting better and going to the bathroom gets easier and doesn't hurt. Then all of a sudden they are back with avengance. I've had two days where there is blood in my stool. I just can't seem to get them soothed for long enough that they heal completely. I picked up some Dulcolax, and I am chugging water. But if you all have any suggestions I would be in great appreciation.

White Oak Bark, both internally and made into a paste to put directly on them should dry them up overnight.

You have gotten a lot of info, and I haven't read all of them. I have had horrible ones after the birth of each child (#3 9mos. ago)...and I have tried tons of different things. This time around I did stz baths for about a week twice a day (it's difficult with kids) and i would actually sit on the herb packet, in combination with an ointment call Bummer 'rhoid ointment. Both od these things I got at Cascade Healthcare (they sell birthkits and all sorts of herbs, etc) and my hemmrhoids are completely gone. Don't listen to those that say they will never go away!! (mine were so bad I literally felt like I was walking around them). I expect them to come again with my next baby (genetics maybe?) but I am happy I have found a way to heal them. Both the Hemm Sitz Bath and ointment are really inexpensive...but do them diligently and you'll feel better. Mine were completely healed in two weeks.
I think the website is www.1cascade.com

First of all, its almost never TMI on this site unless it X rated... this is medical stuff so completely fine by me and Im sure every other mother out there lol, I think most of us have been there and share your pain.. sorry to hear that you're uncomfortable :(
I recommend the suppositories to shrink them inside, fibre, good ole fibre, and plenty of water. But first, i recommend you go see your doctor because if your child is already a year old its time to revisit this with your doctor if you haven't already, there may be something else wrong.

Go to Apothecary Tinctura on 6th Ave. They have the most wonderful products available for help with this. I had them bad with my 1st and now I'm having my 2nd and they've been more manageable with their help. Good luck. The alternatives aren't fun.

Hey T., Sorry you are having to deal with this, I had them just after my daughter was born, not to the extent you are dealing with but still not fun! What I found worked best to heal them was swabbing the area with witch hazel on a cotton pad multiple times a day and then having a warm sitz bath. You can get witch hazel from most grocery stores and the sitz bath I have is motherlove www.motherlove.com it is a Colorado company. I hope that helps, good luck!!

Make sure your diet has lots of whole grains, fiber, fruits and vegetables. Maybe even lower your dairy intake for a few days and see if that helps. Good luck and feel better soon.

I've heard that if you have blood in your stool, you should see the doctor. You may want to do that.
I had the same issue after each of my kids, including the bloody stool occasioally. I didn't see the doctor (I'm really stubborn). I ended up ok. It took a while, though, and hurt a lot. I just ate lots of fiber and used the dulcolax. And I would "excersise" the area (kind of like kegels, I guess, tightening the area then releasing). Don't know how but it seemed to help. Don't know if that'll work for you.

I used to have hemorrhoids also after having my kids. Drinking Aloe should help. Aloe is a natural healing agent. It's soothing and helps things move through your system. I'm a Personal Wellness Coach. Here's my website to check out some aloe www.shopherbalife.com/O.

I experienced this after having my second son and the only thing that got rid of them completely were the suppositories. It's not fun, but it hits them internally. Using the Tucks pads is great if you have discomfort externally, but they do nothing really to shrink them. Drink lots of water and make sure you're getting plenty of fiber! Good luck!!

No, its not TMI. It is a serious problem and I know I have to deal with them too. I had one burst during my second pregnancy. I was so scarred. They don't just go away, they have to be removed. I would definately do see a doctor about them.

Hi T.,
After the birth of my twins my "little problem" was so bad I required surgery. Hopefully, it won't come to that with you. I still have occasional bouts when I'm not careful (one of the not-so-joyous side effects of motherhood) but manage to get healthier doing the following:
soaking in a hot bath for 20 minutes every night
using Metamucil daily
eating a high-fiber diet
and trying to lay down horizontally (flat) as much as possible at night and during the day after exerting myself (I have a 5-year old and twin 3-year olds but I do manage to find a few minutes here and there). Finally, hemorroid suppositories, while no fun, also help. If this doesn't work and you're still bleeding, by all means see a doctor. Good luck!

FIBER, FIBER, FIBER!!!!! You must take fiber. It could lead to all kinds of other internal problems. The pain when trying to go is a symptom of that. Please take care of yourself and take FIBER. There are all kinds out there and you may find one that is right for you. I like the Fiber Choice tablets fruit flavor. I chew 2-3 every night and LOTS of water. I now have a bowel movement ever day. The way it is supposed to be! The icky side effect of hemerroids is nonexistent. Yeah! But you must take some form of fiber EVERYDAY!

I don't have personal experience, but I just happen to be reading this book that talked about it. It's called The Post-pregnancy Handbok by Sylvia Brown. I'll summarize what it says:
-If it's external (you can feel the vein), you can manually reinsert it.
- An anal fissure can accompany hemorrhoids (but is not the same thing)
- To reduce swelling, take anti-infammatories (only prescription creams seem to work), sitz baths 3x a day, prevent constipation (which includes cutting back on dairy and animal protein).
- The book also has a whole list of homeopathy & herbal remedies.
- An exercise that helps is to lie down on your stomach for 15 minutes and rhythmically squeeze the buttocks and release.
- If they still don't disappear, consider surgical removal.

