My son is 14 months and I'm thinking of enrolling him in swimming lessons. Anyone had experience with a teacher or place? Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the ideas! We decided to go with Troy Comm. Center for now.. it's reasonable and has the hours/days that I was looking for, but perhaps in the future we'll go to Goldfish.. : )

My son is 14 months old also and has been enrolled at goldfish swim school for 3 months now. I absolutely love the facility and the teachers and the owner is wonderful. We live in st. clair shores and drive out there once a week because it is worth it!!

My kids both took lessons at Lifetime fitness. I really liked their program. It was fun for the kids and they were learning. I highly recommend it. I don't think you have to belong to the gym to take the classes. I would also assume the ymca has a program too.

My son took lessons at Lifetime Fitness in Rochester Hills. I'm probably going to be enrolling my daughter this summer as well. The water is warm, it is a zero entry pool and the kids have a good time. You do not have to be a member and there is a family locker room.

Lifetime Fitness (Rochester Rd and Avon) has good intructors and lessons. For that age it is a mom and tot program. They have a 0 entry pool, so it is very easy to be in the pool with your little one without it being deep quickly. I've heard good things about the Rochester YMCA also.

My son and his girlfriend teach swim lessons at Spencer Park on John R just north of M-59. I don't know what they cost, but I know the instructors are top notch! :-)

Hi Loziermusic, There is a YMCA located in Auburn Hills at Walton & Squirrel just past Oakland University. If you go west on Walton, it us just a little past Squirrel on the left, near a McDonald's. I don't know if they offer swimming lessons or not but you could inquire. I think they have a pool. Walton is under construction right now and will be for quite a while. However, if you go west on Walton, when you come to Squirrel, make a right turn onto Squirrel and then use the turnaround to go back to Walton. Make a right at Walton and then look for the YMCA on the left. All the businesses are open during the construction. Hope you find a good place for the lessons.

I don't know exactly where you are, but I started my son at about the same age (maybe a little later..2-ish) at Beverly Hills Club with Eddie (they also have a "mommy and me" class for the little ones like yours). He totally cried every time Eddie made him go under water for the first few weeks. He is 9 now and has more than 15 medals hanging on his bedpost...more importantly, he LOVES swimming and he loves the competition. It's a wonderful (and relatively safe) sport to get them into. Just a thought.

We belong to the YMCA right now, and they teach swimming lessons there. You don't need to be a member to take lessons, but they do cost a little more if you are not a member. I think the cost is around $90. Before we joined the Y, I took my then 14 month daugher to swimming lessons at the Troy Community Center. They have a beautiful facility and the lesson cost is much more affordable at $45. I was/am please with both places.

Hi there,

My daughter has been in Simply Music for about a year and a half. We have been so impressed with the results. Back to your question though. Goldfish Swim School in Birmingham provides quality lessons. I have friends I know that come from the Rochester area, as they are so impressed with it. Check out their website at Goldfish Swim School.com. Email me back if you have any specific questions or concerns.

Goldfish Swimming has a good reputation for small class sizes and value for the $. my son gets his lessons as part of his summer camp so i don't have a direct experience with them but alot of the parents i encounter speak very highly of it. i think they are in birmingham? if you yellow page them in or around birmingham i am sure you can get a hit. have fun! :-) S.

I've registered my 4 year old with Rochester community schools. The teachers are high school swimmers. It was cheap, only $67 for 8 weeks. We were able to stay and watch him for the 55 minutes. He had a blast! We're going to sign him up again in April.
