Teacher Gifts - Canton,MI

I have reviewed the responses to an earlier inquiry on what to get teachers for the holiday, but I need to take it one step further. My daughters attend the same school (one in preschool and one in a Toddler room) and they have a combined total of 8 FULL TIME teachers. We also see the Admin at daily drop off and there is the early morning before school teacher. So, I basically have 10 teacher gifts to buy. I too have purchased too many candles and coffee mugs along the way. I really like the gift card idea, but what dollar amount do you give? I feel like a dinner gift certificate should be at least $20 to make it worth it to them, but that would be $160 just for the main teachers. I can do $10 to Panera or Blockbuster, but does that seem so, so cheap? These are the people that are educating our children and caring for the 40 hours a week. I also had the idea of getting a Christmassy looking pot and buying a small X-Mas tree to plant in each holder. The teachers could plant the tree in the spring and re-use the pot the following year for decoration? I don't know hat this would cost either?

Your thoughts on the dollar value of a gift card would be appreciated.

I also thought about asking the school if our family could supply lunch on day to the teachers from Subway or Pot Belly. Not sure if the school would be okay with this or if the teachers would be ok with this as their gift?

What can I do next?

I have idea for you that is useful and very thoughtful that your children can help you with. I am doing this for our bible study group along with our pastor and his wife.

Cinnamon Hot Chocolate Mix in a any kind of mug you wish. You can then write the teachers names/administration names with a paint pen.

Here is the recipe out of the Taste of Home Simple & Delicious NOV/DEC 2009 issue. Originally submitted by Linda Nilsen of Anoka, MN.
1. Mix together 1 3/4 C. nonfat dry milk powder, 1 C. powdered sugar, 1/2 C. powdered nondairy creamer, 1/2 C. baking cocoa and 1/2 t. ground cinnamon.

2. Top with 1 C. miniature marshmallows. (put these into a snack or sandwich bag to keep fresh longer)

3. Wrap in gift bags tie with a ribbon (place the card with step 4 written tie with ribbon as well). Place in mug of choice or in a quart size jar with a piece of fabric between lid and ring with the recipe tied with ribbon.

4. To make hot chocolate, stir about 3 Tbsp. hot chocolate mix into 3/4 C. hot milk or water.

Hope this gives an alternative to buying so many gifts this year.
***You can buy some of the ingredients at the Dollar Tree including the mugs***

As for Teacher gifts with so many to buy for 10.00 would not be to cheap. Many know with todays tough times the fact that you even thought of them would be enough. 10.00 owuld be enough to buy a nice lunch on a very busy day look at it that way. Another thing if you are lucky enough to have bussing where you live don't forget your children's bus drivers. These are people that many forget about but they are there rain or shine, cold or hot getting our children to and from school safely everyday.

I think $10 is totally fine. I know that sometimes at Costco, you can get gift certificates in a package-$100 worth of GC's for $80. I did that last year. I got Starbucks cards for the teachers. Also, if you are in the Detroit area, on the Magic 105.1 website, they have a section called "Steals and Deals" where you can get gift cards for 1/2 off or less. I've also done that for gifts. It's hit or miss, but you might find something.

Hi M.,

I do a $10 gift card to Paneras for all of my children's teachers and aides. Then for the main classroom teacher I include a jar of jelly. Marshall's has a great selection. I work at a school and the teachers LOVE gift cards.

Good luck and Merry Christmas!

I think teachers would fully understand there's an economic crunch at present. This is new to me, to get gifts for school teachers and staff. I've never heard of it before.

Why not just write a heart felt letter saying how much you appreciate all they do for your kids? They get paid. But letters of encouragement and thanks are probably not an every day occurance.

Bake some cookies for them and split them up between them. But I don't think you're obligated to go getting gifts for them all.

HI M.
I think they also know times are hard. I think a big plate of cookies is great. Toss in a tea, coffee, and coco if you feel you have to. A nice basket from the resale store would work. People like the hand made touch. It's the thought that counts, not how much.
Happy Holidays, A. Hajec

I make scarves for my children's female teachers and will bake cookies for the male teacher (my son is in preschool and has 6 teachers, my daughter is in grade school so only has one) my boyfriend didn't think a make teacher would want a scarf. As for the gift cards $5 is fine, you have to assume you aren't going to be the only parent giving them so they will be able to combine the cards when they go to spend them and the teachers realize times are hard and how many of them there are.