Hi. My aunt has a problem with hemorrhoids. I heard her say once that drinking something either really cold or really warm FIRST thing in the morning and before you go to bed at night helps to get everything moving inside, and really helps make the process easier, which keeps the hemorrhoids at bay. Good luck! That's no fun. Also, Miralax works really well, and is nice because your body doesn't absorb it at all, so if your breast feeding, your baby won't get it.

I had the same problem for the last 5 months, no joke. I could never get them to go away and they were terribly painful and would never heal. I think the biggest problem is that I wouldn't go to the bathroom because I couldn't stand the pain or I was too busy so when my body told me I HAD to go, it made the problem worse because by then the stools were so bulky and they came out really fast (sorry for the graphic...). I tried everything that everyone has already suggested (minus surgery) but last week I started eating Activia (I got a 24 pack at Costco for a pretty good price) and on top of that I made it part of my routine to go to the bathroom at the same time every day - even if I didn't feel the urge, I would grab something to read and sit there until I went. I haven't had pain or blood in my stools now for a week and a half. I only ate the Activia for a week and I'm still symptom free. The only problem I encountered was that I had stomach cramps for the first 2 days of adding Activia to my daily diet. I don't know if it was a combination of the two that worked, or if it was just making sure I went to the bathroom every day at the same time, but one or both of them solved my problem! I really hope you find something that helps you too!

I have had the same problem since I had my third and last child 16 months ago. After about 6 months they got better, but every now and then I find that they flare up. I noticed that when I increase my fiber and salad intake, its A LOT easier to go to the bathroom. I still have flare ups occasionally, but changing my diet has certainly helped. Good luck- I can totally relate! :)

I don't know if this will help, but I got the stomach flu right before my second was born. After that my hemorroids were so bad. I couldn't even sit. I finally noticed that every morning after I ate cereal I had to go and it hurt! I pinpointed it to the milk and stopped eating anything with dairy in it. They were gone within 2 weeks! You can also try probiotics. You can get them at the health food store. They restore the natural bacteria that helps digest certain foods and can help so that you have less irritation going through your system. Good luck!

After reading this, I am wondering if I have the same issue. I was never "diagnosed" with hemorrhoids, I was told it was anal fissures, but it caused the blood, and it was very difficult and painful to go to the bathroom. My husband suggested the yogurt, but I wasn't consistent with it until I switched to Activia. It actually seems to be helping. Right now I have some external itching that Tucks seems to help with, and I can't help but think that was because the store was out of Activia and I went a week without it. If you do try the yogurt, go for Activia, as that is the purpose of the product. Good luck, and let me know if you find any better solutions!

Carrying my boys gave me the same problem and I was in the doctors office every 3-6 months. How embarrassing!!! I just happened to have a good friend who was the manager of Good Earth here and she told me that drinking 4-8 oz of Aloe Vera juice and taking a couple of Cayenne Pepper pills each day for a week or two would take care of them. I did it and no more problems. Cayenne Pepper is good for the circulation and your problem is just extended blood vessels. Aloe Vera juice is good for the digestive tract. When you go to get Aloe Vera juice, go to a health food store. I realize the walmart sells it also but it is mainly water. I know they are really, really painful and I hope this helps.

I had this about 2 mos ago, and finally went to a Gastroentologist. Turned out that mine was internal. He had me on a specific diet and had to track everything down I ate for a week. He prescribed a suppository as well. Not the funnest but it worked. A call to a Dr never hurts or costs anything either. That's what I did. Mine started about 5 mos after having my baby and she is 7 mos now. I first called my GYN about something else then somehow it led to making a call to the Gastroentologist.

Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

Check out Mountain Streams Medical. They have offices in Denver and Colorado Springs. The treatment they do will make the hemorrhoids go away in one or two visits. It's covered by most insurance and was easy.

You've gotten lots of good info. I just wanted to add that instead of buying expensive Tucks, just buy Witch Hazel (which is basically all Tucks are soaked in) and use a cotton pad for the same relief at a much lower cost. Good luck! I think, short of surgery (I've also been hearing about non-surgical treatments involving far-infrared light that sound promising), all you can do is manage them and keep them comfortable with many of the wonderful suggestions you've received.

I feel your pain sister...I had the exact same thing going on for almost two years after my son was born. Finally, I gave in an just went to see my doctor. No more hemorroids now...whew! Sometimes they just won't heal without help. Plenty of water and fiber will help, but if it hurts to go to the bathroom from the hemorroids (and not because of hard stools), I would just go talk to your doctor. It's not worth the suffering.

I've had the same problems ever since I had my little boy, and the thing that I have found that has helped the most is drinking a fiber supplement once a day. they were getting worse and worse for months until I finally started doing this and now they are almost gone and It no longer hurts or bleeds. the Fiber Supplement I drink is called FiberWise and it has 12 grams of fiber per serving and actually tastes good!

Obviously this is a much more common problem than we let on! Mine got bad enough to go to the dr twice, then I gave up until the blood got bad enough. Finally, a new dr suggested a colonoscopy and found a polyp. Once removed, it was found to be non cancerous and the follow up showed nothing. Whew! BUT, the bleeding stopped after that polyp was removed. MANY other drs and friends had told me to ignore it or eat more fiber. The fiber helps, the yogurt helps, fresh fruits and veggies help, but ask your dr about the bleeding. I'm only 39 and colonoscopies are not standard until 40.
