Swimming Classes for a 6 Month Old

We did swim class at the Warren Community Center. The next session begins at the end of March. Unfortunately for me, the Parent-Toddler class has already filled but you can look into the Parent-Infant class.

Sterling Hts parks and rec offers swim classes... currently they are filled til the next enrollment... you can go on-line to get the info. It depends on where you live. Lots of communities will offer lessons at the local public H.S..

The Livonia Rec Center has a great Aqua-infants swim class. They have to be 6 months old to attend. We did this with my son when he was 10 months old, and I'll be doing it with my daughter when she's 6 months this June. Go to www.ci.livonia.mi.us for online registration.

I took my son when he was about that age to the Goldfish Swim School. I think it was in Berkley but I may be wrong. It was really great, but a bit pricey. My grandma footed the bill otherwise we wouldn't have been able to afford it.

It was a really great time for all of us and I highly recommend them. They have a website so if you google them I'm sure you'll find them!

The Troy Community Center has a wonderful Swim Program.

When my daughter was a little over six months we went to the costick center. The teacher is wonderful and the classes are not too expensive.

I wanted to get my 6-month old into a pool too, but my pediatrician suggested I hold off until he's about two years old. He said babies are prone to getting more ear infections, especially if his inner ears are wet all the time, and it could mess with the development of his ability to maintain equilibrium, develop hearing problems, speech problems, etc. If you're just itching to get him into the water, I suggest you just take him to the pool occasionally and let him splash around in the shallow water while wearing some floaties. :)

I inquired when my boys were small and i found the classes that the South Lake School District had to offer to be really good. Give them a call. They have many levels of swim classes and I have even heard from other moms that they were pleased. Most of them are held at the high school on 9 mile and some are even at other local high schools. If not there, you could always try the YMCA on Jefferson. They may have some to offer. Good luck and enjoy !!

I take my 9mos. old to Goldfish in Birmingham. The whole place is geared toward children and my son loves it. Infact it seems that all the kids love it. I use to teach preschoolers to swim back in the early eighties and boy have things changed for the better. Check out the website www.goldfishswimschool.com

The YMCA in Auburn Hills has a swim lesson for 6 mos. - 2. Next classes begin week of 4/20. I think the class is avail. one week night and Sat. a.m.

I highly recommend the classes at West Bloomfield High School through their community ed.

The teacher, Elena Nanoshi, is an Olympian that medalled. She has taught my daughter (4 months at the time) to go under water. She is very patient and encourages participation.

My older children are on the swim team that she coaches as well.
