Remember, clothes are only tax free for up to $100, so if your spending more than that, split up the transaction. Just wanted to let you know. To make this a question, did you all know that?

So What Happened?

Hmm, Jo, I will look into it more. I thought the news said for the whole purchase, but I could have gotten it backwards.

yeah! This is the first year I have ever heard of it. We are hitting the mall tomorrow! We were already planning on getting the supplies at the dollar store (I think they would have the basics like crayons and stuff), but if not then target it is! I hope it's not too crazy. I didn't even think about crowds.

Is this Nationwide or each state? Just asking, because I remember hearing about it last year and haven't heard anything on the news this year. Then again, I tend to get the news on the radio while I'm driving, and we haven't been going anywhere lately so I'm probably out of the loop on a lot of things :-)

Tax free weeknd is a crock. I'm in TX, the tax is 8.25%. On ad free weekend, you spend all that $$ to save 8.25%??

Things are not marked down. Merchandisers play the game where you think you're getting great savings.

You are better off to shop a decent sale.

You cant pay me enough to go out on tax free weekend. I steer clear from that just like the day after Thanksgiving and Dec 26.

I was told it was per item. I know I bought clothes totaling more than 100 and it was all tax free.

My son's pretty set for school clothes.
I'm going over his school supply list to see what we already have and what else we need.
Since I'm off work tomorrow (and it starts on Fri in Va), I'll hit the store first thing in the morning when it opens and get it over with.
It varies by state.
For Virginia:

August 5-7, 2011: School Supplies and Clothing.

"During this three-day period, purchases of certain school supplies, clothing and footwear will be exempt from the Virginia sales tax. Each eligible school supply item must be priced at $20 or less, and each eligible article of clothing and footwear must be priced at $100 or less."

I didn't know that, but at this time of year I always feel bad for everyone because in MN, food and clothes are tax free always.

I think it depends on the state. In NM I think the item its self cannot be more than $100, unless it is an electronic such as a lap top.
