Swine Flu Vaccine

I am pregnant and have been told by various adult doctors, that I should get the swine flu vaccine and that they will be available Sept. 1. I am all for it, and think that my 3 year old and 1 year old should get it too, especially because my oldest attends preschool and we are going to have a newborn in the house in a couple months. Well, I called my pediatrician to see when they could come in and get it, and the nurse there said that swine flu wasn't ready and wouldn't be ready until spring. Does anyone know if kids can get it and where? Or is the vaccine only ready for adults?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Well, thank you for all of your responses. I am not sure I am ever going to post a question on here again though. I do think there are nice ways of stating your opinion and really mean ways. Basically being blasted for even considering the vaccine, when none of you know that my youngest had major health concerns last year from getting RSV and the regular flu. So yes, to me a vaccine that has been tested might be worth the risk if it could save my child's life. Oh, and I never go into anything "blindly" with no research when it comes to me and my children. In fact, my children get all of there vaccines separated and we do not even do the MMR. But, thank you to all those who were nice and thank you Courtnee- in my research I had not seen that there was thimeresol in the vaccine, which now gives me much more to think about. I do appreciate the answers, I at least got my question answered, now I just have to get over the feeling of being a terrible mother because I believe in vaccines.

Wow - you are brave. I thought this was all still in the testing phase. I would not be willing to be a guinea pig for something so new. These things come out and in a few years you find out all this damage & side effects they cause. I also am pregnant and have a 2 1/2 year old and would not let them near me or my daughter with that needle until it has been truly tested and proven to be safe. Until that time, the drugs they treat you with if you do happen to come down with the flu work well and I'd rather go with that on an IF basis.

I would encourage you to do a little research before subjecting you, your children and especially your unborn child to this untested vaccine that has been hurriedly thrown together. The toxic cocktail being used for this vaccine is quite shocking. Not only does it contain the standard toxins like mercury, aluminum and formaldehyde but is contains squalene which is noted to have caused the Gulf War Syndrome.

Healthy individuals are not at risk of fatal outcomes from the regular flu or the swine flu. They do suggest such vaccines for newborns (Lord knows why they would inject such things into tiny babies) but that is because they are often exposed in daycares. If you are a SAHM you have no need to risk an untested vaccine.

I again just encourage you to do some research before you blindly accept a vaccine that has no track record and is full of toxins.

Hi and congrats on your pregnancy. I too agree with Tiffaney. Why would you want to suppress yours or your children's immune system with this toxic cocktail. I understand the medical profession has its reasons for suggesting this: $$$ I strongly suggest that you do some research and thorough research. There are some serious risks to these vaccines and I'm talking LONG term damage, things you would never realize came from the vaccines. Ultimately the choice is YOURS but here are some sites where you can make an informed decision. If you'd like more information, I'll gladly get it for you.

Here is a list of some vaccine ingredients:
MSG, antifreeze, formaldhyde, aluminum, glycerin, lead, cadmium, sulfates (proven to cause cancer), yeast proteins, antibiotics, acetone, neomycin, streptomycin, mercury, monkey kidney, dog kidney, chick embryo, chicken egg, duck egg, calf serum, aborted fetal tissue, pig blood, horse blood, sheep blood, rabbit brain, guinea pig, cow heart, animal viruses, etc!

I agree with Tiffany 100%. Please do some research before accepting the recommendation.
This is an untested vaccine and you and your children will be the guinea pigs.

Hi M.,

Congrats on your pregnancy! I too am pregnant and have a few friends who are currently pregnant. We have discussed this very issue and are all currently undecided and confused.

My initial reaction was, "there was no way in heck I was going to get that vaccination, it is way to new". However, I now have a slightly different view. One of my best friends cousin recently died from the Swin Flu and her story is very heart breaking. Young pregnant mother who contracted the swine flu. They had to delivere her baby at only 6 months, she was in a drug induced coma and just recently died due to flu complications - you can read further details on her story here:
www.komonews.com/news/local/53051347.html

I am eagerly awaiting test results so that I can further educate myself - remembering that every thing we read isn't always the complete truth.

Living in South Florida I have choosen to vaccinate my daughter - mearly because of how many tourists and short term residents are here in Florida - you just don't know who or what you may run into. I believe that the US doesn't suffer from many of the life threating diseases as we did in the past and as other countries do - becuase we vaccinate.

Everything we do for ourselfs and our children is a personal choice and I do not condemn anyone for their choices. Many of my close friends have not vaccinated their children and we are still friends and still have play dates. Although, I pray that years from now disease we have been free from due to vaccinations don't sneek back up on us.

Wishing you the best!

T.

