Seems like everywhere you turn magazines and TV are touting that something is "sexy." What's the best way to describe to my almost 7-year-old girl what the heck that is?

What can I do next?

When my daughter was 5, she went through a phase where she was "sexy". No idea where she picked it up (probably at school), but I just told her that it was a grown up word and not to use it. This was acceptable to her and she dropped it. She is now 9 and I haven't heard it since.

"It is what grownups call a very beautiful appealing woman or man. Only grownups can be sexy," or something like that. My son, he is three, he sings "who's that lady, sexy lady" son every time the song comes on tv in those swiffer commercials.

I would be inclined to tell my 7 year old that the term "sexy" is used by people not acquainted with education or a thesaurus so they can't think of a better word to describe something. I would then encourage her to use a thesaurus.

Just tell her it's something for grown ups -that being "sexy" means that a woman or man looks really great to other women or men. She'll understand the deeper meaning and subjective definitions of "sexy" when she's older.

My girls have started putting cloths on and asking me if they look sexy! It makes me sick! I try not to get upset cause I dont want them to grow up thinking being or feeling sexy is wrong cause it isnt! But my girls are 5 and 6! I tell them sexy is what a woman is and they are little girls and need to look cute or pretty.

You know how kids will overhear something and then mispronounce it later. My four year old son told me the other day that I was "flexy." Even though I thought his mispronounciation was cute, I didn't think that it was cute that he was intending to say sexy. I tell both of my boys that it is not appropriate for children to say "hot" as in "hot chick" or "sexy." I know they are not viewing girls in this way, they are just repeating what they hear others say.

They have a friend (6) whose father encourages him to say things like "hot chicks," "babes," and the likes. I do not agree with it and I tell my sons that even though thier friend may say these things, they are not allowed to. I have even said this in front of the father thinking that he may get a hint.

It angers me that the media sensationalizes sex as well. How can toilet paper and sub sandwiches be sexy? I have written a few letters to companies that use sex to market thier products. I will not buy thier products as well.

Yeah--can we get a loud shout-out to the mass media for this? :-(
I tell my 7 yo it mean the person finds it/a person/product "attractive."

Sexy describes a pleasant feature related to the specific sex of the individual who is considered sexy (man or woman). Infact parts of the body or a particular mannerism (the way a person moves for example) can be considered sexy because they show how feminine or how masculine that person is. Sexy also means "sexually appealing" describing a person very much liked by the opposite sex for those features I mentioned above. It has to do with sex = gender. If the appealing feature is not related to the gender then you fall into other, more general, categories that describe the person but not in relation to their sex (nice, pleasant, lovely ect..). Hope this helps.

Oh thank GOD!!! I thought it was just my kid. Our 5 y/o told my husband the other day "Dad i love girls, they're so sexy!" When asked what sexy meant, our son replied "really pretty".
This was just the beginning of the new constant question, what does sexy mean? I could not figure out for the life of me where he was hearing this stuff, if he watches TV its mostly PBS kids. We watch some of our stuff with the boys in the house, but very careful about it. Well I saw a commercial for some type of bathroom product (soap, tissue, something like that) and it was a cute little puppy talking about how this product mad him feel sexy, while floating in a tub of purple flowers. The kid was mesmerized! he loves puppies! Geesh!
So, he was badgering me about this word and finally he accepted the explanation that sexy was a grown-up word that he was too young to understand or use. For now. I am reading away here to get some tips to have in my pocket for when it comes up again.

I would explain that 'sexy' is a grown up term, first of all and it should not and does not apply to them. I would use it in the context of mommies and daddies- 'It is a special way that a mommy and daddy feel about each other and look at each other, but it is only for grown people'

Kids can understand that some things are for grown-ups only- you could say something like " Just like only grown ups can drive a car, go to a certain movie, wear makeup, etc. sexy is like that- something that you don't need to worry about until you are all grown up."

If she asks when that will be... lol, tell her when she is in college?? Or maybe never ;)
