Teething - Phoenix, AZ

I have a six month old who I believe has started teething. When I put my finger on the bottom gum, it feels rough. I think it has started to break through the gum, but not sure. I was wondering how long it takes for each tooth to go through this painful process or shall I say, "how many days will he be in pain per tooth?". He has been waking up several times through out the night in the past few days and I am wondering if this is the reason. He doesn't neccesarily cry but gets up and stays up for a while. What has your experiences been with this process and are there any secrets to soothing this pain? Are there any indications? I have orajel and put a tiny bit on his gum last night to see if that helped and it seemed to get him to stop crying. Any ideas, indications or suggestions from anybody? Thanks sooo much.

What can I do next?

Some teeth are slow coming in, some are faster. I never had any luck with Orajel, but they have a teething ring you can buy anywhere that you put in the freezer. Also a thin bumpy rubber pretzel looking thingy that they can chew on. A Popcicle is good too, helps distract them from the pain. Sometimes they might even run a fever with the teething, so you might need some baby Tylenol. Be sure to get a nap when you can, 'cause you're gonna need it.

Hello,
As a dentist and a mom of boys ages 4 and 5, I can say that I agree with most of the replies you have received. What worked best for me was the Motrin / Hylands combination.

Also, during the day, I would wrap a piece of ice in a clean wash cloth and then rubberband the wash cloth so the ice couldn't fall out and then hand it to my son to chew on. As the ice melted, the wash cloth would absorb the water. It seemed to keep him busy and soothe him at the same time.

Hi M.,

Once the teeth break the gum line the pain will stop. This was one of the hardest things my son went through. He use to run a fever and be in so much pain. I would get baby Tylenol and the stuff that numbs the gums and that seemed to work.

Everyone is different as to how long it will take to get the tooth to break the gum.

Hope this helps a little.

All the best.

Hi M.,

I feel your pain. Some teeth take longer than others to break thru. I've done the orajel, teething rings, wet frozen washcloths, infant Tylenol/Mortin, and Hyland teething tablets. The only two things that work for us are the Mortin/Teething tablets. You can find the teething tablets anywhere, the best pkg I found was at Walmart by the vitamins they have a bigger bottle for about a $1 more. Also my niece got a script from ped for some teething stuff, I can't remember the name though, sure ped would know what it is. Good Luck!