**Addition**
There are ALWAYS thimerisol free flu vaccines. However, the amount of thimerisol is so small, I garuntee you injest more when you eat certain types of fish! Also, there is not a single newborn baby in the WORLD that gets the flu vaccine, that is wrong. Caregivers that will be around the baby get the vaccine. People can list the ingrediants and call them evil all they want, they save lives. Even though I strongly feel this way and will be getting my whole family the regular flu vaccine, I too would not rush into getting the swine flu one. New vaccines need to be tested and I do perfer not to be one of the first to get it, especially if I was pregnant. If your preschool starts getting hit, keeping her out will be far more effective than the vaccine. Good luck with the decision! It always seems like you feel your darned if you do, darned if you don't doesn't it?

I'm surprised they gave you a date like that. My doctor said they hope to have it in time but might not. I wouldn't think there would be any way to schedule for this already. You just need to wait until it is actually started being given. You should have no problems because your whole family will be in the high risk catagory. It is going to be a really bad flu season, but I'm not sure I want to be one of the first to get the vaccine. I usually like to give it a few weeks so I can hear if there are any horrible reactions to it. Plan on getting the regular vaccine ASAP and play the rest by ear. My son got a mild case two weeks ago. Bad fever and some vomitting, but he recovered very quickly. He got put on tamiflu very quickly and I recommend that if you should come down with symptoms. Keep in mind more people still die of the regular flu every year.

I googled it and found a webpage from WebMD (so I don't give an opinion to it or try to recall from the news channels, I have a bad memory)

Here is the site: http://www.webmd.com/cold-and-flu/news/20090720/swine-flu...

Here are the talking points from the article (please note that these are just notes from the article and not the full article, which is 4 pages long):

Will there be a vaccine? Perhaps not that soon. And the clock is ticking away the short amount of time before federal officials, including President Barack Obama, have to make hard choices about whether -- and how fast -- to get swine flu shots to everyone who wants one. Or at least to those who most need one.

If the government makes the decision to go ahead with a full-scale vaccination program, it would be the largest, fastest vaccination program in world history.

Warning: Flu viruses -- and flu vaccine production -- are notoriously unpredictable. Many things can change, even by the earliest points of this timeline.

The CDC will recommend people get their flu shots or flu sniffs earlier than usual this year, to make way for possible pandemic flu vaccination.

Seasonal vaccine doesn't protect against the new swine flu bug. But there's a long history of safety and efficacy for flu vaccines made of H1N1 antigens, notes flu expert John Treanor, MD, chief of infectious diseases at the University of Rochester, New York.

The most important question about a pandemic flu vaccine is whether it will be safe. Unfortunately, like nearly everything about flu bugs, safety can't be guaranteed 100%

By mid-September, results from clinical studies will show the best dose for pandemic swine flu vaccine, how many doses are needed for which populations, and whether the vaccine appears safe in different populations.

If the decision was made in August to start packaging vaccine doses, vaccine will become available around Sept. 15. Early results from clinical trials will guide the decision whether to start vaccinating people. But that decision will have to be made before officials have all the information they'd like to have.

Hope this helps :) Congrats on Baby #3!

BTW Healthy people have died from the swine flu!! People use keys words like "toxic cocktail" to make it sound like you are poisining your family. Doctors give vaccines for people's health - NOT for $$$... If they were in it for the money, then they would have chose a different field like plastic surgery. How much money do they really make off of one shot??

The swine flu vaccine is not currently available and will not be available by Sept 1, as far as anyone knows yet. The regular flu vaccine will be available Sept 1 and, according to experts, may offer a certain degree of protection against swine flu (though not fully), so maybe that is what your doctor is talking about? You and your children should be able to get the regular flu vaccine any time after Sept 1. My ped's office starts giving them on Sept 15 (they use flu-mist for age 2 and up, so no shots), and I get the shot at work in early October.

Just wanted to clarify that vaccines do not suppress your immune system, they do the opposite. They cause your body to build antibodies toward the virus, thus strengthening your immune system.

No one knows the exact date that the vaccine will be available, but the hope is that it will be out around the time that the yearly flu vaccine becomes available (September/October). The vaccine is currently in clinical trials. Once out, the vaccine will be available to kids and adults (there may be a prioritization list which you will definitley be on!). It is also a 2 part vaccine (23 days apart). Also, since you are pregnant- make sure you get the regular flu vaccine, too!

**I just read your other responses, and understand why you would not ever want to post another question!! I posted one a while back about having to stop breastfeeding, and I got attacked (my breasts dried up but some moms made me feel like I was the devil b.c of it)!! Please know that not ALL moms on here are judgemental. Just go with your heart, and do what you think is right for your family! I know my family will be vaccinated!
