Teething?? - Grand Prairie,TX

My daughter is acting very strange. She had her 4 month shots on Monday and she is still very fussy and VERY VERY sleepy!! She's been sucking on her bottom lip, or massaging her bottom gum with her lip (it's hard to tell what she's doing) and she's been drooling a lot. Could this all be because she's teething, or should I be concerned with the shots?

What can I do next?

I talked to the nurse. She agrees that she's probably teething and that I should not be worried. Thanks for the help!

Depending on the type of shots, she could be fussy and feverish off and on for 10 days or so. Both my kids sleep a lot when they have fevers, too. Sometimes babies drool more because they have a sore throat. Not sure if that would have anything to do with the shots though. I'd call the doctor's office and find out if this is a normal reaction to the shots.

I totally agree with Kelly. Call your doc's advice nurse. It may be teething but never assume.

My 4 mo. old son is doing the exact same thing. I've been giving him tylenol when he acts like something's hurting and it seems to help. I also have been holding cold teething rings for him when sucking/massaging his lip.

I have no clue! Have you looked at the symptom list or called the doctor?

In my experience babies do alot of strange things at different times. They teeth or don't have an appetite for a week and so on. Whenever mine would get their shots and did these weird things I would always think it was because of the shots. Scariest for me was the high fevers. I wish I can help more and I hope she is ok. I would call the doctor if I was worried or call a nurses hotline, Good Luck!

I have a 7 month old son that has been drooling since he was 3 1/2 months old and doing exactly everything your daughter is doing. Everyone has told me for the past 3 1/2 months that he is about to get teeth any day, as of today he still does not have one and the symptoms continue, he has even sucked on his bottom lip so much that below the lip line looks chapped. Some days are better than others and when he is having a really rough day I give him some infant Tylenol and it helps. From what I have read and discussed with others, a babys gums can really bother them long before the teeth break through. I personally would not be concerned that the shots are the problem, but call your doctor and hopefully he/she will ease your mind.

For me, as long as my kids didn't have a fever I normally just wrote it off. Teething can last for months, so even if she's drooling and massaging her bottom gum she may be doing this for awhile before you actually see teeth. My middle son drooled forever (it seemed) and he didn't get his first teeth until 14 months. :)

You know your child and if you feel more comfortable talking to someone, I would suggest calling her Doctor and talking to the Nurse (on call). They can sometimes suggest if you should bring your child in to see the Doctor. Just a thought!

My daughter starting teething at 4 months, got her first tooth at 4 1/2 months..,so it is definitely not too early. I personally would still call my pedi about the symptoms, just to make sure. If you can see in her mouth, sometimes you can see the teeth coming in before they actually get there...or even feel the little nubs on the gums too....my baby did drool for weeks before getting her first tooth though. This of course does not mean its not bothering her. I use the hylands teething tablets for my baby girl and it really calms her down without having to give anything else.

Best of luck! Teething is tough!

My 5 month old starting teething last month and the symptoms yours has sounds a lot like what she was doing. I wouldn't be too worried about the shots, she's probably just teething. I bought some teething tablets at Wal-mart that seem to help A LOT. They disolve real fast when you put them under their tounge. You might try them. Hope this helps!
