TB Tests Still Done?

So I'm registering my son for a YMCA camp online and they have a link to his health history page to update. In the space where the vaccinations are listed is a space for a date for a TB test. All the other vacc dates were filled in (from our form from last year), but I can't see anywhere on my son's latest vaccination record printout a date for a TB test, and I really don't ever remember him getting one, though with my memory that's not saying much.

Do you mamas know if TB tests are still given? When I searched for info online it didn't look like it is something that is still routinely given. I couldn't exit out of the form without putting a date on it, so I did a 00/00/00 date until I could call the doctor office on Monday.

Edit to add: My son is 10 years old. I understand adults needing tests for various job scenarios, but I'm specifically wondering about kids. I remember getting the skin test when I was a kid, but I don't remember my kids getting them. Just surprised me that it was a space on the form.

One more edit: This is not for a sleep away camp - just a half-day sports camp. Could be they use the same health form for all camps which is why it's on there.

What can I do next?

Many years ago it was discovered that the incidence of TB was rising. Police officers and inmates had to have a TB test. Officers only once. TB was frequently found among prisoners. When they had symptoms or when the test was positive the inmates had to wear a mask.

When my father was a young man he worked in his father's dairy farm. They had to be tested. Even tho he had no obvious symptoms he tested positive and had to spend weeks in a sanitarium which is a hospital for only TB patients. We no longer have sanitariums because TB is now under control, in part, due to mandatory testing.

I don't think my kids have ever had TB tests either (20 and 17) though I remember having it growing up. When I was looking at a dorm for my son I noticed that this particular college required a TB test to live on campus. I was actually wondering where we would get that so I'm glad you asked!

Yeah they are still done.
I'm not sure when for kids but if you are looking for employment at a school you have to be screened for TB.

Dont know where you were researching, but TB tests are regularlly done. As a nurse I get one every year. My risk of exposure is high, especially working in an inner city hospital. The camp ,ay want ti due to close quarters.

I had one last year. Our school district requires it to be a volunteer.
my kids never had one though. You would remember because you have to go back in a few days so the nurse can look at your arm to see if you tested positive.

I had a TB test done because I'm a teacher and it was a district requirement. The test I had was a two part one like JC described- I had the "prick" done, then I had to come back a week later for the nurse to check for any type of reaction.

The clinics at CVS and Walgreens in my area did not do them- I had to arrange it at a doctor's office.

Yes, my daughter who volunteers at a hospital is required to have a yearly TB test. 2 of them actually, 2 weeks apart.

TB tests are required for my kids to attend elementary school. I haven't ever had to prove one for a camp, but it doesn't surprise me with a big organization like YMCA.

Call your County Health Department, as they provide testing, when I had one done at the health department in Kansas, it was $25, and had to be read within 72 hours, not a minute longer. Some places do a questionnaire as some time ago there was a shortage on the tuberculin serum, so if not at high risk of exposure, it may not be required.
Employment in healthcare or high risk areas populations they are required. At our Hospital all employees must be tested and the test must be read within 72 hours to be valid.

The Y in Canada certainly doesn't require a TB test. My kids go to Y sleepaway camp every summer and have never had one. I'm pretty sure I've never had one either.

I honestly don't remember what the requirements were for my kids but I know that volunteering or working in our schools requires a clean TB test, and it needs to be done every two years.

My son is 8 and has never been required to have a TB test. He's gone to school in Oklahoma and Texas, has done sports through the city, and at the YMCA. I never had to have one as a child either....just when I started working at a hospital.

In our California school district all kids entering school need a TB test. If it's something unusual in NJ I would call them and ask if it's really needed.

I would verify that it's required for sports camp or if they are pulling that from and adult form. My mother needed a TB test for working with children.

Only certain jobs ever required a TB test such as child care and nurses. So I imagine that's a non-question for a child his age.

In Southern California there have been recent cases of TB. Health workers in a local hospital were exposed and one became identified as having an active case, exposing others. With the influx of immigrants it's hard to say what illnesses might be carried into your area.
